At the table

Voice

A dry, clear speaking voice shaped by calling wagon departures above the clatter of harness and wheels. His words land with the clipped certainty of someone reading a schedule aloud; stress makes him stumble over transitions, not volume.

He speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences, punctuated by precise times and distances. Years of calling departures over wagon noise have left his consonants firm and his breath slightly dry. He often starts an answer confidently, then adds a careful qualification when he realizes what the listener might infer.

Speech patterns

Answers questions about routes with exact times and distances, then catches himself and asks why the listener needs to know.
Uses practical phrases such as 'That road eats daylight' and 'Put it in writing' when anxious.
When cornered, repeats a question back with one word changed to buy time.

How to play them

Begin with useful, ordinary information about schedules and local roads. If approached kindly, Corin tests the party with a minor truth before admitting anything consequential. If threatened, he looks for a witness, an exit, or a way to trade a verifiable fact for time. He will disclose the Tribunal arrangement if he believes the party can protect him and prevent further harm.

Goal

Repay enough of his debt to end the Tribunal arrangement, then quietly correct the route information he compromised before another caravan is endangered.

Motivation

Fear of ruin first drove Corin to sell information; guilt now pushes him to limit the damage without inviting retaliation.

Appearance

Corin looks like a man who has spent years standing between a desk and a doorway. He habitually rests his weight on the balls of his feet, ready to pivot toward whoever has just entered. His russet-brown skin is powdered at the cuffs with paper dust, and his black hair is clipped close at the sides but refuses to lie flat on top. His eyes are the deep brown of wet walnut shells, always moving between faces and exits. His coat is too broad in the shoulders and has been let out, then taken in again; its left cuff is mended with an unexpectedly bright square of yellow sailcloth. The one immaculate item he owns is a narrow brass measuring rule, polished until it catches the light. He moves in short, efficient turns, like a man tracing routes on a map, and leaves an impression of alertness held together by fatigue.

Clothing

A faded umber clerk's coat with a poorly matched yellow sailcloth cuff, a high-collared linen shirt, a narrow waistcoat with repaired buttonholes, and practical boots polished at the toes but worn thin at the heels. He keeps a plain hooded cloak nearby for sudden errands.

Body language

Keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit and his hands close to his waistcoat pockets. While listening, he taps a measured rhythm with his thumbnail against his brass rule. When genuinely relieved, he lets both heels settle flat, an uncommon stillness for him.

Distinguishing features

Waits on the balls of his feet, as if ready to turn toward a newly opened door.
The yellow sailcloth patch on his left cuff is conspicuously brighter than the rest of his clothes.
Carries a brass measuring rule polished with near-ceremonial care.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Corin is meticulous enough to remember a wagon's departure minute but impulsive enough to make a dangerous bargain when frightened. With customers he is brisk and serviceable, often generous with small practical help. Alone or with someone he trusts, he can be unexpectedly wry and sentimental about the people who travel his routes. When guilt rises, he becomes defensive and insists on distinctions between what he knows and what he merely suspects.

Quirks

Measures the width of unfamiliar doorways with his brass rule, claiming it helps him estimate how a loaded cart might pass.
Turns a cup handle to point toward the nearest exit before taking a drink.
Counts steps between tables under his breath, then denies he was counting.
Keeps scraps of blank paper sorted by how loudly they crinkle.

Habits

Checks the posted departure board whenever someone mentions a road, even if the conversation has nothing to do with travel.
When a stranger enters, he notes their boots, hands, and which exit they choose before looking at their face.
If pressured, he becomes more helpful in small, verifiable ways while refusing to answer the important question.

Traits · 3

Values accuracy as a form of care, yet has used accurate information to betray people.
Wants to be trusted but treats every offer of trust as a trap until proven otherwise.
Can be calmly resourceful in a crisis, then obsess over a small mistake afterward.

Flaws · 3

Convinces himself that a small betrayal is harmless if it prevents a worse consequence.
Hides important facts even from people who might help him.
Under pressure, he overexplains routine details and becomes evasive about the central issue.

Fears · 3

That another caravan will be attacked because of information he supplied.
That the Tribunal will decide he is more useful silenced than paid.
That losing his job will leave him with no way to repay his debts.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the debt collectors to stop visiting his workplace.
Needs to know whether the route notes actually led to an ambush.
Needs protection from the Tribunal if he is to help correct the information he sold.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 4 · 30 feet

Corin is not a trained combatant. He tries to escape, put a table or doorway between himself and danger, and shout useful directions to allies. He uses Pocket Dust only to break contact, and surrenders if cornered by people he believes will keep their word.

Custom feature. Route Memory. After studying a route schedule for one minute, Corin can recall its listed stops, departure times, and cargo notes with near-perfect accuracy.
Custom feature. Clerk's Eye. Corin has advantage on checks to notice altered ink, missing entries, or inconsistencies in travel documents.

Actions

Ledger Weight. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Pocket Dust. Corin throws a fistful of chalk dust or flour at a creature within 5 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn. Once used, Corin must refill the pouch.
Clear the Aisle. Corin calls out a nearby exit, obstacle, or piece of cover. One ally who can hear him may use its reaction to move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Custom feature, usable once per encounter.

Reactions

Duck Behind the Desk. When a creature within 5 feet hits him with a melee attack, Corin may drop prone and scramble up to 5 feet toward nearby cover. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. Corin must be able to move.

Services they sell

Can explain ordinary caravan timetables and identify common discrepancies in route documents.
Can compare a route note with the public schedule if given time and a reason to trust the party.

Rewards they can give

A reliable copy of local caravan schedules, if Corin is persuaded that sharing them will not endanger travelers.
The concealed route note linking the compromised schedule to a vulnerable stretch of road.
A potential witness who can identify the Tribunal contact's dispatch mark.

Equipment

  • Route register (tool)A heavy, wood-bound book used for recording schedules; its corners are blunted from years of handling.
  • Brass measuring rule (tool)A narrow brass rule, polished and carefully wrapped when not in use.
  • Dust pouch (adventuring gear)A small pouch of chalk dust mixed with flour, intended to startle rather than injure.
  • Clerk's baton (weapon)A short, dense wooden baton kept beneath his desk for emergencies.
  • Personal effects (possessions)A few coppers, a meal chit, and a folded note listing installment dates.

Possessions

A route register containing ordinary public schedules and a few concealed annotations.
A brass measuring rule inherited from his mother.
A folded personal debt schedule.
A hidden copy of the last route note he passed to the Tribunal.

Background

Corin learned route work from his mother, who copied caravan manifests for the municipal wayhouse and taught him that a bad mark on a map could cost lives. When she fell ill, he took her post and borrowed heavily to keep her cared for. After her death, the debt remained, passed to lenders who raised the fee whenever he missed a payment. A contact serving the Obsidian Tribunal approached him with an offer for ordinary schedules and route notes. Corin told himself the information would only help them avoid delays; then a caravan was intercepted on a road he had marked as lightly guarded. He does not know whether his notes caused the attack, but he knows he made it possible. At the Golden Hart Inn, he is trying to learn who is asking after a particular shipment before the Tribunal's contact returns. His closest ongoing tie is Sefu, a retired courier who sometimes checks his work and suspects he is hiding something. Corin wants to repay the debt without losing his post or drawing the attention of either side.

Role in the story

A nervous witness and compromised route clerk encountered at the Golden Hart Inn. Corin can provide the party with a lead about altered caravan routes, but deciding whether to protect, expose, or exploit him may shape their standing with the route office and the Obsidian Tribunal.

“When she fell ill, he took her post and borrowed heavily to keep her cared for.”
From their background
Faction
Employed by the caravan route office; compromised by an undisclosed arrangement with an Obsidian Tribunal contact. He is not a willing member of the Tribunal.

Known connections

Sefu, a retired courier who taught Corin how to spot forged waybills and still considers him worth saving.
The Obsidian Tribunal contact who pays him for route notes; Corin knows the contact by a sealed dispatch mark, not a true name.
A local lender known as the Sixth Survey Office, whose collectors have begun asking after Corin at his workplace.
