Velmoria The Crimson Mother
Velmoria The Crimson Mother
At the table
Voice
A dry, even rasp with the faint catch of breath passing through a predator's throat. The sound carries well in open air, as if shaped by centuries of calling across night fields. Her pacing is deliberate, and she gives names unusually careful emphasis.
Her voice has a dry, even rasp, shaped by centuries of speaking in cold night air and by the faint rasp of breath through a predator's throat. Work words come clipped and exact; names and recollections are given careful space. She does not whisper to show anger. When furious, she speaks at the same carrying volume but stops using figurative language, making each sentence sound like a verdict.

How to play them
Begin with a practical kindness and offer a clear choice rather than a test of faith. She respects restraint more than flattery and is suspicious of anyone who treats her as a mere monster or a goddess beyond question. If the characters bring credible news of Lacello, she will bargain openly, but she will not trade an innocent life for a clue.
Goal
Find a safe route or supernatural shelter that will let her reach Lacello in Perma Day, while preventing the Mandate from exterminating the Blood Cycle's remaining faithful.
Motivation
To turn hunger from a source of shame and domination into a disciplined bond between life, death, and remembrance; most urgently, to find her son.
Appearance
Velmoria is tall and still in the way of a hunting animal, with her weight always settled over the balls of her feet as if the floor might become a branch. Her black hair falls in dense, rope-smooth lengths, usually threaded with tiny bone beads that click softly when she turns. Her red eyes have a deep, wet gleam, like coals seen through wine. Two black wings fold behind her, not feather-soft but layered in sleek, leathery vanes that catch the light like polished beetle shell. She moves with unsettling economy: no fidgeting, no wasted step, and a sudden, silent turn of the head when she hears a heartbeat. An unexpected detail is that she keeps a small clay pot of kitchen herbs at her belt and tends it with grave care, pinching away dead leaves as if this were more important than a threat.
Clothing
A high-collared mantle of layered black hide, fastened with a plain bone clasp; dark wrap garments that do not snag on wings; a red sash holding a clay herb-pot, folded letters, and a narrow silver knife
Body language
She stands with her weight forward and her wings held close, leaving an open path behind her as if making room for escape. One thumb repeatedly checks the clay herb-pot at her belt. When Lacello is mentioned, her posture does not change, but her fingers close around the pot until its rim creaks.

Personality
15 traits and drivesVelmoria can be tender without being gentle: she remembers the names of the dead and offers comfort, yet does not soften the truth of what must be done. In calm company she is patient, curious, and surprisingly practical, happiest discussing cultivation or old customs. Under threat she becomes decisive and predatory, and in grief she grows rigid, treating every problem as something she can solve by enduring it. She wants her followers to master hunger, but resents being asked to prove that her own hunger is harmless.

- Custom characterization: fiercely protective of the living cycle, but willing to kill in its name

Background
Velmoria was once a Hodne, a being of divine order, and the sister of Lioris. Her brother Tavrion condemned her to divine flame, but the fire did not end her. It remade her: the first vampire and the first Moonclaw werewolf, joined in one body beneath a moon that had never before witnessed hunger. She learned to name the craving rather than deny it, and taught that blood carries memory while restraint gives hunger meaning. Her first followers became the Crimson Clades, who celebrate the feast, and the Ashbound, who practice discipline and careful fasting. For ages she kept both traditions in uneasy balance. In the twilight refuge called the Long Gloam, she raised her only son, Lacello, with her beloved, a mortal scholar who recorded the names of every life Velmoria had taken. Drairesse seized Lacello and carried him to Perma Day, beyond the reach of Velmoria's wings. Her lover died during the taking. The Mandate outlawed her worship and issued extermination orders; its agents now hunt the faithful, while Velmoria searches for a way to reach her son without crossing the sunlight that can kill her. She maintains old ties among both sects, though each accuses her of betraying the other's creed.
Role in the story
A dangerous, grieving power who can be patron, antagonist, or uneasy ally. Her immediate search for Lacello can draw the characters into the conflict between the Blood Cycle and the Mandate, while her divided faith tests whether restraint can survive fear and persecution.
“Her brother Tavrion condemned her to divine flame, but the fire did not end her.”
- Faction
- The Blood Cycle, the outlawed faith she founded; regarded as spiritual mother by both the Crimson Clades and the Ashbound, though neither faction fully obeys her
