Nautallica
Nautallica
At the table
Voice
Her natural voice has a dry catch at the start of a sentence, left by years of calling over river noise. In the elf-girl role she rounds her words and lifts the ends of questions. When startled, the performance vanishes and her speech lands with the clipped certainty of a dock worker giving directions.
She speaks in short, clear phrases, with a few deliberately childlike questions in public. Her vocabulary is more precise than her assumed age suggests. When addressing Terreak, dockside shorthand and practical verbs return; when addressing the mayor, she uses the gentle domestic nicknames she learned from his household.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet her in a place where she can see the exits. Treat her supposed childhood gently without patronizing her, and she may offer an honest observation. Do not demand a confession in public. Mention Terreak and she will become guarded; threaten the mayor and her composure breaks into fierce, direct resistance.
Goal
Find a way to end the impersonation without destroying the mayor's household or betraying Terreak.
Motivation
She wants to repay Terreak for raising and protecting her, but she is no longer willing to treat every person as a useful opening. The mayor's unexpected tenderness has made the old rules feel unbearable.
Appearance
At first glance Nautallica looks like a small elf girl dressed for a respectable town household. Her pointed ears are soft leather prosthetics, carefully glued beneath a cap of pale flaxen hair. Up close, the disguise has the tidy, slightly overworked finish of a costume repaired every night: fine stitching at the temples, powdered skin at the jaw, and a faint smell of starch and beeswax. She stands with her weight on the balls of her feet, as if ready to slip through a crowd, but holds her shoulders square when watched. Her smile arrives promptly and leaves a beat late. The unexpected detail is that she carries a battered wooden bird whistle and uses it with the solemn concentration of a professional bird-caller, though she claims it is a child's toy.
Clothing
A good wool dress in river-blue, a short brown cape, practical ankle boots, and a flaxen wig pinned beneath a child's cap. Her pockets are hidden in the lining, and the hems are double-stitched for quick repairs.
Body language
She waits with her weight forward and her hands occupied, often rolling a thread spool between her fingers. When she lies, she looks directly at the listener but angles her shoes toward the nearest exit. Around the mayor, she unconsciously leans closer than her role requires.

Personality
12 traits and drivesNautallica is alert and wry, yet capable of startling tenderness. With strangers she performs a child's open curiosity while quietly measuring their intentions. With the mayor she becomes playful and affectionate, then privately recoils from how natural it feels. With Terreak she is brisk and defensive, but will still risk herself to keep him safe. When frightened, she gets more talkative; when truly angry, she stops bargaining and states exactly what she thinks is wrong.

Background
Nautallica is Terreak's daughter, raised among ferrymen, stagehands, and the itinerant players who worked the river towns. Terreak taught her to read a room before a map and to keep a second story ready whenever the first one became dangerous. When a fever swept through Pennytown, the mayor's real daughter died while the household was isolated from the town. Terreak brought Nautallica to the mayor in disguise, hoping to secure shelter and leverage before the fever panic turned against outsiders. Nautallica expected the deception to last a few days. Instead, the mayor took her in, and the false daughter became a daily role with lessons, meals, and a place at the family table. The first time the mayor comforted her after a nightmare, Nautallica nearly confessed. She stayed silent, and the silence became harder to break. Now she slips out to meet Terreak at a disused ferry shed, where he presses her to learn which town officials are selling passage rights to a distant contractor. She wants to protect the mayor, who has become genuinely dear to her, while also keeping faith with the father who taught her how to survive.
Role in the story
A sympathetic source of information and a living moral complication: she is both the instrument of Terreak's scheme and a person who has formed real bonds inside the lie.
“Terreak taught her to read a room before a map and to keep a second story ready whenever the first one became dangerous.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. She is bound by family loyalty to Terreak and by a growing personal attachment to the mayor's household.
