Shesathi Mtembe
Fighter
Shesathi Mtembe
Species
Hyena-folk beast-person
Appearance
Shesathi is a lean, broad-shouldered hyena-like beast-person with a long-backed, slightly forward-tilted posture that makes him seem ready to spring even when standing still. He waits with one heel lifted and the other foot planted against whatever surface is nearest, constantly testing the ship's motion through his bones. His coarse tawny fur is broken by dark bands along the shoulders and ribs, while the fur at his elbows and wrists has been polished flat by years of hauling rope. His jaw is unusually wide, and his lower canines show whenever he speaks, eats, or smiles. He laughs silently first, shoulders trembling, then releases a short breath through his nose. The unexpected contradiction is his gentleness with fragile objects: he handles glass lanterns, eggs, and small birds with extraordinary delicacy despite his heavy hands and unsettling teeth.
“Measured and low, with clipped sailor's phrasing. He often pauses before important words, as if listening for the ship's movement beneath the conversation.”

Distinguishing Features
A broad, expressive jaw that reveals his lower canines when he smiles.
He balances on one heel while waiting, as if feeling an invisible deck beneath him.
The fur at his wrists is polished smooth from rope work.
His left thumb bears a tiny brass ring fitted around the claw, used to tap coded signals against wood.
He can identify most crewmates by the sound of their footsteps before seeing them.
Voice
“A low, dry baritone with a faint rasp, capable of carrying across wind and rigging without becoming loud. When amused, he makes a soft chuffing sound before speaking.”
Clothing
A sleeveless indigo watch coat reinforced with leather strips, loose sand-colored trousers tucked into tarred deck boots, a red sash containing signal whistles, and a faded green scarf tied around one wrist. His coat is fastened with small brass buttons taken from ships that no longer exist.
Body Language
He angles his torso toward the nearest exit while keeping his feet braced apart. When listening, he lowers his head rather than turning it, exposing the dark fur along his neck. His hands remain loose but never idle, usually rolling a coin, checking a buckle, or tracing the edge of a table.
