At the table

Voice

A dry, salt-rough voice shaped by shouting short orders over wind and rigging. He has a clipped rhythm when danger is near and leaves deliberate pauses when he wants someone to answer honestly. His hard-edged consonants are softened by a faint breathy rasp when he is tired or amused.

His voice has a dry, sanded edge from salt air and years of speaking over rigging and wind. He clips endings when giving urgent directions, but lets pauses do the work when asking for trust. His Qumon consonants land with a firm, percussive bite; when he is amused, a breathy rasp slips into the last word of a sentence.

Speech patterns

Uses short, concrete sentences when danger is near.
Asks a question, waits through the silence, then asks the more important question.
Uses shipboard metaphors even on land, especially when discussing trust or bad plans.
When speaking to captives, names available choices plainly and avoids promises he cannot keep.

How to play them

Treat him as a wary but reachable ally. Demonstrate that you respect people's choices, especially those with less power. He responds to useful information and practical acts more than grand declarations; pressuring him about his childhood or demanding unquestioning obedience will close him off.

Goal

Keep the Dreamroot territories safe and find the people who arranged his childhood sale before they can take another child.

Motivation

Protect vulnerable people without replacing one chain of command with another. He wants to make escape possible, not decide what freedom should look like for everyone else.

Appearance

Iktago is a lean, deep-blue Qumon with a long spaded tail and two backward-sweeping obsidian horns, their polished surfaces dulled at the tips from years aboard ship. His purple eyes catch light like wet plum skin. He walks with a measured, sideways roll, always favoring the deck's lee side as if expecting a sudden list; on land, he keeps the same shipboard balance and seems faintly out of step with the ground. Salt has roughened his knuckles, and his tail moves before his face gives away a thought. His patched coat fits badly at the shoulders, but a small, carefully mended child's scarf is wrapped around one horn, an unexpectedly tender keepsake on a pirate's gear.

Clothing

A weather-dark coat with mismatched patches, a high collar that protects the base of his horns, and soft-soled boots for silent movement. His belt is carefully arranged for quick access; the brass buttons are all different, salvaged from discarded uniforms. A faded child's scarf is wrapped around one horn and mended with tiny, even stitches.

Body language

Keeps his weight over the balls of his feet and angles his body toward the nearest exit. His tail taps twice against his boot when he is calculating, then goes still when he has decided. He rarely looms over people, but in a threat he becomes motionless enough to make the room feel smaller.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Iktago is watchful and dryly funny with people he trusts, yet guarded to the point of seeming indifferent with strangers. He dislikes commands but takes responsibility readily when someone is in danger. In calm moments he is patient enough to teach a deckhand how to pick a simple lock; under pressure he can turn brutally efficient, then feel guilty about it afterward.

Alignment
Compassionate anarchist: distrustful of imposed authority, but protective of people and places that cannot protect themselves.

Quirks

Counts hatchways under his breath whenever he boards an unfamiliar vessel.
Taps his tail twice against his boot before making a difficult choice.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Collects broken buttons and sorts them by the uniforms they came from.
Leaves a length of spare cord tied in a simple escape loop wherever frightened captives are kept.

Habits

Checks exits, hatches, and nearby ropes before settling into a room.
Offers practical help before asking personal questions.
Makes a point of giving frightened captives a choice, even when time is short.
When plans go wrong, becomes brisk and precise rather than theatrical.

Wants to identify the surviving buyers and experimenters connected to his childhood.
Wants enough supplies and time to keep the Dreamroot patrols effective.
Needs to tell Vaelis what he has discovered before the trail goes cold.

Combat

HP 78 · 30 feet per round (custom Generic Fantasy table value)

Uses cover, elevation, and distraction to isolate a dangerous enemy, then attacks from an angle and withdraws before being surrounded. Prefers disarming, disabling, or cutting escape routes over killing. If allies or sacred territory are in immediate danger, he takes risks to draw attackers away.

A warning about traffickers, poachers, or hostile patrols near Dreamroot.
A discreet introduction to the Silver Tide outriders, if the party has shown care for the territory.

  • Hand crossbow (weapon)A compact hand crossbow for covering retreats and disabling rigging.
  • Lock tools (tool)A set of thin picks, shims, and tension wires wrapped in oiled cloth.
  • Keepsake scarf (personal item)The faded child's scarf, mended by Iktago and never lent to anyone.

Possessions

A child's scarf, carefully repaired and wrapped around one horn.
A lock-pick roll hidden in the lining of his coat.
A folded chart marking shallow routes around Ariez Island.
A scrap of paper with several names from the facility where he was held.

Background

As a child, Iktago was taken by researchers who treated his Qumon heritage as a source of useful oddities. He remembers little of their faces, but remembers the cold brass smell of the restraints and the sound of a kettle ticking in the next room. When their operation collapsed, he was sold to pirates as cargo. He learned to pick locks because locked doors meant someone else controlled his next meal. Years later, during a raid near Ariez Island, he had a chance to flee but instead cut loose a pen of captive deckhands and was badly beaten for it. That choice changed his idea of survival: escape mattered, but so did making it possible for others to escape too. Captain Vaelis gave him a berth aboard the Astryx Gale and work protecting Dreamroot and sacred territories alongside the Silver Tide outriders. He now intercepts poachers and traffickers, sometimes by stealing their charts or sabotaging their boats before anyone draws blood. His present conflict is practical and personal: the ship needs supplies, the territories need protection, and his old captors' buyers may still be searching for him. He sends part of his pay to a former deckhand who helped him recover after the beating, but has not told Vaelis how close that old network may be.

Role in the story

A quiet ally whose knowledge of ships, locks, and trafficking routes can help the party protect Dreamroot. His pursuit of the people tied to his childhood sale can complicate an otherwise straightforward mission.

“He remembers little of their faces, but remembers the cold brass smell of the restraints and the sound of a kettle ticking in the next room.”
