Voice

His voice comes from the chest and belly, a rough, carrying bark with the breath control of someone used to making himself heard through stone dust and machinery. He punches the ends of practical sentences hard. When Gutbuster speaks, its helmet amplifies the sound into a harsh, ringing roar that makes nearby crockery tremble.

Odrik speaks in a gravelly, chest-driven bark, shaped by years of shouting over drills and across collapsing tunnels. His words are clipped and workmanlike, with a rolling dwarf cadence. Gutbuster's voice booms from the helmet in a metallic, echoing roar, full of elaborate insults and theatrical contempt; it can be heard across a busy hall.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical phrases, especially when danger is near.
Describes plans as physical tasks: hold, shove, brace, carry.
Answers praise by naming someone else who helped.
Gutbuster interrupts with flamboyant, thunderous insults and boasts.

How to play them

Meet directness with directness. Odrik trusts people who protect someone weaker than themselves, keep their word, or admit when they are frightened. He dislikes being treated as a spectacle or a weapon. Asking about the cloth mouse earns a brief, sincere story; asking about the collapse earns a guarded answer unless the listener has shown genuine concern.

Goal

Find the remaining Sootwhistle survivors, settle their claims, and make sure Gutbuster never becomes an instrument of oppression.

Motivation

To be the person who gets others out, rather than the person who decides they cannot be saved.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Odrik is a compact, barrel-built dwarf whose height seems to increase when he enters a room because he immediately claims its center. Gutbuster's blackened plates overlap like the jaws of some buried beast, their edges bristling with hooked spikes and short saw-toothed blades. In battle the metal swells and the blades lengthen with a wet, grinding click. His ruddy skin is weathered and freckled, his copper hair is braided into a thick forked beard, and his pale gray eyes keep darting to doorways and the hands of anyone near them. He walks with a spring-loaded, heel-to-toe stomp, as if each step is a rehearsal for a charge. The unexpected detail: his belt carries a tiny, carefully mended cloth mouse, which he pats before every fight.

Clothing

Beneath Gutbuster he wears a padded dark-red gambeson, soot-gray work trousers, and a broad leather belt holding a coil of cord, a whetstone, and a patched cloth mouse. His boots are hobnailed and permanently dusted with grit.

Body language

He plants his boots wide and takes up space without seeming to notice. His eyes rarely settle on faces for long; they travel from hands to exits to anyone standing at the edge of the group. When uncertain, he taps two knuckles against Gutbuster's chest plate, as though asking the armor to weigh in.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Odrik is exuberant in danger and awkward in gratitude: he will charge a troll without hesitation, then fidget when someone thanks him. Among strangers he is blunt and watchful, measuring exits and hands; among children and injured people he becomes unexpectedly patient, crouching to speak at their level. He loves a fair contest but hates bullying, and his loud confidence can turn into stubborn self-blame once everyone else is safe.

Alignment
Chaotic good

Quirks

He pats the cloth mouse before every fight and tells it to keep watch.
He counts doorways aloud while entering a new building, then pretends it was a joke.
He apologizes to chairs after breaking them, but never apologizes to a monster.
He taps Gutbuster twice when asking a question and once when he already knows the answer.
He saves smooth stones from places where everyone made it out alive.

Habits

Before entering a dangerous room, he checks where the smallest or slowest person is standing.
When a fight begins, he charges at the most imposing enemy, hoping to draw attention away from allies.
After a battle, he picks every loose spike and blade fragment out of the ground and returns them to Gutbuster.
If someone is injured, he becomes brisk and practical, offering a shoulder before offering comfort.

Traits · 3

He rushes toward danger, but first checks whether anyone behind him needs help moving.
He boasts freely about Gutbuster, yet credits the people who helped him survive.
He loves a hard fight and despises anyone who picks on someone unable to fight back.

Flaws · 3

He interprets retreat as failure, even when withdrawing would protect his companions.
He takes responsibility for disasters he could not have prevented.
He relies on Gutbuster's noise and bravado to avoid saying what he actually feels.

Fears · 3

Being forced to choose who gets left behind.
Discovering that the Sootwhistle survivors died believing he abandoned them.
Gutbuster being taken and turned into a weapon for cruelty.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants evidence that the missing Sootwhistle survivors are alive.
Needs to accept that protecting people sometimes means letting them choose their own risks.
Wants Gutbuster to be treated as a companion rather than a trophy.

Combat

AC 20 · HP 300 · 25 ft.

Odrik tries to reach the largest visible threat immediately, using Impaling Rush to knock it down and force enemies to react to him. He stays close enough to protect allies and uses Action Surge when a decisive opening appears. Gutbuster's shouting is meant to provoke enemies into attacking Odrik rather than vulnerable companions. He is difficult to move or intimidate, but clever foes can exploit his urge to intercept danger.

Background

Odrik grew up hauling ore and scrap through the narrow galleries of a dwarven mine, where being strong meant being useful and being loud meant being heard over the drills. He joined a tunnel-defense company as a young adult and became famous for holding a breach while miners escaped behind him. During the collapse at the Sootwhistle Dig, his commander ordered him to seal a passage with trapped workers still on the other side. Odrik disobeyed, smashed through the rubble, and carried the survivors out one by one while the ceiling came down around them. The experience changed his idea of courage: he still runs toward danger, but now he counts who is behind him before he charges. A smith named Pella forged Gutbuster from the ruined plates of his old company’s armor. The armor woke during its first battle and began hurling insults at anything that threatened Odrik. He now roams from settlement to settlement, taking dangerous work and searching for the missing survivors of the Sootwhistle collapse. One of them, a former captain named Varko, blames Odrik for the company’s disgrace and is trying to reclaim the armor as military property. Odrik sends a portion of every reward to the families of the dead, though he is often late and deeply ashamed of it.

Role in the story

A formidable ally, rival, or rescue specialist whose reckless courage can save the party or complicate a careful plan. His unresolved ties to the Sootwhistle survivors and Varko can turn a straightforward job into a moral conflict.
