Voice

A dry, grain-edged voice, quick enough to make a list sound like a race. Forge smoke has left a faint rasp at the end of longer sentences, while years of bargaining have taught him to put emphasis on the one useful fact people might otherwise miss.

He speaks in quick, connected bursts, with the clipped efficiency of a courier calling out a delivery and the precise vocabulary of a self-taught historian. His voice has a dry, grainy edge from years around hot forges and salt air. He tends to explain practical details with his hands, then loops back to the older story behind them. When he is furious, he does not soften; his phrases become shorter and more exact.

Speech patterns

Talks quickly, linking a practical offer to a question about cost, timing, and who else knows.
Uses old place names and scraps of history to explain why a route, custom, or feud matters.
Repeats a person's name when trying to reassure them that he is listening.
When he is angry, his words become more clipped and he starts listing consequences.

How to play them

Wen Xia quickly establishes what the party needs, what they can pay, and what risks they will accept. He will find them a coastal guide if they are candid about their destination and do not endanger his contacts. He responds well to useful information, fair dealing, and respect for working people. If the party is evasive, he asks increasingly precise questions rather than making threats.

Goal

Find a trustworthy guide to the coast, then use that journey to verify an old route record that may explain where Hedd disappeared.

Motivation

To be the person who can get people where they need to go without making them feel like a burden, and to learn enough history that old mistakes stop being repeated.

Appearance

Wen Xia takes up more room than his lean frame suggests. He stands close when negotiating, angling his shoulders through a crowd as if measuring every gap for a cart. His movements are quick, economical, and balanced, with the rolling ease of someone used to ship decks and forge floors. His skin has a warm, brick-red cast, textured with a fine dusting of soot that seems to return minutes after he washes. Two short, ridged horns sweep back from his temples, often polished at the tips by absent-minded fingers. When he laughs, his broad jaw opens to reveal blunt, slightly pointed teeth, and he chews with a decisive, almost analytical rhythm. The unexpected detail: he carries a tiny, brightly painted wooden gull and sets it carefully on any table where he conducts business.

Clothing

A soot-dark wrap jacket with sleeves tied back, a rust-red sash full of chalk, waxed cord, and folded notes, and sturdy trousers tucked into salt-stained boots. He wears no armor, but keeps a smith's apron rolled at his belt.

Body language

He leans into conversations and gestures with his whole forearm, often drawing invisible routes across tabletops. When he is thinking, he presses his tongue against one blunt canine and rocks lightly from heel to toe. In a crowded room he shifts position to leave others a path, though he rarely notices that he has become the center of the conversation.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Wen Xia is fast-talking and practical, but not cold: he notices who has eaten, whose boots are failing, and which promise has been quietly ignored. In a crisis he becomes brisk and decisive, assigning tasks before anyone asks. At a forge or over an old map, he grows patient and absorbed, willing to explain one small detail for an hour. He is generous with labor and stingy with trust, and he dislikes being thanked for help he considers ordinary.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Sets his wooden gull on the table before agreeing to any deal, as if it is a witness.
Taps doorframes twice with one knuckle to estimate whether a beam is sound.
Chews the end of a strip of dried ginger while reading maps, then forgets it is there.
Counts stairs aloud in Infernal when he is tired, even if everyone around him speaks Common.
Tests a coin by spinning it on its edge, then catches it before it falls rather than letting it land.

Habits

Counts exits and likely cargo routes whenever he enters a new building.
Offers practical help before anyone has finished explaining the problem.
When worried, checks the wooden gull in his pocket to make sure it has not chipped.
Makes a point of remembering what each contact needs, then follows up at inconveniently useful times.

Traits · 4

He can turn a confused request into a workable plan in a few rapid questions, but sometimes answers before the other person has finished.
He remembers dates, routes, and obligations with historian's care, yet pretends not to notice when a friend is struggling.
He is cheerful and bustling when business is moving, then becomes restless and self-critical when forced to wait.
He gives people room to refuse a favor, but quietly remembers whether they did.

Flaws · 3

He treats favors like obligations even when the other person meant them as kindness.
He talks over people when he thinks he has found the practical solution.
He hides grief behind work and research, making it difficult for friends to tell when he needs help.

Fears · 3

Sending someone into danger because he misread a route or a person's intentions.
Losing the trust of the small network that depends on his discretion.
Becoming so useful to other people that he never chooses a life of his own.

Wants and needs · 4

A dependable guide who knows the coast beyond the marked channels.
A chance to confirm whether Hedd reached the hidden landing.
Enough money to keep his mother's smithy secure without making her feel indebted.
A partner who will tell him when his helpfulness has become controlling.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 24 · 40 ft.

Wen Xia uses speed and positioning rather than trading blows. He targets a weapon hand, a knee, or the gap in an opponent's stance, then uses his movement to break contact or protect an ally. He spends ki to evade when outnumbered and uses Flurry of Blows when an enemy is isolated. He avoids lethal force when a warning or disarm will do, but fights hard if someone threatens a traveler under his protection.

Background

Wen Xia grew up above a cramped smithy near the old harbor, where his human mother repaired anchors and his tiefling father copied shipping records for captains who preferred their histories tidy. He learned to read from cargo marks and old route maps, and to work metal by holding tongs before he was tall enough to swing a hammer. At seventeen, he joined a coastal caravan as a porter and message-runner, discovering that a person who could fix a wheel, recite a century-old treaty, and find a discreet boatman was worth more than a purse of silver. His life changed during a winter crossing when a storm split the caravan. Wen Xia found a stranded group of travelers and led them over a flooded causeway by following the submerged foundations of a forgotten imperial road. One passenger, a young mapmaker named Hedd, drowned after Wen Xia sent him ahead to check the route. Wen Xia has never stopped blaming himself, though the surviving travelers insist Hedd chose to go. Now he runs messages and small shipments between the harbor, inland smithies, and coastbound crews while keeping notes on vanishing roads and old maritime claims. His mother, Bia, wants him to settle down and take over the forge; his former caravan partner, Grren, wants repayment for a failed shipment; and the boat crews who trust Wen Xia expect him to keep their names out of official records. His current problem is that the safest guide to the coast has gone missing, while several rival captains are asking after the same person.

Role in the story

A quick-witted contact who can connect the party with a guide to the coast. Wen Xia can provide transport leads, historical context, repairs, and introductions, while his search for Hedd's fate can grow into a personal side quest.
