At the table

Voice

A dry rasp with a firm, carrying edge, shaped by salt air and the habit of calling over wind. He speaks from the chest without booming; clipped orders are easy to distinguish from the slower, more careful cadence he uses when someone is frightened.

His voice has a dry, grain-edged rasp from salt air and years of calling orders over wind and rigging. He clips instructions to their essentials, shaping certain consonants sharply so they carry across a deck. In private conversation he leaves longer pauses, as if allowing the other person room to correct the course.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical sentences while working: "Line fast. Eyes up. No heroics."
Describes direction by stars, reefs, or current instead of relying on compass points.
When asked a question he does not want to answer, gives a useful fact beside the withheld one.
Uses a dry, unexpectedly warm joke to steady frightened sailors, then immediately returns to the task.

How to play them

Begin with practical help or a clear warning instead of a grand introduction. Be direct about immediate dangers, but do not volunteer the kidnapping evidence. He responds well to people who respect local waters and take responsibility for their choices. If Ruzen's agency is discussed, his composure gives way to defensiveness, then guilt.

Goal

Protect the sacred waters and their hidden sanctuaries while finding out who ordered Ruzen's kidnapping without bringing danger to her birth family.

Motivation

Vaelis wants to keep the waters safe without turning the Outriders into a private navy, and to earn Ruzen's trust without demanding forgiveness.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Tall enough to make a cabin doorway look poorly planned, Vaelis has pale sea-glass scales with a satin sheen, roughened at the elbows and knuckles by years of rope work. Fine, dim constellation marks cross both arms; at night they seem to shift as he turns, though nobody agrees whether the pattern truly changes or the light does. He walks with a measured deck-sway even on dry ground, placing each step as if testing a moving plank. His grooming is unexpectedly exact: every scale along his jaw is polished, and he keeps his blunt, pale teeth meticulously clean, showing them in a brief, startlingly broad grin when amused. The care gives his weather-beaten working clothes an almost ceremonial contrast.

Clothing

A short, tar-darkened sailing coat over a close-woven blue-gray shirt, braced forearm guards, salt-stiff trousers, and deck boots with soft gripping soles. He wears a narrow star-reading visor on a cord, more often pushed up than used.

Body language

Keeps his shoulders square to whoever is speaking, but his eyes repeatedly check exits, rigging, and the nearest open water. When deciding whether to trust someone, he presses his tongue against one pointed tooth. At sea his balance appears effortless; ashore, he sometimes pauses as though the ground has surprised him.

Distinguishing features

Constellation-like markings across his arms appear to shift as he moves beneath a night sky.
His scales are polished with almost vain care, an unexpected habit for a working captain.
His squared teeth show prominently when he laughs, which he does in a sudden, open burst rather than a restrained smile.
He maintains a subtle rolling balance even when standing on perfectly still land.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Vaelis is watchful and decisive in danger, but patient with frightened people and young sailors. He can be openly funny among trusted crew, yet becomes guarded when conversation turns to Ruzen or the island's sanctuaries. He believes people deserve the truth, but his fear of what truth can endanger makes him conceal it from the very people he loves.

Alignment
Protective and pragmatic; keeps faith with the sacred waters but distrusts laws that serve only distant authorities.

Quirks

Names the wind by smell before he names it by direction.
Taps the ship's rail twice before stepping aboard, even when he has just left it.
Keeps his teeth polished with a smooth bit of driftwood while studying the stars.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit or hatch.
When someone lies badly, asks them to repeat the last three words as if checking a signal.

Habits

Before setting a course, checks the sky even if he has already checked it moments earlier.
When strangers ask about Ruzen, gives a true but carefully incomplete account of the rescue.
On a threatened ship, moves to the highest useful point and starts assigning jobs before anyone asks.
After a difficult decision, scrubs salt from his scales with a folded cloth until the cloth is clean.

Traits · 4

Takes command without raising his voice, then quietly checks whether the least experienced sailor understood.
Enjoys teasing trusted friends but has little patience for cruelty disguised as humor.
Values honesty and navigation as related arts: both fail when someone edits out an inconvenient landmark.
In private, rehearses difficult conversations and then postpones them when the moment arrives.

Flaws · 3

Confuses protecting people with making decisions for them.
Holds back information until a crisis leaves no time for others to judge it.
Can pursue a threat too far if it endangers the sacred waters, even when retreat would save his crew.

Fears · 3

That his secrecy will teach Ruzen that love means deciding what truths she is allowed to know.
That the kidnappers' patron will strike at the sanctuaries to silence the trail.
That the Outriders will become private enforcers for whoever can pay for their protection.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs Ruzen to hear the truth from him before she follows the evidence alone.
Wants proof of who leaked the patrol routes before the next sap harvest attempt.
Needs the crew to share responsibility for the sanctuaries' defense rather than relying on his secrecy.

Combat

HP 112 · 30 feet on foot; swims 25 feet (custom descriptive rates, use the host rules' normal movement conventions if required)

Prefers to control sightlines and footing rather than trade blows. He uses elevation, fog, and crew coordination to separate threats, shoots at anyone directing the attack, and closes with his cutlass only when an enemy reaches the deck or a crew member is in immediate danger.

Custom Generic Fantasy mechanic. Vaelis is a level 20 elite NPC. For checks using the custom d20-lite rules, roll d20 + the listed skill bonus against a GM-set target number. These mechanics are bespoke, not presented as official rules.
Starwake. Under a visible night sky, Vaelis can keep a reliable heading without charts. Clouds, false stars, and deliberate magical distortions can interfere.
Fogward. In sacred waters, Vaelis can use prepared sea-mist signals, hidden channels, and the Astryx Gale's quiet rigging to make a vessel difficult to track. This is navigation and preparation, not teleportation.
Drairesse traits are descriptive and custom: Vaelis can hold their breath longer than a human and has a swimmer's sure-footed balance on wet decks.

Actions

Starline Shot. Custom mechanic: make a ranged attack using the listed Bow skill bonus. On a hit, deal piercing damage. If Vaelis had a clear view of the target at the start of the turn, they may instead mark it; the Astryx Gale's crew can track the marked target's wake through ordinary fog until the next dawn.
Cutlass, Deck-Clear. Custom mechanic: make a melee attack using the listed Blade skill bonus. On a hit, deal slashing damage. Vaelis can push a target one step across the deck if it is no more than one size larger.
Outrider Volley. Custom mechanic: once per encounter, Vaelis orders a coordinated volley. Up to three allies who can hear him each make one attack immediately, using their own attack statistics. This is a custom command ability, not a standard action from a named ruleset.

Reactions

Hold the Rail. Custom mechanic: when an ally within arm's reach is struck, Vaelis can shift between that ally and the attacker if there is room, then impose a disadvantage on the attacker's next attack against that ally. This is a bespoke reaction and requires Vaelis to see the attack.
Break the Sightline. Custom mechanic: when a ranged attack targets Vaelis on a deck or in rigging, he can drop prone or move up to 10 feet to cover, provided a line, mast, or solid rail is within reach. He cannot use this reaction if restrained.

Services they sell

Navigate the reefs and sacred waters near Ariez Island.
Escort travelers through dangerous coastal routes when their purpose does not threaten the sanctuaries.
Arrange a discreet meeting with the Silver Tide Outriders.

Rewards they can give

A safe passage through the reef channels around Ariez Island.
A star-based route to a remote anchorage omitted from ordinary charts.
A chance to earn the Silver Tide Outriders' trust by helping protect the waters.

Equipment

  • Sea-bow (weapon)A compact recurved bow sealed against spray, with a waxed cord and a weatherproof case of broadhead arrows.
  • Deck cutlass (weapon)A plain, well-maintained cutlass balanced for fighting in cramped rigging and on a pitching deck.
  • Sky visor (navigation tool)A star-reading visor scratched with marks for several familiar seasonal skies; useful as a memory aid, not a magical chart.
  • Ruzen's trail notes (secret document)A folded bundle of concealed notes about the people who arranged Ruzen's kidnapping, wrapped in oilskin and hidden aboard the ship.

Possessions

The Astryx Gale, a lean, shallow-draft sailing vessel suited to the reefs and narrow channels around Ariez Island.
A battered star journal marked with routes, weather notes, and the names of sailors he has lost.
The hidden oilskin packet of evidence about Ruzen's kidnapping.
A small shell fragment from the pirates' ship.

Background

Vaelis was raised among Drairesse pilots who treated the night sky as a map that could be read only through patience. He learned to navigate by memorizing how constellations leaned over familiar reefs, then broke with his family’s cautious tradition when he joined the Silver Tide Outriders. Years later, he was escorting a supply boat near Ariez Island when pirates seized Ruzen, the young daughter of Aelthyndra and Vel'Thir. Vaelis pursued them through a squall, boarded their vessel in darkness, and brought Ruzen back alive. He adopted her and made the Astryx Gale her home. During the rescue, he found evidence that the kidnapping had been arranged by someone who knew her birth family’s movements. He hid his notes, believing that an investigation could expose the island’s sanctuaries. Ruzen found the notes and has not confronted him. Now illegal Worldtree sap harvesters are testing the sacred waters, and Vaelis has made their ships vanish into fog by misdirection, concealed channels, and a crew that knows every reef. He is also trying to keep the Outriders supplied while a former route-partner, Tarek, quietly sells fragments of their patrol schedule.

Role in the story

A formidable maritime ally and guardian whose protection of Ruzen has become entangled with a damaging secret. The party may need his expertise against illegal sap harvesters, help Ruzen confront the truth, or decide whether his secrecy has put the sanctuaries at greater risk.

From their background
Faction
Captain of the Silver Tide Outriders, an independent seafaring company sworn to protect the sacred waters near Ariez Island.

Known connections

Ruzen, his adopted daughter and the person whose safety has shaped his most consequential choices. She has found his hidden notes and is waiting for him to tell the truth.
Aelthyndra and Vel'Thir, Ruzen's birth parents. Vaelis respects their bond with her but fears that revealing the kidnapping evidence will lead danger back to their sanctuaries.
Tarek, a former route-partner whose recent leaks may be greed, coercion, or an attempt to protect someone. Vaelis has not decided which.
Kantu, the Astryx Gale's boatswain, who argues that the crew deserves to know when Vaelis is concealing a threat.
The keepers of Ariez Island's hidden sanctuaries, whose trust Vaelis protects even when they disagree about how much danger to tolerate.
