At the table

Voice

A clear, dry voice with a little rasp from salt air and workshop dust. It carries easily across a lecture hall, shaped by years of projecting over chalk scraping and harbor noise. When excited, he accelerates and clips the ends of words; when annoyed, his consonants strike like a tool set sharply on a bench.

He speaks in clean, carefully assembled clauses, with the clipped precision of someone used to teaching from a chalkboard and calling figures over workshop noise. His port-city upbringing leaves a trace of salt-weathered consonants in his Common, while years of lectures lend his explanations a practiced, forward-driving rhythm. Excitement makes him talk faster and stack qualifications into the same sentence; irritation brings out blunt, workbench language rather than refinement.

Speech patterns

Builds an argument through numbered premises, then leaps to a conclusion as if everyone followed the intermediate steps.
Uses precise, respectful language when discussing faith, craft, and evidence.
Calls a calculation elegant only after asking whether it can survive salt, rain, and an impatient user.
Treats musical interruptions as personal assaults on concentration, though he sometimes catches himself and apologizes.

How to play them

Approach Marcus with a concrete problem, measurements, or a working object and he will become an energetic collaborator. Give him room to finish a thought, but challenge him with evidence when needed. A sincere question about Lughon or his craft earns respect. Mocking his orthodox observances or interrupting him with a performance is likely to end the conversation quickly.

Goal

Complete and publicly demonstrate the rune-card analytical engine, then place its useful calculations in the hands of sailors and craftspeople without surrendering control to a commercial monopoly.

Motivation

He wants careful mathematical craft to become a trustworthy public tool, and believes that useful work, performed with discipline and reverence, honors Lughon.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Marcus takes up space without seeming to notice it, leaning across tables as if every conversation were a diagram he could improve. He walks in brisk, measured bursts, stopping so abruptly that people behind him nearly collide with his back. His face is long and alert, framed by hair that springs into loose curls around the ears. Fine graphite smudges collect in the creases of his palms and under his nails. He smells faintly of lamp oil, salt air, and toasted card stock. Unexpectedly for a professor famous for his temper, he keeps a tiny, carefully tended pot of thyme on his laboratory windowsill and touches its leaves before beginning work.

Clothing

A dark teal professor's coat with broad, practical pockets, a leather apron when working, and a high-collared linen shirt. Brass spectacles hang on a cord; his cuffs are patched with sailcloth, and a small prayer token to Lughon is tucked under his collar.

Body language

He crowds diagrams and people alike, bending into their space with an eager forward tilt. His fingers tap out sequences on any nearby edge, and he pivots sharply from one task to the next. When he is trying to listen rather than solve, he clasps both hands behind his back to stop them from fiddling.

Distinguishing features

Stops abruptly mid-stride and turns in place with the crispness of a compass needle.
Graphite and blue ink stain the creases of his palms despite repeated scrubbing.
Keeps a small pot of thyme alive in a laboratory notorious for smoke and spilled oil.
Wears a flat brass prayer token beneath his collar, its rim polished by frequent touch.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Marcus's mind is patient with numbers and impatient with almost everything that interrupts them. He is generous with students who bring honest questions, yet prickly when someone praises him without understanding the work. At ease, he is wry and unexpectedly tender toward small living things; under pressure, he becomes brisk, loud, and determined to make the problem behave. His orthodox faith gives him a disciplined respect for craft, though his contempt for bards exposes a stubborn blind spot.

Alignment
Lawful Good

Quirks

Taps out prime numbers on table edges when waiting for someone to answer.
Turns every loose card face down before beginning a serious conversation.
Greets his thyme plant with a quiet, formal nod after returning from travel.
Keeps screws sorted by size in folded paper packets labeled with tiny, immaculate handwriting.

Habits

Tests small mechanisms while listening, then apologizes to the person whose sleeve he has accidentally used as a work surface.
When excited, narrates each step of a calculation as if the world itself is keeping notes.
When irritated, becomes more direct and physically busy, sorting cards, tightening screws, or drawing diagrams while he argues.
Before a difficult decision, performs a brief orthodox prayer to Lughon and checks the answer against practical evidence.

Traits · 4

He can spend an hour patiently explaining a difficult proof, then snap at a dropped spoon.
He values tradition in prayer and experiment alike, but eagerly adopts a new technique when it proves itself.
He is proud of his inventions and sincerely wants their benefits shared.
He distrusts showmanship, yet cannot resist staging an impressive demonstration when his work succeeds.

Flaws · 4

His irritation with bards makes him dismiss useful people before he understands what they are saying.
He mistakes a strong argument for a completed plan and can rush past the testing stage.
He is possessive of the analytical engine and reluctant to let others alter its mechanisms.
His temper flares when people interrupt a calculation, especially during a demonstration.

Fears · 3

That the engine will be used to make dangerous magical decisions faster rather than wiser.
That his early harbor mistake will be repeated at a far greater scale.
That devotion to careful craft has become an excuse to avoid trusting other people.

Wants and needs · 4

Time and safe access to test the analytical engine outside the university laboratory.
Independent review of the Dwarven schematics before the public demonstration.
A way to preserve public access to the engine's benefits while resisting Odo Vask's exclusive claim.
Occasional reminders that a person speaking lyrically may still have something useful to say.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 75 · 30 feet

Marcus prefers to keep cover between himself and danger, using Tally to harry an attacker and shield an ally. He opens with a control spell such as web, then fires his hand crossbow from a protected position. He uses Arcane Jolt to rescue a badly hurt ally or punish a creature that closes with him. He will retreat if doing so protects his research or bystanders, but he is stubborn about abandoning Tally.

Battle Ready. Marcus uses Intelligence for attack and damage rolls with his magical weapons.
Steel Defender. A brass-and-iron mechanical gull named Tally obeys Marcus's commands. It acts immediately after him, has AC 15, 35 hit points, speed 40 feet, and makes a force-empowered rend at to hit for force damage. It can use its reaction to impose disadvantage on an attack against a creature within 5 feet of it.
Extra Attack. Marcus attacks twice when he takes the Attack action.
Infusions. Enhanced Defense, Enhanced Weapon, Mind Sharpener, and Repeating Shot. His infusion limit is four.
Custom feature, Rune-Card Engine. Once per long rest, if Marcus has ten minutes and access to his portable engine, he can calculate a solution to a practical mathematical or mechanical problem. The DM determines what information or advantage the calculation provides; it cannot reveal unknowable facts or replace a spell.

Spells

Prestidigitation (cantrip, transmutation). An artificer cantrip. Marcus produces a minor sensory effect or harmless magical mark, often using it to indicate a measurement.
Message (cantrip, transmutation). An artificer cantrip. He sends a small magical message to a creature within range.
Mending (cantrip, transmutation). An artificer cantrip. He repairs a single break or tear in an object no larger than 1 foot in any dimension.
Shield (level 1, abjuration). A 1st-level artificer spell. Marcus creates a brief protective ward that grants +5 AC until the start of his next turn, including against the triggering attack.
Detect Magic (level 1, divination). A 1st-level artificer spell. Marcus magically perceives the presence of magic and can study an object's aura.
False Life (level 1, necromancy). A 1st-level artificer spell. Marcus touches a willing creature and grants it a small reserve of temporary hit points for up to eight hours.
Web (level 2, conjuration). A 2nd-level artificer spell. Marcus creates a web of sticky strands that can restrain creatures and hinder movement in an area.
Locate Object (level 2, divination). A 2nd-level artificer spell. He magically locates a known object or a familiar object of a particular kind, subject to the spell's limits.
Unseen Servant (level 2, conjuration). A 2nd-level artificer spell. Marcus creates a simple mechanical or magical helper that can perform a small task.
Aura of Vitality (level 3, evocation). A 3rd-level artificer spell. Marcus creates a protective field that can absorb damage dealt to creatures in its area.
Wall of Sand (level 3, evocation). A 3rd-level artificer spell. Marcus creates a wall of force that can divide an area or protect a position.

Actions

Repeating Hand Crossbow. Marcus makes two attacks with his infused hand crossbow, to hit, range 30/120 feet, one target. Hit: piercing damage, plus force damage from Arcane Jolt once on his turn.
Infused Wrench. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 feet, one target. Hit: magical bludgeoning damage.
Command Tally. Marcus directs Tally to move and use its force-empowered rend, or another action for which it is suited.
Arcane Jolt. Marcus channels a burst of stored magic into himself or a creature or object he can touch. A creature regains hit points, or the target takes force damage. He can use this feature three times per long rest.

Reactions

Steel Defender, Deflect Attack. Tally interposes itself when a creature it can see attacks a target other than Marcus within 5 feet of it. The attack roll has disadvantage.
Prepared Shield. When a creature Marcus can see makes an attack against him, he uses a reaction and expends a spell slot to cast shield if he has it prepared. His AC gains +5 until the start of his next turn, including against the triggering attack.

A pot of thyme he carries between his office and laboratory

Background

Marcus Hroth grew up above a sailmaker's shop in Shersbury, where his mother taught him the ordinary forms of daily and nightly prayer, and his father taught him to measure twice because canvas is expensive. He was an unusually gifted student, but his first great calculation was a practical failure: a tide-prediction table he proudly supplied to a harbor pilot sent a fishing boat onto a mudflat. No one died, but the frightened crew's anger changed his idea of brilliance. Since then he insists that a beautiful proof must also answer to the world it touches. After studying at the University of Basings, he became Professor of Magical Mathematics and developed a reputation for inventions that work remarkably well, provided nobody interrupts the demonstration. His analytical engine combines mechanisms copied and adapted from schematics recovered in old Dwarven ruins with his own system of punched rune cards. He believes it could make reliable magical calculation available to sailors, builders, and healers rather than a handful of wealthy arcanists. His work is bound up with orthodox devotion to Lughon, the Many-Skilled, whom Marcus honors as patron of crafts, trade, and trickster-poets. He keeps the prescribed prayers and observances with care, and sees disciplined craft as a form of reverence. That makes his aversion to bards an awkward contradiction he rarely examines. His former student Salla Kett, now a harbor surveyor, still brings him field measurements and argues that his machine must be tested outside the university. His colleague Odo Vask has secured the university's funding but wants exclusive rights to the engine. Marcus is currently racing to complete a public demonstration before Odo can sell the design to a shipping consortium.

Role in the story

A brilliant but difficult ally whose engine could transform navigation and magical industry. The characters may help him test it, protect it from commercial capture, investigate the Dwarven safeguard, or decide whether its promise justifies its risks.
