At the table

Voice

Dry and lightly rasped, shaped by years of calling warnings across open roads and public squares. He speaks in measured clauses, with a small catch of breath between them. When rattled, the breath breaks into audible clicks and the glow under his skin falters; he does not disguise either reaction.

His voice has the dry rasp of someone who spent years speaking over wind and crowded courtyards. Breath catches between phrases after long silences, like a bellows with a small leak. When rattled, the catches become quick clicks; when calm, each sentence lands with the plain finality of a tool set on a workbench.

Speech patterns

Uses concrete images from roads, weather, and repair work instead of grand religious abstractions.
States what he knows, then plainly marks what he only suspects.
Often asks, "What will you do if I am right?"
Avoids telling people that an outcome is inevitable.

How to play them

Begin with a practical offer or a question about the characters' immediate needs. Share only the part of a prophecy relevant to their choice, and distinguish clearly between what he foresaw and what remains uncertain. He responds well to people who act to protect others, even when they disagree with him.

Goal

Help the living end the Drairesse hierarchy by choice and reform, rather than by another conqueror's violence.

Motivation

Make prophecy serve the living instead of turning it into a chain around their choices.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A tall, spare Hodne whose outline seems cut from the bright edge of dawn. His skin has the fine, matte texture of pale river stone, warmed by a faint gold glow beneath it. Two broad wings fold behind him like layered vellum, each feather marked by hair-thin lines that shift when he speaks. He moves with a careful, measured gait, as if testing each floor for a hidden crack. His robes are patched at the elbows and hems with conspicuously ordinary brown thread, but he has kept one clean white cuff immaculate. When rattled, his breathing catches in short, dry clicks, and the light under his skin flickers in time.

Clothing

Layered, travel-worn robes of undyed linen beneath a faded ochre mantle. The elbows and lower hem have been repaired several times with plain brown thread. His right cuff is carefully washed and pressed, an incongruous point of fastidiousness.

Body language

He stands as if making room for someone unseen at his side. His hands remain open while he speaks, but his shoulders draw inward when people treat a prediction as permission to do nothing. Under pressure, his wings tuck tight and his breath clicks audibly.

Fine lines in his wings shift like writing seen through thin paper.
His robes are visibly mended with coarse brown thread, while one white cuff is kept almost unnaturally clean.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Patient with fear, impatient with evasion. He can be warm and almost mundane while tending to someone's needs, yet becomes severe when a powerful person calls their choices fate. In private he doubts his own judgment; before a crowd he presents more certainty than he feels because he knows how easily a hesitant warning is ignored.

Alignment
Compassionate and exacting; judges rulers by what they do with power, not by their stated virtues

Quirks

Leaves a deliberate gap at the edge of any table, as if reserving a seat for a late arrival.
Taps two knuckles against his breastbone before saying something he expects people to hate.
Turns cups so their handles face the person he is speaking with.
Collects scraps of ordinary repair thread, claiming each one proves something broken can be kept useful.

Habits

Checks a room's exits before greeting anyone, then apologizes if the habit makes a host feel accused.
When someone asks for a prediction, asks first what they intend to do with the answer.
Gives practical comfort before spiritual counsel: water, a seat, a repaired hem.
When troubled, counts his breaths on his knuckles, stopping if anyone notices.

Traits · 3

Offers care without making a ceremony of it.
Questions powerful people more sharply than ordinary petitioners.
Feels responsible for every warning that was misunderstood, even when he could not have prevented the outcome.

Flaws · 3

He can become so careful about not claiming certainty that he fails to give timely, direct advice.
He sometimes confuses bearing witness with taking responsibility.
His distrust of authority makes him slow to accept help from sincere leaders.

Fears · 3

That people will use his prophecy to excuse cruelty as unavoidable.
That the Drairesse will rebuild the same hierarchy under a kinder name.
That Tamas will mistake his anger for proof that he has abandoned the cause.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs someone living to preserve the uncensored final line of his prophecy.
Wants the Drairesse to confront the hierarchy they helped maintain.
Wants Tamas to know that he trusted him, even when he withheld the final line.

Combat

HP 150 · 30 feet; manifested movement leaves no tracks

Avoids fighting if words or escape can avert harm. In a conflict, he warns allies of immediate danger, uses radiant force to disrupt the greatest threat, and refuses to pursue fleeing enemies. He is a memory-spirit rather than a conventional living opponent; the GM may make his manifestation impervious to ordinary injury unless the scene specifically permits harm to it.

Background

During Grand Epoch 7, Nezáro served as a prophet of Lioris, carrying warnings between temple settlements and courts. He foresaw Emperor Karzagon's rise and told Karzagon's predecessor that the young conqueror would kill him. The warning was dismissed as a political maneuver. When Karzagon took power, Nezáro publicly declared that the Drairesse hierarchy would end by Karzagon's own hand, meaning the emperor's hunger for absolute rule would break the order that had sheltered him. The prophecy became an excuse to hunt him. Nezáro was killed by Karzagon's forces before he could explain the final clause to the Drairesse elders. Before his death, he had a close, often angry friendship with Mara, a temple copyist who challenged his certainty, and a strained bond with Tamas, his former student, who wanted prophecy to be a tool of action rather than warning. In the present, he persists as a fragment of prophetic memory in places where Lioris is invoked. He cannot return to life, but he can still speak when the living face a choice that echoes his last warning. He hopes the Drairesse will dismantle their own hierarchy rather than wait for another emperor to do it for them.

Role in the story

A dead prophet whose warnings can help the party navigate the consequences of Karzagon's rule, while challenging them to make choices rather than treat the future as settled.
