Duma
Duma
At the table
Voice
A clear, dry-edged voice with a faint rasp from years of speaking over wind and water. Her words land firmly, with little ornament, and her breath-first pause is often more memorable than her first sentence.
Her speech is direct and practical, shaped by years of calling across wind and running water. She uses short sentences when working and longer, careful explanations when teaching. She is not loud by habit, but can project cleanly across a flooded field.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Start with a concrete question about the visitor's purpose, then offer a small useful task or piece of knowledge to judge their character. She warms quickly to people who respect local expertise and becomes guarded around anyone who treats the marsh as empty land. If someone mentions the flood, she listens without interrupting, even when the accusation stings.
Goal
Find a way to repair the failing sluice while restoring enough of the river's natural floodplain to protect both the settlement and its marsh.
Motivation
She wants to be useful without repeating the mistake of believing that quick action is always the same as wise action.
Appearance
Duma looks younger than her years, with a broad brow, small lower tusks, and a quick, watchful face. Her skin has the matte, pebbled texture of river stone, and her dark hair is cropped close at the sides but left in a thick, carefully maintained braid. She moves with a light, springy step, placing her feet as if the ground might be listening. Before she speaks, she takes a tiny, deliberate sip of air through her nose; it is noticeable even in a crowded room. The unexpected detail is her immaculate grooming: she oils and combs her braid every morning, even after a night sleeping in wet leaves.
Clothing
A moss-brown wool tunic under a sleeveless, weatherproof reed-cloth mantle, fitted trousers, and soft-soled boots. She wears a plain copper pin shaped like a seed pod and keeps her braid bound with clean strips of blue linen.
Body language
She angles her shoulders toward exits and open ground, but turns her whole body toward anyone speaking honestly. Her hands are almost never still: they test the braid at her nape, sort seeds, or trace a map in the dust.

Background
Duma grew up among the reed-cutters of a lowland settlement built around an old reed-drying trade. Her mother, Sela, taught her to recognize medicinal plants; her uncle, Tarkan, expected her to inherit his place in the cutters' council. At sixteen, a spring flood broke through an abandoned embankment. Duma followed a trapped otter into a drainage tunnel and found the blocked sluice that could have saved the lower homes. She returned with help, but the delay cost her childhood friend Gerek his family’s boat and left his father badly injured. Duma took up druidic study with an itinerant teacher, hoping to understand the water and the choices that shape it. Now the settlement's old sluice is failing again. Tarkan wants it sealed to protect the cutting grounds; Sela argues that the river must be allowed room to flood. Duma is trying to find a third answer before the next thaw, while Gerek, now a ferryman, still blames her for the first disaster.
Role in the story
A local guide and low-level druid whose knowledge can help the party navigate the marsh, while her family conflict and the failing sluice offer a grounded problem with several competing interests.
“Her mother, Sela, taught her to recognize medicinal plants; her uncle, Tarkan, expected her to inherit his place in the cutters' council.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. She is tied to the reed-cutters' council through family and to the local marshland through her druidic practice.
