Joaquin Mondragon
Joaquin Mondragon
At the table
Voice
A weather-dried rasp with a faint hitch on deep breaths, made more noticeable after exertion. His voice carries easily across a room, shaped by giving commands outdoors and telling stories at festivals. Anger makes him speak faster and more forcefully, not softer; when afraid, he lets out one abrupt snort before he can answer.
His voice has a dry, breathy rasp from years of dust, cold rides, and an old injury sustained in a cavalry fall. The sound is sturdy and easy to hear across a stable yard. He speaks in short, practical phrases when making a plan, but gives stories a broad, stage-ready flourish. When rattled, his breath catches audibly and his words come out too quickly until he regains control.

How to play them
Joaquin meets strangers with open courtesy but watches how they treat servants, children, and defeated foes. He responds well to direct questions and practical offers. He is wary of anyone who demands blind loyalty or treats the badge as proof that he cannot be harmed.
Goal
Expose the person forging orders in his name and negotiate a lasting peace between the rival households without turning the badge into a symbol of one family's superiority.
Motivation
He wants to prove that courage means protecting people when praise, victory, and family approval all demand something else.
Appearance
Joaquin is broad-shouldered and powerfully built, with sun-browned skin roughened by years of riding, dust, and hard weather. His dark hair is kept short at the sides and falls in a stubborn wave over his brow. He moves with the compact, economical balance of someone accustomed to a horse's shifting weight, but his breath gives him away: it rasps faintly through an old riding injury, like leather drawn over dry wood. When startled, he holds his breath for a beat, then lets it out in a sharp snort before answering. His armor is polished where his hands habitually touch it and dulled everywhere else. The badge at his chest catches the light with an almost warm gleam, and the unexpected detail is that he carries a tiny, carefully folded paper theater in his saddlebag, complete with painted figures he made himself.
Clothing
A practical dark-red riding coat under fitted half plate, sturdy gloves, and travel-worn boots. His blue sash is patched at the hem, and the Badge of Everlasting Life is displayed openly over his breastplate.
Body language
He stands squarely, shoulders relaxed but ready, and turns his whole body toward whoever is speaking. One thumb rubs the edge of his badge when he is uncertain. He tends to lean forward when listening, as if preparing to catch someone who might fall. When rattled, his jaw tightens and his breath catches audibly before he forces himself to speak.

13 traits and drivesJoaquin is sociable and confident in a crowd, yet privately suspicious of easy praise. He can be blunt about danger and surprisingly patient with people who are learning. When relaxed, he tells theatrical stories and encourages others to take the spotlight; when pressured, he becomes rigidly responsible and tries to carry every risk himself. His tenderness toward the frightened sits uneasily beside his pride in being a formidable fighter.

Background
Joaquin Mondragon was raised in a family expected to produce heroes, and he learned early that being admired is not the same as being known. As a young man he survived a disastrous cavalry charge during a border uprising by disobeying an order and leading trapped villagers through a dry aqueduct. His father called it cowardice; the survivors called it courage. Years later, during a festival duel meant to settle a political feud, Joaquin saw the rival champion's frightened young son in the path of a falling balcony. He abandoned his winning strike to save the boy, and the badge now called the Badge of Everlasting Life was entrusted to him afterward. Its magic is a promise of endurance, not immortality. Joaquin's closest ties are to his younger sister, who runs a roadside clinic and resents his habit of leaving before difficult conversations, and to the rescued boy, now a principled young officer who still argues with him about the meaning of duty. Joaquin is currently trying to prevent a new feud between the two families while investigating who has been falsifying orders in his name. He fears the culprit may be someone he once trusted.
