Voice

A dry, clear voice with a small catch on certain consonants, as if his throat remembers the crack of the observatory ward. Before he speaks, he often takes a measured nose-breath that sounds faintly like paper drawn across stone. The sound is more pronounced after long study or when his pact is active.

He speaks with the carefully articulated pacing of an advanced student trained to defend every claim. His consonants have a slight dry catch, a lasting effect of the observatory ward's blast; when hurried, the words run together and the catch becomes more noticeable. He tends to inhale through his nose before answering questions he considers dangerous.

Speech patterns

Frames a difficult question as a small correction: "I think the ward is answering the wrong part of the room."
Uses precise academic terms when nervous, then translates them into plain language if he sees a listener getting lost.
When he is genuinely amused, he begins a sentence, stops, and gives a short, surprised laugh before finishing it.
Refers to his father by name only when making a serious disagreement.

How to play them

Begin with a useful fact or a practical offer rather than a grand introduction. He responds well to honest questions about magic and poorly to attempts to flatter his family. If trust is established, ask about the observatory accident or the castle ward; he will admit that he is frightened, but only after confirming the listener will not report him to Arannis.

Goal

Discover what lies beneath the castle ward and learn whether his pact can be understood without surrendering his choices.

Motivation

He wants to make knowledge serve people rather than family prestige, while proving that the pact need not define or own him.

Appearance

Hananiah Vaelith looks almost sculpted from a living geode: sapphire-blue crystalline scales lie in overlapping patches along his temples, collarbones, forearms, and knuckles, each with a frosted edge that catches the perpetual daylight. A pale cyan aura hangs close to him like cold breath, brightening when he is intent. He moves with careful, economical steps, but his head turns in quick, birdlike increments when he hears a spell vibrate. His hands are unexpectedly ink-stained and rough from copying old formulae and filing scale fragments for study; tiny blue facets glint in the creases of his knuckles. People tend to remember the faint, dry chime his sleeves make when he folds his arms.

Clothing

A charcoal academy coat with a high collar, cut to leave his scaled throat and wrists uncovered, over a pale grey shirt and fitted dark trousers. He wears a narrow sash in his subhouse colors, but keeps his cuffs smudged with chalk and ink. A small lens hangs from a cord at his belt.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders carefully squared in formal company, though one hand often rubs the ridged scales at his wrist. When thinking, he tilts his head as if trying to catch a sound behind the speaker. His cyan aura gathers tightly around his forearms when he is suppressing anger or fear.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Hananiah is genuinely curious and generous with anyone who approaches a problem in good faith, yet he can become maddeningly secretive when a question touches his pact. In a classroom he is composed and exacting; among friends he is dryly funny and more impulsive than he wants his father to know. Under pressure he becomes brisk and commanding, then later worries that he sounded cruel. He wants independence, but a part of him still waits for Arannis to say he has done well.

Alignment
Principled, but increasingly willing to break rules he considers unjust

Quirks

Taps a fingernail against glassware to hear whether it rings true before drinking from it.
Arranges chalk by length, then deliberately turns one piece sideways when he is trying to look relaxed.
Keeps scraps of failed spell diagrams and labels them with the weather, even indoors.
When startled, he says "There" before he has worked out what he means.

Habits

In lectures, he waits until the last moment to ask the question everyone else has avoided, then writes down the answer as if it were a confession.
When someone is frightened, he becomes brisk and practical, offering exact instructions rather than comfort.
When praised by his father, he smiles too quickly and immediately changes the subject.
He tests unfamiliar magical objects by listening for their resonance before touching them.

That Arannis will value the family name more than his son's safety.
Being responsible for another friend's injury because he delayed acting to understand the danger.

A trustworthy companion who will challenge him without treating him as a family emblem.
A chance to investigate the castle ward before his father or the Academy closes the matter.
Rest and food during his habit of studying through the night.

Combat

HP 72 · 30 feet per round

Hananiah opens at range with Sapphire Lance, then uses Rimeburst to disrupt clustered enemies or Glassbind to stop a dangerous pursuer. He prefers cover and controlled retreats, and uses his ward to protect himself or an ally at a decisive moment. If an enemy is helpless, he tries to make them surrender rather than strike again.

SensesOrdinary vision and hearing; can sense active magic within 30 feet by listening for its vibration, a custom ability that reveals presence and direction only
Custom Generic Fantasy rules. Hananiah uses d20 tests. Roll d20 plus the listed relevant trait against a difficulty set by the GM; 10 is routine under pressure, 15 is hard, and 20 is severe. His level is a narrative power rank, not a class progression claim.
Pale Cyan Ward. Once per scene, Hananiah can reduce damage from one attack by 6, as crystalline scales flare with cold light.
Sapphire Resonance. Hananiah can sense active magic within 30 feet if he pauses to listen for its vibration. This reveals presence and direction, not identity or purpose.
Custom pact magic. His listed spell-like actions are bespoke effects, not spells from a published rules list. He can use each one twice per scene; the GM may require a Will test to sustain an effect under disruption.

Actions

Sapphire Lance. Custom attack: to hit at close range; on a hit, deal force damage. A target struck must succeed on a difficulty 15 Might test or be pushed 10 feet.
Rimeburst. Custom pact effect: Choose a point within 60 feet. A pale cyan bolt bursts in a 10-foot radius; creatures there make a difficulty 15 Agility test, taking cold damage on a failure or half on a success. Usable twice per scene.
Glassbind. Custom pact effect: One creature Hananiah can see within 40 feet makes a difficulty 16 Will test. On a failure, it is bound by translucent crystal threads and cannot move more than 5 feet until the end of its next turn. Usable twice per scene.
Staff Check. Custom close attack: to hit; on a hit, deal bludgeoning damage. He uses the capped end of his staff to make space rather than pursue a fleeing foe.

Reactions

Pale Cyan Ward. Once per scene, when an attack would hit Hananiah or an ally within 10 feet, he flares his pale cyan ward. Reduce the damage by 6; the protected creature is briefly rimed with frost.
Resonant Sidestep. When a creature moves within 5 feet of him, Hananiah may step up to 5 feet without provoking a retaliatory strike in this custom ruleset, then make a difficulty 13 Will test. On a success, his aura warns him of that creature's next hostile motion, granting him an advantage on his next defense against it.

Services they sell

Can explain Academy ward theory and help identify common magical disturbances.
Can lend access to public study rooms at the Solar Academy when his schedule permits.
Can use his custom pact magic to restrain a pursuer or protect a group in danger.

Rewards they can give

A clear rubbing of a ward inscription from the castle's sealed observatory.
An introduction to an advanced Academy researcher, if Hananiah believes the party will protect the information.
A temporary pale cyan ward charm, a custom single-use item that reduces one instance of damage by 6.

Background

Hananiah was raised in Vareth-Om Castle in Aelithar, the son of Arannis Vaelith of House Gyrvyrrel, Subhouse Icereth. His father expected a polished heir who could turn family influence into a place at the heart of the Solar Academy of Aelithar. Hananiah did earn admission to advanced classes, but his fascination was never with prestige. He wanted to understand the strange pulse beneath his scales, a resonance that answered certain old wards before he knew their names. At fourteen, during a supervised examination of a sealed observatory chamber, the ward lattice failed. A falling crystal arch trapped three students. Hananiah heard the fracture a moment before it happened and instinctively called on the presence bound to his pact. The resulting burst of cyan light held the stones aloft long enough for the others to escape, but left him with a permanent aura and a voice that catches faintly on certain consonants. One rescued student, the practical-minded Bruk, remains his closest friend and the only person who openly challenges his habit of turning every fear into research. Now Hananiah attends advanced classes while living with Arannis, who wants him to keep the pact quiet and accept a safe, respectable future. Hananiah is secretly investigating an old ward beneath the castle whose resonance matches the voice that answered him. His instructor, Professor Szel, suspects he is missing lessons to pursue the mystery. The bond is useful, but it has begun to answer questions Hananiah has not asked aloud.

Role in the story

A guarded young heir and pact-bound scholar whose investigation can expose a threat beneath Vareth-Om Castle. He can be an ally, a source of Academy access, or the person whose concealed experiment brings the party into conflict with his father.
