At the table

Voice

A dry, papery rasp shaped by formal celestial recitation and years of delivering messages under pressure. Her breath is audible between phrases. When rattled, it catches in a brief chime before she resumes, often faster and more exact than before.

Her words have the clipped clarity of someone trained to deliver verdicts and the careful pacing of a former courier who learned to speak over wind and alarms. A dry rasp rides each breath, as though her voice passes through parchment. When startled, that rasp catches into a short chime; when she is angry, she speaks more quickly and stacks precise qualifications until the other person has no room to misunderstand her. She does not sing or whisper by habit.

Speech patterns

Uses precise, conditional statements: 'If you mean to keep that promise, name its limit.'
Quotes formal language accurately, then points out the word that has been omitted or altered.
When speaking of personal matters, replaces direct feeling with a practical observation.
Calls people by their chosen names, but uses titles when she intends to keep emotional distance.

How to play them

Vaedra first assesses what the other person wants and what they are willing to risk. She offers useful, verifiable help in exchange for a narrow favor, testing whether the person keeps terms. Respect candor and refuse to force a confession; she is more likely to reveal the truth after someone admits their own complicity. If accused of betrayal, she does not deny it, but initially argues about consequences rather than harm.

Goal

Find a way to reach Ozikhal's Abyssal prison before the Chorus discovers its failing seals, then decide whether to free him and face what follows.

Motivation

She wants to undo the betrayal without pretending that undoing it will erase what she did.

Appearance

Vaedra has the unnervingly composed posture of a being trained to be seen from below: chin level, shoulders still, every turn arriving a fraction after her gaze. Her Qumon features are fine-boned and severe, with skin like warm ivory glazed in faint, pearly scales along the temples and collarbones. A pair of once-feathered wings has collapsed into long, ash-pale vanes that trail from her shoulder blades like torn ceremonial fans; their edges click softly against one another when she moves. She keeps her head shaved to a dark, shining stubble and polishes it with scented oil, an unexpected vanity for a fugitive operative. Her breath has a dry, papery rasp, as if passing through old vellum, and when startled the rasp catches into a brief, unmistakable chime. She leaves the impression of a beautiful statue that has learned to lie.

Clothing

A fitted charcoal traveling coat lined with faded gold script, a high wrapped collar, soft boots, and a veil of fine black mesh she can draw over her face. Her clothing is carefully repaired but never newly made; old ceremonial seams remain visible beneath the practical tailoring.

Body language

Her hands remain folded or occupied, often turning a ring until its engraved face points inward. She watches people with her head still and her eyes moving first. Under pressure, her shoulders rise and the dry rasp of her breathing breaks into a single bright chime.

Distinguishing features

Shaved, oil-polished scalp that catches light like dark glass.
Ash-pale, ragged wing vanes that click softly when she turns.
Dry vellum-like breathing that catches into a brief chime when she is startled.
Keeps her grooming immaculate despite worn, repeatedly mended clothes.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Vaedra is disciplined enough to make a lie sound like testimony and compassionate enough to remember the names of people a decree erased. In danger she becomes brisk, analytical, and difficult to read; among the injured she is unexpectedly patient, though she will still turn care into a task list. She craves order because disorder once gave the Chorus leverage over her, yet she distrusts every institution that claims to embody it. When challenged about her past, she can be coldly exacting; when someone accepts responsibility without demanding absolution, her composure falters.

Alignment
Lawful, though her obedience to law is increasingly at war with her conscience.

Quirks

Turns a ring until its engraved face points inward whenever she is deciding whether to lie.
Counts doorways twice, once on entering and once before leaving.
Polishes her shaved scalp before sleep, even while traveling in hostile country.
Leaves a cup of water untouched beside any person she is questioning.
When a conversation becomes sincere, aligns nearby objects into a straight row without noticing.

Habits

Studies exits, reflective surfaces, and the hands of anyone speaking about law or loyalty.
When offering help, gives a practical price or condition rather than a comforting promise.
If she hears a sentence phrased like an official verdict, briefly stops breathing before answering.
Avoids speaking Ozikhal's name in places where old wards might carry sound.

Traits · 4

Precise and observant, but capable of deliberate evasions.
Protective of vulnerable people, yet slow to trust them with the whole truth.
Values order while questioning whether law deserves obedience.
Can show tenderness through practical care, then retreat when it is noticed.

Flaws · 4

Treats people as variables when she is frightened.
Mistakes secrecy for protection, even when it isolates allies.
Can recite the reasons for her betrayal more readily than she can apologize for it.
Her vanity about her grooming is a fragile remnant of the angel she used to be.

Fears · 3

That Ozikhal will be released only to become a weapon or a worse danger.
That the Chorus will learn she is searching for the prison's entrance.
That her remorse is only another way of making herself feel important while survivors continue to suffer.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants a route to the Abyssal prison that will not alert the Chorus.
Needs reliable evidence about the prison's condition and the truth of the edited founding record.
Wants someone to judge her actions honestly without mistaking remorse for repair.

Combat

HP 58 · Custom: swift, controlled movement; use the table's ordinary movement rules. Veilstep is a separate once-per-scene custom ability.

She avoids a fair fight. Vaedra begins from concealment, tests an opponent's reach, and attacks straps, weapons, and escape routes before risking a killing strike. She uses terrain and misdirection, then withdraws if a fight threatens to expose the Abyssal Lock. Her custom abilities and numeric profile should be adapted to the GM's Generic Fantasy resolution method.

Fallen Celestial. Vaedra can sense active celestial wards and the presence of a creature bound by an oath, within a short distance, but cannot identify the oath's full wording.
Veilstep. Once per scene, Vaedra can cross from one patch of shadow to another she can see, provided neither is warded. This is a custom feature, not a claim about a canonical rule.
Abyssal Lock. Vaedra knows the hidden conditions of Ozikhal's prison and can recognize signs of its strain. She cannot open it without a cost she has not yet accepted.

Actions

Hook-and-Sever. Custom attack. Vaedra strikes with her narrow hooked blade, then uses her other hand to disarm, cut a strap, or seize a small object. Resolve the attack and any secondary contest using the table's normal method.
Twin Crescent Cast. Vaedra throws a pair of crescent blades at one or two targets in reach. On a strong success, a target is also driven from cover or loses hold of a small carried item.
Borrowed Judgment. Custom social action. Vaedra speaks a fragment of the Radiant Chorus's old judgment. A listener who recognizes the authority may hesitate or reveal their allegiance; this is not magical compulsion.

Services they sell

Can interpret obsolete Chorus verdicts, seals, and covert travel procedures.
Can arrange discreet passage through territories still governed by inherited Chorus law.
Can identify celestial wards and signs of a failing oath-bound prison.

Rewards they can give

A copy of a restricted Chorus route or obsolete legal writ.
A safe passage through one old celestial ward, if Vaedra can arrange it.
The threshold ring's location and a partial clue to Ozikhal's prison, offered only after trust is earned.

Equipment

  • Hooked crescent knife (weapon)A narrow hooked blade designed to catch weapon guards, straps, or clothing; not enchanted.
  • Paired crescent blades (weapon)Two balanced crescent throwing blades with shallow grooves for a secure grip.
  • Threshold ring (relic)A plain dark ring containing a concealed sliver of the old threshold seal connected to Ozikhal's prison.

Background

Vaedra was one of the eight figures named in the Radiant Chorus's disputed founding record. During the Great Schism, while Lioris fought the Chorus and the heavens lost their voice, she lived on the mortal plane with Ozikhal. She loved him, and for a time believed their life together could stand outside celestial politics. The Chorus's agents eventually made that belief impossible: they offered her a choice between surrendering Ozikhal to their judgment or watching the mortal settlements around them be branded as accomplices. Vaedra secretly chose the Chorus. She lured Ozikhal to a prepared threshold and locked him in the Abyss, telling herself the prison was temporary and that she could negotiate his release later. It was not temporary. The act severed her standing among the celestials and began the fall that stripped her of her true wings. In the Chains and Fire era, she carried verdicts and secret instructions between Chorus principals, while refusing to participate directly in the worst purges. She did not stop the Blossomblood Massacre, and the knowledge has outlasted every excuse she made for it. Now the Chorus has few confirmed members but many inherited laws, records, and agents. Vaedra is trying to find a way into the Abyss without alerting the others. Ozikhal's prison is weakening, and she fears the Chorus will discover her plans before she can decide whether he will forgive her.

Role in the story

A dangerous former ally who can expose the Radiant Chorus's compromised history, help the party navigate its inherited laws, or become an antagonist if they threaten the prison before she is ready. Her central conflict is not whether she betrayed Ozikhal, but whether she can face him without demanding forgiveness.

The Radiant Chorus, one of its eight named principals; secretly acting against the Chorus's control of Ozikhal's prison.

Known connections

Ozikhal, her former lover, whom she betrayed and imprisoned in the Abyss; she wants to reach him but cannot predict what he will do when freed.
Valkherion, a founding figure of the Chorus and architect of the Purewing Crusades; Vaedra fears his certainty more than his weapons.
Tavrion, the legal authority whose Echo Absolutist Mandate gave suspicion the force of policy; Vaedra has carried his sealed orders.
Zherath, whose admission of altering a god-mind's root-memory makes every Chorus record suspect, including the founding account that names Vaedra.
A surviving witness of Spiral Haven, now living under an assumed identity; Vaedra quietly sends provisions, but has never confessed her role.
