Voice

His voice has a dry, road-worn rasp, as if dust has settled into the edges of each word. It carries clearly over wagon noise without becoming loud, and his consonants land with the clipped certainty of someone used to giving directions in bad weather.

He speaks in practical, clipped phrases learned from giving instructions over wagon noise. Years on the road have given him a habit of naming distances and conditions before opinions. When telling a story, he slows down and adds oddly precise details about the weather, the ground, or the sound a wheel made.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical sentences when discussing danger, then becomes unexpectedly elaborate when describing roads.
Asks people where they intend to sleep before asking where they intend to go.
Turns praise aside with a joke about bad weather or worse boots.
Calls a plan 'sound' only after testing how it fails.

How to play them

Lasker is easiest to approach through practical questions: route conditions, safe lodging, or what a traveler needs carried. He tests trust by offering a small useful favor without making a show of it. He dislikes grand promises and responds well to people who admit uncertainty. If confronted with his past, he first jokes, then answers directly if the other person stays.

Goal

Expose whoever is staging attacks on the north road before honest escorts and travelers are driven away.

Motivation

He wants to protect travelers without becoming the kind of guard who values cargo, orders, or reputation above lives.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Lasker looks like a man assembled for hard weather: compact, broad through the chest, and always leaning slightly forward as if listening for a wagon coming around a bend. His skin is wind-roughened and freckled across the nose. His dark hair is clipped close at the sides but kept in a rigid, glossy crest, combed with such precision that even a muddy march does not seem to disturb it. His palms are ridged and callused from years of hauling ropes and handling weapons, while the backs of his hands are stained with blue-black ink from marking routes. He walks with a careful, measured heel-to-toe step, avoiding loose stones without appearing to look down. People tend to remember the contrast between his road-worn kit and his immaculate hair.

Clothing

A patched dark-green travel coat over a mail shirt, reinforced trousers, mud-stained boots, and a faded red scarf that doubles as a bandage or signal flag. His belt carries a sword, a whetstone, and a little tin comb.

Body language

He plants his feet as if bracing a cart on a slope and turns his whole torso toward whoever speaks. His hands are usually occupied with a strap, whetstone, or folded route scrap. When uneasy, he presses his thumb against the worn seam of his sword belt.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Lasker is strict about preparation but generous with the people preparation is meant to protect. He can be blunt and suspicious when someone waves away a risk, yet patient and almost playful with frightened travelers. In a calm mood he enjoys arguing over maps; under pressure he becomes decisive and spare with words. He resents being called brave, though he will put himself in danger without hesitation.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps each wheel hub twice before a wagon departs, claiming the sound tells him whether it is ready.
Keeps his tin comb in the same pocket as his whetstone.
Names the winds by the direction they push his hair rather than by compass point.
Counts stair steps under his breath, then denies doing it.
Leaves the last bite of any meal untouched until everyone at the table has eaten.

Habits

Checks wagon harnesses and door latches before sitting down to eat.
Offers practical help before asking what someone can pay.
Keeps a running count of people in a room, then pretends he was merely looking for a window.
When embarrassed, vigorously smooths his hair crest as if correcting a tactical error.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 44 · 30 ft.

Lasker fights to keep enemies away from civilians and exits. He uses Trip Attack to break a charge, Menacing Attack against a foe threatening a weaker ally, and Precision Attack when a dangerous target must be hit. He prefers to hold a narrow approach with his longsword, switching to his longbow when an enemy retreats or takes cover. He uses Action Surge to finish a pressing threat or reach someone in danger, and saves Second Wind until he has taken a solid hit.

Background

Lasker grew up carrying freight on the pitted north road, where his mother kept a roadside cookfire and his father repaired wagon axles. He learned to read by tracing mile marks and cargo symbols, then joined a caravan guard company for steady meals. During a flood-season crossing, his captain ordered the guards to abandon a wagon of trapped travelers to save a shipment of medicine. Lasker disobeyed, cut the traces, and helped the travelers reach high ground. The medicine was lost, but the survivors lived; the company dismissed him and blamed him for the loss. He now works independently, escorting people and small loads through dangerous country. He sends part of every fee to his mother, who still runs a cookfire at Midgebank, and regularly argues with his former captain, Kütuk, who insists the old order saved more lives in the long run. His current trouble is a string of staged road attacks designed to make independent escorts look unreliable.

Role in the story

A capable road-side ally whose knowledge of travel and guarded routes can draw the party into a conflict over staged attacks, old loyalties, and the cost of choosing whom to save.
