Zarvien
Zarvien
At the table
Voice
A calm voice that seems to vibrate in the air around the luminous slit. The sound is shaped by ages of reciting testimony and listening for distortion: clear, deliberate, and faintly breath-textured, with no warmth added merely for effect. Zarvien’s name itself lands in two blunt beats; their other words are spaced with the finality of a completed entry.
A steady, humanlike voice with a faint vibration behind each word, as though the air is testing its weight. Its texture carries the breathy rasp of wings moving through dry air and the measured cadence of someone accustomed to reading testimony aloud. Zarvien’s name is spoken with a compact, blunt sound; the rest of their speech is evenly spaced, never sing-song. When distressed, the voice develops a second, slightly delayed resonance that suggests Karex’s distant reply.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Zarvien communicates through the pans until a visitor relinquishes every name and false identity they currently use. Once they speak, ask one clear question at a time. They answer literally, cannot knowingly lie, and will not add unasked-for information. Earn cooperation by showing concern for the people affected by the records, not merely by demanding a verdict. Karex may help bridge Zarvien’s rigid procedure and a visitor’s urgent need.
Goal
Discover who is altering the Weighing’s petitions and prevent the institution from condemning people on corrupted evidence.
Motivation
To make truth serve the living without allowing fear, favoritism, or convenience to corrupt judgment.
Appearance
A tall, sexless humanoid whose seamless silver robes ripple like liquid mercury without ever wrinkling. Where a face should be is a smooth oval of pale light, interrupted by a single horizontal slit that opens and closes with the steady rhythm of a breathing scale. Two pairs of translucent wings fold behind the shoulders, their fine gold veins catching light like hairline cracks in glass. The robes make no sound when Zarvien moves; instead, the air seems to hesitate around them. Their unexpectedly noticeable carried object is a tiny wooden whistle, absurdly plain beside the celestial spectacle, with one side worn smooth by repeated handling. The overall impression is of a solemn instrument that has learned to wait.
Clothing
Seamless silver robes that flow like mercury over the body. Their hems remain clean even in dust or rain, and no clasp, seam, or fastening can be found. They carry no weapon.
Body language
Zarvien stands with the stillness of a balanced instrument, but the pans at their sides make tiny corrections with every breath nearby. Their wings fold in exact layers when patient and flare out of sequence when distressed. The luminous slit narrows toward evasions and opens fully when someone speaks plainly.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesSerene and patient in ordinary conversation, Zarvien becomes startlingly swift when someone is in immediate danger. They are tender toward plain, painful admissions but indifferent to suffering that is described only as a statistic. Their exactness protects them from manipulation, yet also keeps them from offering comfort unless someone asks for it directly. In private, they fret over Karex’s safety and the lost child from the Ashen Census, feelings they treat as inconvenient evidence rather than grief.
- Alignment
- Neutral, guided by exactness rather than law or mercy.

Combat
HP 180 · Custom encounter rating: swift flight and deliberate walking; exact movement distance depends on the campaign’s Generic Fantasy rules.Zarvien avoids combat and does not pursue fleeing opponents. They use the pans’ resonant force to separate aggressors from bystanders, then employ the Weight of the Word to interrupt immediate violence. If threatened by overwhelming force, they use Veil of the Scales to withdraw or protect someone else. They will not use truth-sensing as a substitute for evidence.

Background
Zarvien is a Hodne, an angelic being shaped as the living embodiment of the Scales of Lioris and appointed warden of the Celestial Weighing. In the first age of their service, they believed that a perfectly measured truth would relieve suffering. That belief ended during the Ashen Census, when a flood of displaced mortals arrived at the Weighing seeking refuge. Zarvien correctly identified a forged identity among them, but their insistence on exact procedure delayed the evacuation. People died while the truth was being established. Since then, Zarvien has understood that accuracy and mercy are not the same thing, though they still struggle to act on that knowledge. They are the twin tune of Karex, with whom they share a resonance that neither can fully silence. Karex has repeatedly urged Zarvien to intervene before certainty is complete; Zarvien considers that advice dangerous and secretly depends on it. In the present, a series of altered petitions has made the Celestial Weighing’s records contradict the memories of its own wardens. Zarvien is tracing the interference while trying to keep the institution from condemning the wrong souls. The whistle they carry belonged to a child rescued during the Ashen Census. They have never learned who the child became.
Role in the story
A formidable celestial witness and potential ally whose exacting rules can frustrate the party. Zarvien can expose contradictions in a mystery, but only answers what is explicitly asked. Their investigation offers a chance to confront the difference between truthful procedure and just outcomes.
