At the table
Voice
A dry, chest-resonant rasp with a faint grit, like gravel dragged through a wooden chute. His consonants are crisp from years of making himself heard over river traffic; when amused, his breath catches in a short, rough puff rather than a laugh.
His words are clipped but not hurried, shaped by years of talking over dock machinery and bargaining in crowded rooms. He favors concrete nouns and careful pauses, as if every sentence were a receipt he might need later. His accent carries the flattened vowels of the river district, with Draconic consonants clicking at the ends of certain words.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Al is courteous to strangers who show restraint and useful to those who demonstrate competence. He tests visitors with small questions before offering help, and prefers bargains with clear limits. If someone threatens Laios, he stops negotiating and moves to control the exits.
Goal
Find the surviving witness to the dockside fire, learn who ordered it, and settle the matter without letting Laios's crew become a tool of revenge.
Motivation
Keep his people secure without becoming the kind of quiet tyrant he once feared.
Appearance
Al has charcoal-gray scales with a faint, wet-stone sheen, paling to slate along his jaw and knuckles. Fine ridges run from his brow to the base of his horns, which sweep back close to his skull rather than flaring theatrically. He moves with an economical, slightly lopsided glide, always letting his left foot arrive first; while waiting, he rests his weight against the nearest solid surface as though the room itself were an accomplice. His unexpected detail is a tiny, meticulously maintained brass wind-up bird pinned inside his lapel, a sentimental toy he repairs with the same care he gives a weapon. He leaves the impression of a well-dressed man who has already noticed every exit.
Clothing
A dark, close-fitted wool coat with a high collar, matte buttons, and no flashy embroidery; a soft waistcoat, polished but scuffed boots, narrow leather gloves, and a discreet signet ring. His coat is cut to conceal a dagger without bulging.
Body language
He stands with one shoulder near a wall and his weight settled over his left foot. His hands are usually visible, relaxed, and empty, but his gaze tracks anyone who moves toward Laios. When considering a lie, he rubs one thumb over the edge of his signet ring. He rarely crowds people; he makes them cross the space to him.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Al prefers to avoid a fair fight. He positions himself near cover, uses Cunning Action to hide or disengage, and relies on an ally being near his target to land Sneak Attack. He opens with a social feint or a breath weapon against clustered foes, then targets dangerous spellcasters or anyone threatening Laios. He uses Uncanny Dodge to blunt a hit and retreats if the fight turns against his people.

Background
Alierd, called al by everyone who matters to him, grew up in the flood-stained alleys of a river city, where his aunt taught him to read contracts and his cousin Laios taught him which doors opened for a smile. As teenagers, they ran messages for the neighborhood's protection crews. During a dockside fire, al went back into a collapsing counting house to pull Laios out, but could save only the man and not the records that proved who had started the blaze. That failure changed his priorities: he stopped believing that courage alone could protect anyone and began collecting leverage, favors, and carefully kept information. Now he is Laios's public right-hand man and, in practice, the quiet decision-maker behind their operations. Laios still believes he is in charge. Al keeps the crew fed and the worst violence contained, while privately searching for the fire's surviving witness. The witness has recently resurfaced, and an old rival is asking questions.

- Faction
