Karex the Mirrorforged
Karex the Mirrorforged
At the table
“the answer both sides were waiting to hear.”
Voice
A dry, clear voice with the faint rasp of paper drawn across stone. The rhythm is measured like a courier reciting a message for exact repetition, but the pauses are oddly intimate, as if Karex expects each listener to answer their own reflection.
Karex speaks in evenly spaced phrases, with the careful articulation of someone trained to carry messages without altering them. Their words have a dry, faintly papery rasp, shaped by years of reading aloud in stone archives and whispering through citadel passages. They do not raise their voice to dominate a room; they let pauses make listeners supply the pressure themselves.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Karex listens for what a visitor wants but does not pretend this is mind-reading. They offer a precise truth, then wait to see what the visitor does with it. Respect direct questions and clearly stated bargains. Threats make them attentive rather than frightened; appeals involving ordinary people can make them abandon an advantage.
Goal
Find who is forging Flaw Verses in Karex's cipher, prevent another factional catastrophe, and learn whether their connection to Zarvien is a true origin or another borrowed story.
Motivation
To discover whether identity can be chosen rather than inherited, and to stop others from turning uncertainty into another war.
Appearance
Karex is tall and spare, with silver skin like finely beaten foil that has been handled too often: soft ripples cross the throat and wrists when they turn. Their face is a seamless, mirror-bright mask, reflecting each onlooker's expression while remaining blank to Karex's own awareness. Twin obsidian shards serve as eyes. Their hair is a static shimmer of fractured light, lifting in tiny angles even in still air. A pale pleated linen coat hangs without visible seams or fasteners and parts like water around their legs. They move with a gliding, almost absent gait; the air briefly buckles under each silent step. The unexpected detail is a small, muddy clay bird tucked into the immaculate coat, its chipped beak carefully repaired with thread.
Clothing
A hooded coat of pale, finely pleated linen, cut to flow around the legs without visible seams, buttons, or ties. The hem is immaculate except for one faint clay smear from the little bird kept inside.
Body language
Karex holds their shoulders level and their hands loosely folded, as if waiting for a sentence to finish. Their head tilts a fraction when someone lies, not as accusation but as careful listening. They turn their whole body toward whoever is speaking. In danger, their stillness breaks into smooth, economical motion, favoring no side and making no sound.

Personality
13 traits and drivesKarex is meticulous and patient, yet capable of abrupt, costly compassion when someone is being used as a pawn. They are persuasive without being warm and truthful without being forthcoming. In public, their stillness makes every exchange feel like testimony; among the endangered, they become decisive and almost startlingly practical. Their calm is not certainty. It is the discipline they use to conceal that they no longer know which thoughts are their own.
- Alignment
- Unsettled and self-directed; Karex honors neither side's claim to moral authority.

Background
Karex was born in the aftermath of a failed prophecy, a harmonic reflection that Concord scribes insist should never have taken form. The Hodne citadel raised them as a celestial ward and trained them to listen, carry messages, and disappear into ceremonial crowds. During the Great Schism, Karex secretly carried messages to the Abyssborn as well. They believed that keeping both sides informed might prevent either from mistaking silence for consent. At the Anvil Sky, they passed Flaw Verses, inverse Edict lines, to both factions. The final eruption followed. Whether Karex caused it, hastened it, or merely gave two already-warring sides the excuse they wanted remains contested. The event changed them: afterward, their reflection stopped returning an expression of their own, if it ever had. Karex served as a dual agent during the First Trial, then abandoned both sides when each demanded exclusive ownership of the truth. A cracked mask associated with them was found in both Hodne and Qumon relic chambers, each faction blaming the other for its presence. Today, Karex searches for the missing original verses and for Zarvien, whose reflected tune they carry. They maintain a wary correspondence with Sessi, a Concord copyist who has risked her position to preserve evidence, and are hunted by Thalen, a former Hodne handler who believes Karex can still be made useful. Their current problem is immediate: someone has begun sending forged Flaw Verses under Karex's old cipher, and both factions are preparing to answer them with force.
Role in the story
A high-level, morally complicated informant, adversary, or uneasy ally whose history links the Great Schism, the First Trial, and the Anvil Sky eruption. Karex's cracked mask is claimed by both Hodne and Qumon relic chambers, a lasting emblem of betrayal and disputed history.
“The Hodne citadel raised them as a celestial ward and trained them to listen, carry messages, and disappear into ceremonial crowds.”
- Faction
- Formerly raised and trained by the Hodne citadel; secretly served as a courier to the Abyssborn during the Great Schism. Now claims allegiance to neither faction.
