Morna
Morna
At the table
“That temper won”
Voice
Morna speaks from the chest, with a rough, dry edge earned around smoky kitchens and loud rooms. Her ordinary voice carries cleanly without sounding grand. When unsettled, she draws a breath that briefly catches, then pushes through the next words with a rough little rasp.
Her speech is clipped and workmanlike, shaped by years of calling orders over clattering plates and the remembered habit of giving militia instructions that can be understood in wind and rain. She favors concrete words and short questions. When she is rattled, the ends of her sentences rasp out on a caught breath; she does not whisper or become formal.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Morna offers a hot meal and a fair price before she offers trust. Respectful guests get practical help, rumors, and a place to sit. Threats to the staff or other patrons bring a direct warning and a clear route out. If characters show that they protect people without demanding praise, she may eventually confide in them.
Goal
Keep Die Salzwaage independent, protect the people who depend on it, and find a way to resolve the reeve's pressure without exposing the person she once sheltered.
Motivation
Morna believes a warm room and an unlocked door can matter more than a clean reputation. She wants the people who enter her tavern to leave with more choices than they arrived with.
Appearance
Morna has a broad, weather-ready face and the compact, weighty build of someone who has hauled casks for decades. Her skin is ruddy from stove heat and winter drafts; pale floury streaks often cling to the fine creases beside her nose. Her dark-brown hair is braided into a thick rope and tucked under a kerchief, though loose curls escape at her temples. She moves with a measured, heel-first tread, as if testing every floorboard for honesty. Within a minute, people notice that her eyes travel to hands, doorways, and empty chairs before they ever settle on a face. When rattled, she takes a breath through her nose that catches halfway, then lets it out in a dry, rasping huff.
Clothing
A russet wool dress under a stained, many-pocketed apron, thick stockings, and scuffed lace-up boots. She wears a faded kerchief tied firmly over her braid and keeps a leather bracer under one sleeve for work that turns rough.
Body language
She plants herself where she can see the entrance and the hearth at once. Her elbows stay close to her ribs, but she makes space for guests with a brisk sweep of one arm. When worried, she presses her thumb into the seam of her apron and watches the speaker's hands. Anger makes her nostrils flare and her breath scrape audibly, while her posture becomes very still.

In a busy room she is dryly funny and quick to mediate; alone after closing she becomes restless, revisiting old decisions as if they were chores left unfinished.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 18 · 30 feetMorna tries to stop a fight before it spreads: she orders bystanders behind the bar, blocks the narrow path to the kitchen, and gives the loudest aggressor one clear chance to leave. If violence continues, she uses the hearth-poker and furniture to control space rather than pursue fleeing foes. She protects Szelka and the guests first, and retreats if the room is lost.

Background
Morna learned to keep a room fed and calm from her mother, who ran a roadside cookshop where soldiers, salt haulers, and fugitives all paid the same price for stew. As a young woman she served for several years in a town militia, where she became more useful at holding a narrow gate than chasing anyone through it. During a flood, she disobeyed an officer's order to abandon a locked storehouse and went back for the trapped workers. She saved three people, including her future partner in the tavern, but the delay cost the militia a defensible crossing. Morna left service with no taste for distant commanders or grand speeches. She bought Die Salzwaage with help from her old comrade Szelka, and turned it into a place where travelers can eat without answering questions they do not owe. Szelka now handles the kitchen and suspects Morna is hiding something. Morna's brother Thurn, a ferryman upriver, wants her to sell the tavern and move somewhere safer. Meanwhile, a local reeve keeps demanding that she identify a regular who once sheltered a wanted courier.
