Cevran
Cevran
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, grainy edge from years of river wind and calling across crowded docks. It carries clearly without booming, with a quick catch on certain consonants when he is tired. When he lies, his timing becomes too neat, as though each sentence has been folded before he speaks it.
He speaks in clipped, practical phrases shaped by years of giving directions over ferry noise. He often begins with a detail about the room, then arrives at the point; stress makes his sentences shorter and more exact rather than louder.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Cevran begins with practical cooperation and asks what the other person needs before offering his own story. He will reveal his courier background but withhold the packet's location until he has evidence that the group will protect the people named in it. Kindness earns trust slowly; threats make him economical and evasive.
Goal
Escape captivity, secure the hidden proof of Magistrate Drost's grain theft, and get word to Tavi before the magistrate's men find him.
Motivation
He wants the truth to reach the people harmed by it, but he is driven equally by guilt over the flood and by a stubborn need to keep his apprentice out of danger.
Appearance
Cevran has a long, compact frame and a quick, uneven gait: his left foot lands softly while his right heel clicks down as if testing every floorboard. His hands are broad at the knuckles and oddly supple, with flattened fingertips from years of lifting wax seals without breaking them. He holds still with such deliberate precision that people often mistake him for calm, until his eyes begin counting exits. His most unexpected detail is a tiny, immaculate paper star tucked behind one ear, folded from a scrap of a prisoner's old letter.
Clothing
A travel-worn charcoal coat with a deep inner seam for folded papers, a rust-colored scarf, patched trousers, and soft boots with mismatched laces. His captors have taken his belt, weapons, and outer coat, leaving him in a wrinkled linen shirt and one boot.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders slightly forward, as if walking into wind, and shifts his weight onto the balls of his feet. His right heel makes a faint click when he turns. When he is lying, he becomes unnaturally still and stops using his hands.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 16 · 30 ft.Cevran avoids a fair fight. He uses Cunning Action to break line of sight, reach cover, or disengage, then looks for a chance to enable Sneak Attack alongside an ally. While captive and unarmed, he prioritizes freeing himself and creating an opening for others rather than trading blows. He will surrender or bargain if that buys time to keep the packet's location secret.

Background
Cevran grew up carrying sealed notes between the ferry landings of Tallowbridge, where a courier learned to read hands, doors, and silences before words. He became a discreet messenger for merchants and officials, not because he loved secrets but because he knew how badly a careless message could hurt ordinary people. Years ago, a flood trapped him in a counting room with a feverish clerk and a bundle of letters. He could save only one bundle before the water rose. He chose letters proving that a local magistrate had diverted relief grain; the clerk died before Cevran could get help. That failure changed his work: since then, he has copied dangerous documents and hidden duplicates with people who might need them. Now he is held in a cellar by men seeking the location of a particular packet. He is trying to escape before they learn what it proves. His old ferry partner, Hessa, still thinks he abandoned her after the flood, while a young apprentice, Tavi, waits for a message that Cevran has not been able to send.
Role in the story
A captive courier with time running out, Cevran can become a rescue objective, an uneasy ally, or a source of evidence that turns a local dispute into a larger political crisis.

- Faction
- Formerly an independent courier of Tallowbridge; currently no formal faction. He has occasionally carried messages for the ferry workers' mutual-aid circle, known locally as the Bent Step.
