Voice

His voice has a dry, road-dusted rasp from years of calling over wind and crowds. It carries clearly without a shout, with a slight catch on names he is trying not to forget. When he is angry, the words become more precise, not louder.

His speech is plain and work-shaped, full of practical nouns: door, road, name, witness. He gives directions as if guiding someone through bad weather, and speaks the names of the dead with deliberate care. His time as a traveling preacher lends his statements a steady, public cadence, but he avoids ornament unless he is telling a story to children.

Speech patterns

Uses plain, concrete words and names the person or action he is discussing.
Asks short questions that invite a witness to give dates, places, and names.
Avoids grand prophecies when a direct warning will do.
When uncertain, says so plainly instead of claiming divine certainty.

How to play them

Meet directness with directness. Uven is willing to help people who are honest about their needs, but distrusts attempts to flatter him into endorsing a cause. Give him a specific witness, document, or act of mercy and he will engage; demand that he declare someone innocent without evidence and he will refuse.

Goal

Recover credible testimony about his arrest and execution, then make sure the victims of Karzagon's persecution are remembered by name.

Motivation

To make the truth durable enough that no ruler can erase it simply by killing its witnesses.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Uven looks like a road-worn traveler whose stillness is more striking than any grandeur. His weather-browned skin has a fine, dry texture at the cheekbones and pale salt lines at the temples; wind has roughened his lips. His white-gold wings are folded close and visibly practical, their broad feathers dulled at the tips as if they have pushed through sleet and ash. He walks with a measured, heel-first tread, then turns his whole body toward whoever speaks, giving them his complete attention. The unexpected detail is a small, carefully mended patch of bright blue sailcloth on the inside of his battered coat, hidden unless he reaches for something.

Clothing

A patched, ash-brown coat over a plain linen tunic, close-wrapped boots, and a belt repaired with knotted cord. Most repairs are rough and visible; the blue sailcloth patch inside the coat is stitched with tiny, unusually neat stitches.

Body language

He stands with his wings tucked tightly in, making himself seem smaller than he is. When listening, he keeps his chin level and his hands open. At a threat, he plants his feet and angles his body between danger and the nearest bystander.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Uven is patient with frightened people and abrupt with those who hide cruelty behind procedure. He can be warm and wry in ordinary company, especially when sharing food, yet turns fiercely exacting when someone distorts a victim's account. He believes in mercy but distrusts easy forgiveness, and his confidence in his calling is tempered by the memory of a mistake he cannot repair.

Alignment
Principled and compassionate, but uncompromising toward people who use power to excuse cruelty.

Quirks

Taps two fingers against a doorframe before entering, as if checking whether the building is still standing.
Turns any cup with a handle so the handle points toward the nearest exit.
When asked to make a promise, he touches the seam inside his coat rather than raising a hand.
Keeps a running count of people present, then recounts them before leaving.
Collects broken buttons from places where people were forced to flee.

Habits

Counts exits and vulnerable bystanders before he looks at a room's most powerful person.
When someone is frightened, he offers a practical task rather than reassurance.
When he hears an official account of an atrocity, he asks who was present and who was left out.
After using his radiant power, he checks whether anyone nearby was blinded or hurt by it.

Traits · 4

Offers practical kindness without demanding gratitude.
Distrusts authority, but does not assume every official is corrupt.
Values mercy, while insisting it must not erase accountability.
Can be unexpectedly dryly funny when danger has passed.

Flaws · 3

Treats silence in the face of injustice as a choice, even when a person is terrified or trapped.
Can become so focused on preserving testimony that he neglects immediate needs.
Has difficulty accepting help from anyone who served Karzagon, even when they have genuinely changed.

Fears · 3

That his testimony will be turned into a convenient legend and the names of the dead forgotten.
That he will once again obey a command when someone needs him to stay.
That the people who helped him will be punished for speaking.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs a safe place to preserve testimony and a way to distinguish reliable witnesses from people repeating rumor.
Wants the names of Karzagon's victims recorded without turning their suffering into propaganda.
Wants Geth to tell the truth of what he saw, without being forced into a false confession.

Combat

HP 145 · 30 ft. walking; flight 40 ft. when his wings are unobstructed (custom movement profile).

Uven holds a defensive position between enemies and anyone they threaten. He uses Witness's Rebuke to interrupt attacks on the vulnerable, saves his healing for a turning point, and strikes only when a threat persists. He does not pursue fleeing enemies unless they are carrying someone away or about to destroy evidence. His statistics are a custom, system-neutral encounter profile for Generic Fantasy, not a conversion from another game.

Background

During GE VIII, Uven served Lioris as a traveling prophet, carrying warnings from village to village rather than preaching from a protected sanctuary. He became known for remembering the names of ordinary people whom officials treated as expendable. When Emperor Karzagon's followers seized a market town to punish its residents for sheltering dissenters, Uven stood between the soldiers and the townsfolk and publicly named the orders he had seen. He was arrested, tortured, and killed; his testimony was officially dismissed as a fabrication. The experience that changed him came earlier, when he obeyed an order to leave a fever-struck settlement before he had finished evacuating its children. He survived, but several did not. From then on, he treated obedience as something that must answer to conscience. Now he persists as a deathless witness, drawn to places where the record of Karzagon's persecutions is being erased. He still searches for a missing account of the arrest and for the surviving people who can confirm what happened.

Role in the story

A powerful but limited ally whose testimony can expose Karzagon's crimes. Uven is not a convenient oracle: his knowledge is personal, incomplete, and tied to the people and places he witnessed. He can also challenge characters who mistake vengeance for justice.

“He became known for remembering the names of ordinary people whom officials treated as expendable.”
