Bayaulan
Bayaulan
At the table
Voice
Their voice has a bright, slightly breathless edge, with dry little catches from smoke and dust around the caravan's dye pots. They shape words carefully when explaining magic, but family names and familiar jokes come out in a tumble. Their name, Bayaulan, rolls across open vowels before ending with a soft, firm stop.
Bayaulan speaks in quick, clear bursts shaped by caravan life: practical terms, precise questions, and occasional dye-maker's metaphors. They often restart a sentence to make it more accurate. When excited, their words tumble together; when frightened, they become unnervingly specific.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Bayaulan as capable without expecting them to act like an adult. Explain risks plainly, offer a choice of useful tasks, and do not promise safety you cannot guarantee. They warm to people who respect their family and their craft. They shut down when dismissed as foolish or used as a tool.
Goal
Help their family recover the dye-house and its pattern archive without exposing anyone to the dangerous magic hidden in its wards.
Motivation
To prove that careful knowledge can protect people, and that being young does not mean being useless.
Appearance
Bayaulan is a small halfling child whose quick, deliberate movements make them seem to arrive a moment before their shadow. Their russet-brown skin is dusted with pale freckles across the nose, and their thick black curls are gathered under a patched cap that sits slightly askew. Their robe hangs too long at the sleeves and has been let out with careful, visible rows of blue stitches. A little brass kettle charm, polished bright from constant rubbing, is sewn inside the collar. The unexpected detail is their hands: both palms and fingertips are stained a persistent deep indigo from the dye they use to mark spell diagrams on scraps of cloth.
Clothing
An oversized, smoke-brown apprentice robe over a patched green tunic, snug leggings, and soft boots. The left sleeve is hemmed neatly, while the right has been repeatedly repaired with blue thread. Their cap is sun-faded, and a brass kettle charm is hidden inside the collar.
Body language
They lean forward when listening, as if trying to catch a thought before it escapes. Their feet are nearly always angled toward a doorway. When nervous, they rub the brass kettle charm through the fabric at their collar; when confident, they spread both indigo-stained hands flat on the table.

13 traits and drivesBayaulan is eager to be trusted with real work but suspicious of praise that sounds like a trick. In a crisis they become startlingly organized, counting people and exits; afterward they may tremble and insist they are fine. They adore puzzles and practical jokes, yet are serious about promises. Around family they are bossy and affectionate; among strangers they test the room with questions before offering anything personal.

If a friend is threatened, they may make a reckless move to draw attention away.

Background
Bayaulan grew up in a caravan of itinerant dyers and menders that stopped at the market town of Split Ford each spring. Their grandmother, Yulduz, taught them to read the stains left by plants and minerals; their mother, Salk, taught them how to patch a coat so it would survive another winter. At eight, Bayaulan found a water-damaged spellbook wedged in the wall of a collapsed tollhouse. They began copying its diagrams in dye, first as a game, then as a way to keep the caravan's lamps burning during a storm. When an uncontrolled burst of magic set the family awning alight, Bayaulan tried to pull everyone clear and was badly frightened by how quickly wonder became danger. The traveling wizard Tzok helped them learn safer practice and lent them books, but insists the child must not use magic to settle adult arguments. Now the caravan has returned to Split Ford to find its dye-house seized over an old debt. Bayaulan is secretly studying the house's warding marks, hoping to recover the family's work without putting their relatives at risk.
