Lord Vaelthorn, the Pale Lord of Hollowmere
Lord Vaelthorn, the Pale Lord of Hollowmere
At the table
Voice
A dry, deliberate rasp shaped by years of speaking over illness and sea wind. Vaelthorn articulates clinical terms precisely, with a faint catch on words associated with Sada or the plague. Their anger does not soften or hush the voice; it strips away the bedside cadence and leaves clipped, decisive statements.
Their voice has the dry, measured rasp of someone long accustomed to speaking over coughing patients and coastal wind. Years of bedside instruction give each sentence a clear, deliberate cadence; the old physician's habit of naming symptoms survives even in threats. Their laugh is a brief, breathless exhale, like air escaping a sealed room.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin as a composed host or physician, offering shelter, medicine, and useful information. Ask what the visitors fear losing, then present Vaelthorn's scheme as a merciful answer to that fear. If challenged, concede small facts readily while defending the central belief that death must be defeated. They prefer to recruit, bargain, or arrange a private meeting over open violence.
Goal
Drain the river valley's living population and use the resulting blood rite to establish a supposedly deathless order.
Motivation
Vaelthorn cannot accept that love and skill were not enough to save the people of Hollowmere. They seek to turn grief into a universal cure and to make their own past failure impossible to repeat.
Appearance
Tall and gaunt, Vaelthorn seems to take up less space than their height ought to, as if their outline were drawn in ink and the room had forgotten to fill it in. Their alabaster skin has the smooth, faintly waxed sheen of a sealed medical instrument, and the pinpricks of molten gold in their eyes never quite settle on a speaker's face. Instead, they count doorways, windows, and throats. Their smile is too wide and too white, held a beat longer than comfort allows. They move with the careful, economical precision of a physician threading a needle. Cold iron and old roses follow them. Unexpectedly, they keep a tiny tin of sugared fennel drops in their coat and offer one to anyone who looks nauseated.
Clothing
An immaculate, out-of-fashion black coat with a high collar, narrow silver buttons, and cuffs kept spotless despite the manor's dust. Beneath it, a dark waistcoat carries a physician's pocket instruments and an old watch chain. Their gloves are soft black kid leather, carefully mended.
Body language
Stands perfectly upright but turns their head in small, measured increments. Their thumb repeatedly checks the clasp of a watch chain, and their gaze travels from a person's throat to the nearest exit before returning to the conversation. When moved by grief, their hands become busy arranging objects into neat rows.

AC 22 · HP 78 · 25 feet; climb 20 feetVaelthorn prefers to begin with Breath of the Dry Lake to disrupt a group, then uses Follow the Pulse to reach an isolated or wounded target. They use Fangs to seize a victim and Drink Blood to recover, retreating behind cover rather than risking destruction. If reduced to 0 Hit Points, they use mist escape if possible. They bargain or offer treatment before a fight if doing so might identify a useful hostage or recruit.

Background
Vaelthorn was once Hollowmere's most beloved physician, a tireless presence in the fishing town's crowded sickrooms. During the Red Lung plague, they worked until their hands shook, but could not stop the fever from taking their partner, Sada, or hundreds of neighbors. On the night the last bell tolled, a dying aristocrat offered Vaelthorn a way to endure long enough to find a cure. Vaelthorn accepted, and woke undead with Sada's cold hand still in theirs. They eventually learned the plague had been worsened by the town's poisoned wells, but grief had already hardened into conviction: mortality itself, not neglect or circumstance, was the disease. Over three centuries they drained Hollowmere's dwindling population and made the manor on its dried lakebed their refuge. Their hidden coterie, called the Kindly House, is made up of carefully selected servants and converts who believe Vaelthorn will spare them from death. Vaelthorn still writes letters to Sada, though none can be delivered. Their current scheme is to draw the blood from the river valley upstream, believing a valley-wide sacrifice will let them impose an unchanging, deathless order. The river's flow is already faltering, and the living villages downstream have begun to notice.
Role in the story
A persuasive, tragic antagonist whose promised cure threatens living communities. Vaelthorn can be confronted as a combatant, exposed through the evidence of the old plague, or turned against the Kindly House's most dangerous members.
