At the table

Voice

A weathered, carrying voice with a dry edge, shaped by open-air preaching and years of speaking over work and wind. Its measured phrasing suggests a man trained to make words hold up under argument, not a performer trying to impress.

His voice has the dry, lightly rasped texture of someone accustomed to speaking across wind and open courtyards. Work-worn consonants and careful pauses reflect years of bargaining between villagers and officials. His words carry without a shout. When he delivers prophecy, he drops the usual human courtesies and speaks in short, grounded sentences, as if making sure each one can survive being repeated.

Speech patterns

Begins difficult answers with a concrete observation about weather, food, labor, or the room.
Uses short, unadorned declarations when delivering prophecy.
Asks one question at a time and waits for the whole answer.
Repeats a listener's exact words before challenging their meaning.

How to play them

Offer useful, grounded counsel before discussing prophecy. Ask what the visitor is willing to risk for the people affected by their choice. Do not pretend to know the future beyond the fragments he has actually foreseen. If someone treats him as an oracle or a weapon, remind them that he was a person before he became a warning.

Goal

Keep the truth of Karzagon's rejection from being turned into a warrant for revenge, and persuade Merya to hear the final message he left for her.

Motivation

To give people enough truth to choose freely, without letting prophecy become another ruler's tool.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Jeskir appears as a tall, luminous Hodne man whose outline wavers like heat above sun-baked stone. His feathered wings fold close, their pale surfaces crossed by narrow bands of soot-dark gold, as though he once stood too near a sacred fire. He moves with an unnerving economy: one slow turn of the head can replace a whole room's worth of searching, and he never seems to shift his weight. Within a minute, people notice that his gaze goes first to doorways and empty chairs, not to whoever is speaking. Unexpectedly, he keeps a little clay bird tucked into his sash, crudely made and lopsided, and handles it with the solemn care of a holy relic.

Clothing

A weather-worn travel mantle hangs over simple cream robes, its hem patched with mismatched cloth from several villages. A faded blue cord circles his wrist, and a brass speaking disk rests at his breast. The clothes look carefully mended rather than ceremonial.

Body language

He holds himself almost perfectly still, wings tucked and chin level. His eyes travel to exits, thresholds, and unoccupied places before settling on a speaker. When moved by tenderness, he cups the lopsided clay bird in both hands; when judging a claim, he turns one palm upward as if weighing it.

Skin
Sun-warmed bronze, softly luminous at the edges of his spectral form.
Age
Adult; his exact age at death was never reliably recorded.

Distinguishing features

His gaze checks thresholds and vacant seats before it meets anyone's eyes.
His wings bear soot-dark gold bands that do not match any known temple livery.
He carries a lopsided clay bird with the solemnity of a sacred object.
He can become completely still while the people around him fidget.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Jeskir is patient with grief and impatient with excuses. He can be warm and unexpectedly funny among ordinary people, but becomes formal and exacting when someone invokes divine or imperial authority. He longs to be remembered as a brother and neighbor, yet cannot stop turning conversations toward the moral weight of what comes next.

Alignment
Principled and compassionate, but willing to defy authority and accept the cost.

Quirks

Counts unoccupied chairs whenever he enters a room.
Sets his clay bird facing the nearest doorway before speaking.
Refuses to call a prediction a promise, even when listeners insist.
Taps the rim of his brass disk twice before answering a question about the future.

Habits

Counts empty chairs before joining a gathering.
When someone boasts of power, asks who carried the water and buried the dead.
Will spend an entire conversation helping a frightened stranger, then abruptly refuse a powerful person asking for the same favor.
After speaking a prediction, touches the clay bird as if checking whether it is still there.

Traits · 4

Offers practical kindness without making a show of it.
Distrusts certainty when it comes from someone who will not bear the cost.
Uses dry humor with people who work for a living.
Can be uncompromising in public and privately ashamed of the harm that uncompromising truth caused.

Flaws · 3

He can mistake a necessary warning for permission to disregard the people who must live with its consequences.
He speaks plainly even when a gentler approach would keep someone safe.
He assumes that refusing power makes him immune to its temptations.

Fears · 3

That people will use his fulfilled prophecy to justify cruelty in the name of certainty.
That Merya will die believing he valued public truth more than his family.
That his echo will fade before Karzagon's victims are remembered.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the speaking disk protected from both imperial loyalists and well-meaning relic hunters.
Wants Merya to know he never stopped thinking of her as his sister.
Wants the villagers harmed by the grain seizure named in the historical record, not reduced to a footnote in Karzagon's story.

Combat

HP 46 · 30 feet per round while manifested; cannot pass more than 60 feet from his brass speaking disk.

Jeskir tries to end violence by naming the truth that brought it about. He opens with Measure the Lie, then uses The Rejected Name to create distance or A Breath for the Living to protect an ally. He avoids pursuing enemies and cannot sustain a prolonged physical fight. If the speaking disk is threatened, he places himself between it and the danger even though he cannot truly shield it.

SensesSees normally; senses celestial influence as pressure or warmth nearby, without identifying its source automatically.
Custom Generic Fantasy rules. use the ratings below as bonuses on a d20 roll against a stated difficulty. No particular published ruleset is assumed.
Prophetic Refrain. Once per scene, Jeskir can speak a truth he has foreseen. One listener who understands him must either answer one direct question truthfully or suffer a brief, vivid vision that leaves them unable to act until the end of their next turn. A successful Resolve test against difficulty 16 resists the effect.
Hodne Radiance. Jeskir sheds clear, steady light in darkness and can recognize celestial influence as a pressure in the air. This does not reveal motives or automatically identify individuals.
Last Testament. As an echo bound to his brass speaking disk, Jeskir can manifest for a few minutes where the disk is present. He cannot travel far from it or affect the physical world except through his listed actions.

Actions

The Rejected Name. Custom Generic Fantasy action. Roll d20 + Presence against difficulty 15. On a success, choose up to three listeners who can hear him; each suffers psychic harm and cannot willingly approach Jeskir until their next turn. A listener who has heard his prophecy fulfilled has disadvantage, at the table's discretion.
Measure the Lie. Custom Generic Fantasy action. Roll d20 + Lore against difficulty 14. On a success, Jeskir names one nearby deception, concealed passage, or supernatural influence, if one is present. This reveals its presence, not its full nature.
A Breath for the Living. Custom Generic Fantasy action. Roll d20 + Presence against difficulty 13. One ally who hears Jeskir regains resolve or vitality, as appropriate to the table's rules, and may immediately steady themselves against fear.
Bright Rebuke. Custom Generic Fantasy action. Jeskir lashes a target within 20 feet with a ribbon of hard light. Roll d20 + Presence against difficulty 14; on a success, deal radiant harm. This is a supernatural custom effect, not a spell from a named ruleset.

Reactions

Name the Living. When an ally within earshot is threatened, Jeskir can call out the ally's name and a plain instruction. The ally may immediately move a short distance toward cover, if able. Custom Generic Fantasy reaction; once per scene.
Question at the Threshold. When someone makes a claim of divine authority in his presence, Jeskir may ask one direct question. The speaker must answer truthfully or visibly falter; this does not magically compel truth and has no effect on someone who cannot understand him.

Services they sell

Help settle a dispute by uncovering a contradiction or concealed influence.
Give counsel to someone facing a ruler, temple, or other authority.

Background

During the eighth imperial generation, Jeskir served Lioris as a traveling preacher and mediator, carrying news between scattered shrines. He learned to speak in plain terms from his mother, a keeper of roadside wells, and to listen before judging from years of settling disputes over water and burial ground. His turning point came when Emperor Karzagon's soldiers requisitioned a village's winter grain. Jeskir publicly challenged the order, then prophesied that Lioris would reject Karzagon. When the emperor later sought divine sanction and received only silence, Jeskir's warning was fulfilled. Karzagon killed him personally in a rage. His brass speaking disk survived, and his voice now returns through it as a constrained echo. His old companion Dalan, a practical shrine-mender, still tends the disk; the former imperial courier Oru keeps trying to destroy it, convinced the echo will bring another purge. Jeskir's present problem is that people treat his prophecy as proof that every other prediction he makes must also be certain.

Role in the story

A dead prophet whose warning came true, but whose surviving echo complicates any simple reading of that truth. He can guide characters through the history of Karzagon's rule, challenge would-be avengers, and reveal that prophecy cannot absolve anyone from choosing what to do next.

“His turning point came when Emperor Karzagon's soldiers requisitioned a village's winter grain.”
