Voice

Terreak speaks from deep in his chest, with the gravelly breath of a creature accustomed to smoke, cold air, and shouted commands. His consonants scrape, and his sentences land in abrupt, deliberate blocks. The three heads take turns speaking in distinct cadences; when he is furious, they compete for the floor and raise their volume rather than lowering it.

His words carry the dry rasp of grit dragged across stone, shaped by years of commanding troops over wind-scoured passes. Each head has a slightly different cadence: the orange-eyed head clips commands, the blue-eyed head draws out names and conditions, and the poison-eyed head spits short judgments. When all three speak at once, their voices do not harmonize; they collide like rival officers arguing over a map.

Speech patterns

Uses royal plural when issuing orders, but switches to first-person singular when discussing family.
Frames threats as choices: 'You may leave with your name, or remain without it.'
Frequently asks what a person would sacrifice to keep their promise, then watches all three heads for the answer.
Calls Scalenovia's citizens 'my subjects' even when speaking of people who openly hate him.

How to play them

Terreak prefers audiences in a wide basalt hall where all three heads can watch different approaches. He offers practical terms before threats, but makes every concession sound like a favor he may later revoke. He respects courage when it is disciplined, and tests anyone who claims to serve him by asking what they would do if his orders endangered a child. Players may bargain with his need for legitimacy, his fear for Nautallica, or the possibility that Astrail's rebellion could be contained without a massacre.

Goal

Make Scalenovia secure enough that no dragon can challenge his claim, while keeping Nautallica's cover and the royal family alive.

Motivation

To prove that strength and fear can hold a kingdom together where family affection and old royal customs failed him.

Appearance

Terreak is an immense, three-headed dragon whose black scales look like overlapping plates of wet volcanic glass. His shoulders carry a rough ridge of blunt, weather-smoothed spines, and the scales around his joints are dulled and ridged from years of scraping through narrow basalt halls. One head watches the room, one watches the exits, and the third keeps its chin low, tasting the air. Each has a distinct gaze: ember-orange, glacial blue, and a sour yellow-green. He moves with careful, measured weight until he chooses to strike, when all three necks snap forward with unnerving coordination. Unexpectedly for a conquering king, he carries tiny clay bird whistles on a cord around one foreleg, each crudely painted by a child.

Clothing

A fitted harness of dark scale plates bears the crown sigil of Scalenovia. He wears no cloth garments, but a chain of stolen royal signets hangs between two necks, alongside the small clay whistles.

Body language

His three necks rarely point in the same direction. He plants his foreclaws as if bracing a heavy gate, holds his wings close when listening, and angles his poison-breath head toward anyone he suspects of lying. When remembering the lost scouts, he rubs one clay whistle against a foreleg scale.

Distinguishing features

His three heads have distinct colors of light in their eyes: ember-orange, glacial blue, and sour yellow-green.
The black scales along his shoulders are rubbed dull and ridged from a lifetime of passing through basalt corridors.
A cord around one foreleg carries tiny, crudely painted clay bird whistles, an unexpectedly tender keepsake for a feared conqueror.
His heads track separate sounds, giving the impression that no room can ever truly conceal a conversation from him.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Terreak craves order but is drawn to the very family ties that make his rule unstable. In council he is controlled and meticulous, giving every threat the weight of a decree. In private, he is unexpectedly attentive to small acts of craft and remembers the names of servants who have worked in his halls for years. Under pressure, his anger is not quiet: all three heads speak over one another, interrupting and correcting each other until the room feels like a tribunal. He can show genuine mercy, but afterward insists it was a calculated lesson.

Alignment
Lawful evil

Quirks

Turns one of the clay bird whistles between his claws whenever a storm begins.
Has each head count a different thing during negotiations: exits, weapons, and people who have not spoken.
Corrects the order of his own words when another head interrupts, as if chairing a council within himself.
Leaves the last bite of every meal untouched and has it carried to a ledge where winter birds gather.
Tests new messengers by asking them to describe a sound from the road rather than summarize what they saw.

Habits

He lets the orange-eyed head answer questions about loyalty, while the blue-eyed head silently studies the speaker's hands.
When a report displeases him, he asks for the same facts in a different order, testing whether the messenger changes their story.
He gives captured enemies a chance to kneel before he attacks, then treats refusal as proof that his rule is necessary.
He is visibly less composed when someone mentions lost scouts or children caught in a war.

Traits · 4

He distrusts affection as a political tool, yet remembers small kindnesses for years.
He wants a stable kingdom and rules by methods that steadily make rebellion more likely.
He admires boldness in others but resents being surprised himself.
He is protective of his daughter and niece, while refusing to admit that this contradicts his public doctrine of strength.

Flaws · 4

Confuses obedience with loyalty and often punishes people who might have served him willingly.
Cannot delegate matters involving the royal family, even when doing so would help his rule.
Keeps delaying a final assault on Astrail's rebellion because it risks killing Razlyn or other royal kin.
His pride makes him defend Rask's scheme even when he suspects the regent is building a power base of his own.

Fears · 3

That his rule will be remembered as a brief seizure of power rather than a legitimate reign.
That Nautallica will be discovered in Pennytown and used to force his hand.
That the lost royal scouts survived the Winter Woods and will return to name him a coward.

Wants and needs · 4

Recognition as the rightful king of Scalenovia.
Reliable reports on Astrail's rebellion and Rask's loyalties.
A way to keep Nautallica safe without exposing her identity in Pennytown.
A legacy that will outlast the fear holding his kingdom together.

Combat

AC 31 · HP 225 · 40 ft., fly 150 ft. (poor), swim 60 ft.

Terreak opens with fear and a breath weapon, choosing the fire cone against clustered foes, ice against escape routes, and poison against opponents holding a chokepoint. He uses flight to split the party, then focuses his three bites on whoever appears to command or heal. His command ability lets allies reposition around a threatened flank. If reduced below 60 hit points, he retreats toward the throne hall rather than risk capture, unless Nautallica or a royal child is in immediate danger.

Custom three-headed dragon trait. Terreak has three independent heads and cannot be flanked. He can make one bite attack with each head as a full attack, but each head must target a creature within reach.
Custom triune breath. Each head can use its own breath weapon once every rounds. Each is a 60-foot cone, usable separately; a creature caught in more than one cone saves against each.
Black dragon traits. immunity to acid, water breathing, and a swim speed of 60 feet.
Fearful Majesty (Su): Creatures of 14 HD or fewer within 30 feet that see Terreak must succeed at a Will save or become shaken for rounds. A creature that succeeds is immune to this ability for 24 hours. This is a custom ability.

Actions

Natural Attacks. Melee bite +24 ( plus acid); claw +24 (); 2 wings +22 (); tail slap +22 (). These are custom attacks for Terreak's Huge, three-headed dragon build. A full attack includes three bites, two claws, two wing attacks, and a tail slap.
Triune Breath Weapons. Fire head: 60-foot cone, fire damage, Reflex half. Ice head: 60-foot cone, cold damage, Reflex half. Poison head: 60-foot cone of toxic vapor, poison damage, Fortitude half. Each breath weapon is usable once every rounds. The poison breath is a custom effect, not a claim about a standard black dragon breath weapon.
Three-Headed Assault. Terreak makes one bite attack against each of up to three different creatures within reach. This custom option represents the coordination of his heads and replaces no standard Pathfinder action.
Command the Line. As a standard action, Terreak barks a battlefield command. Up to three allies within 60 feet who can hear him may each take a 5-foot step as an immediate action. This custom warlord ability does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Reactions

Background

Terreak is the brother of former king Sllaughtavious and uncle to Princess Razlyn the Scarlett Dragon. For much of his life, he was the useful prince: a commander sent to settle border disputes, feared by rivals but rarely trusted with the crown. He mistook that restraint for proof that his family considered him incapable of rule. A disastrous campaign in the Winter Woods hardened that grievance. Terreak ordered a retreat during a blizzard to save his host, but the court blamed him for abandoning a clutch of royal scouts lost in the storm. He never learned which of them survived, and the accusation became the private wound beneath his public cruelty. After his exile from Scalenovia, he joined the Dark Council, whose members helped bring Narlyx the Demon King out of imprisonment within Tartarus. With Narlyx's aid and the sly regent Rask's maneuvering, Terreak returned to take Scalenovia. Rask tricked Princess Razlyn into standing down while she learned the trade of ruling, and Terreak accepted the arrangement because it gave him the throne without a costly civil war. He now rules through fear, levies tribute from the draconic races, and calls every punishment a lesson in order. His daughter Nautallica is in disguise as an elf girl and serves as the fake daughter of Pennytown's mayor in the southern kingdom of Hollow Woods, where she assists Druell the Vrock in keeping that kingdom in line. Meanwhile, Astrail, Razlyn's sister, leads a rebellion determined to reclaim Scalenovia. Terreak receives reports of the uprising each week, but delays a decisive purge because he cannot bring himself to order the killing of another royal child.

Role in the story

The reigning antagonist of Scalenovia: a formidable monarch whose rule has made the kingdom orderly in appearance and brittle beneath the surface. The party may confront him as a tyrant, negotiate through his divided loyalties, or exploit his conflict with Rask and his reluctance to endanger his family.

“For much of his life, he was the useful prince: a commander sent to settle border disputes, feared by rivals but rarely trusted with the crown.”
