Yezhket
Yezhket
At the table
Voice
A dry, slightly rattling rasp, like a small bell heard through a closed workshop door. His remembered imitations can be uncannily exact, but his natural voice has a blunt, weathered cadence. He sounds most like himself when asking a question he already knows the answer to.
His speech has the dry rasp of air passing over old bell metal, with crisp stops shaped by years of repeating whistles and calls. He cannot create an entirely new voice from nothing, so he builds sentences from sounds and speech patterns he has collected. His own phrases are measured and spare; when agitated, he speaks faster and sharper rather than lowering his voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat him as a patient, perceptive ally rather than an exposition dispenser. He will share what he knows after the characters demonstrate care with other people's testimony. He responds well to specific questions, dislikes boastful certainty, and may ask the party to help verify a sound or witness before revealing his own connection to the forged recording.
Goal
Identify who forged the reeve's voice, stop the coming violence, and prove that careful testimony can still serve justice.
Motivation
To make truth useful before it becomes merely a record of what went wrong.
Appearance
An elderly kenku with close-laid charcoal feathers, silvered at the throat and crown like soot dusted with frost. His face is sharply intelligent, framed by a neat fan of cheek feathers that he trims to matching points. He moves in measured, economical steps, head tilting in small precise increments as if weighing each sound. Before answering, he often rubs the brass clasp at his collar without seeming to notice. The effect is less frail sage than weathered watchman: a bird who has spent a lifetime listening at doors and remembers what the doors heard.
Clothing
A dark, weatherproof coat altered with slits for his wings, a high collar, and a faded scarf wrapped twice around his neck. He wears a small brass clasp shaped like a closed eye and carries a patched leather document case.
Body language
He holds himself upright with the vigilance of a sentry, shoulders tucked and chin slightly forward. His head turns toward sounds before the rest of him does. He taps two claws against his staff when impatient, and his throat feathers lift when a familiar voice is imitated.

Background
Yezhket was born among the roof-dwellers of Tallowmarket, where his family carried messages between bell towers and workshops. As a young lookout, he learned to copy a watchman's whistle, a baker's call, and the clatter of a patrol's boots. During the winter riots, he imitated the city's evacuation bell to draw a crowd away from a collapsing granary. The crowd survived, but the false alarm let a gang loot the fever ward. The guilt changed him: he stopped treating sounds as tricks and began keeping an exact record of who said what, and why. For decades he served as a discreet witness and investigator, settling disputes by replaying remembered voices. He now rents a cramped room above the old cooperage and advises people who cannot afford official justice. His closest friend is Tikka, a human bell-founder who knows his habits better than he does. His former apprentice, Goran, works for the magistrate and believes Yezhket's methods have become meddling. At present, a forged recording of the city reeve's voice is being used to incite violence, and Yezhket recognizes a tiny breath-click in it as his own.
Role in the story
A wary local ally whose knowledge of voices and old rooftops can uncover a conspiracy, while his own past connection to the forged evidence complicates the investigation.
