At the table

Voice

Mael's voice is clear and grounded, with a little roughness from calling across streets and speaking over the Thirsty Boar's kitchen noise. He speaks at an even pace when reassuring someone, but projects short, unmistakable commands when a crowd turns dangerous.

His voice has a clear, chest-supported tone shaped by calling warnings across a busy street and speaking over tavern clatter. He clips the ends of urgent instructions, but takes his time with personal questions. His words are plain and warm, with the occasional kitchen metaphor slipping in before he notices.

Speech patterns

Starts with a direct question, then gives people time to answer without filling the silence.
Uses plain, practical comparisons drawn from tavern work: a problem can be 'a spilled keg' or 'a table with one short leg.'
When he must refuse someone, he explains the reason and offers the safest alternative he can.
Calls familiar townsfolk by their names rather than their titles, even while on duty.

How to play them

Approach him with a specific concern and he will listen carefully, especially if someone is at risk. He is warm with ordinary residents but will ask pointed follow-up questions when stories do not fit. If the characters show restraint and honesty, he may share patrol observations. If they threaten civilians or interfere with a lawful arrest, he becomes firm and places himself between them and the threatened person.

Goal

Find who is exploiting the watch's patrol schedule, keep Oakhaven's people safe, and decide whether his future belongs in the watch or at his parents' tavern.

Motivation

Mael believes the watch should make people feel safer, not smaller. He wants to be worthy of the trust his neighbors place in the oak crest.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A young man with a clean-shaven face and an open, kind smile that arrives readily, even when he is tired. His short brown hair is usually pressed flat beneath his helmet, then springs up in uneven tufts when he takes it off. His brown eyes have a steady, attentive warmth. His jaw is broad and slightly crooked, and when he laughs or eats he shows a small gap between his front teeth. He smells faintly of oak smoke, soap, and the yeasty warmth of the Thirsty Boar; he knows about the smoke, but insists the rest is just his uniform. He moves with the measured, heel-first tread of someone trained to patrol cobbled lanes, yet he has a habit of leaning toward people when they speak, as if making room for their words.

Clothing

A town-guard uniform of dark green wool, a practical leather belt, and a cream tunic draped over it. A large oak-tree crest is stitched in brown and green at the center of his chest. The tunic is carefully mended at one cuff, and he keeps his helmet polished but not ornamental.

Body language

He stands squarely but never blocks a doorway unless he has to. His friendly smile creases one side first. When listening, he angles his head toward the speaker and keeps both hands visible. Before a confrontation, his shoulders settle and his feet find a balanced, planted stance.

Distinguishing features

A persistent scent of oak smoke from the Thirsty Boar's kitchen clings to his hair and uniform.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Mael is sincerely kind but not soft-headed: he gives people the benefit of the doubt, then watches closely to see what they do with it. On an ordinary shift he is patient, approachable, and quick to smile. When someone is bullied, he becomes blunt and physically decisive. After a bad call, he grows unusually self-critical and tries to repair the harm through work rather than admitting how deeply it affected him.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Quirks

Taps the edge of a table twice before sitting, a habit from checking tavern benches for wobble.
Counts doorways aloud under his breath when walking an unfamiliar street.
Keeps the straightest piece of kindling he finds each week and gives it to his father for the tavern stove.
Practices polite greetings to difficult suspects in the reflection of his shield before a shift.
When offered a drink, he first smells it, then grins and says the kitchen taught him not to trust a cup he did not see poured.

Habits

Checks doorways and window latches as naturally as other people check the weather.
When a crowd gets tense, he gives people practical tasks, such as moving a cart or fetching water, to redirect their attention.
After a difficult shift, he goes to the Thirsty Boar kitchen and helps with washing up rather than talking about what happened.
When he is embarrassed, he touches the oak crest on his chest as if checking that it is still there.

Traits · 4

He remembers small details about people and asks after them later.
He can be cheerfully sociable in the tavern, then sharply focused the moment a real danger appears.
He respects rules as useful promises but challenges them when they protect the powerful at someone else's expense.
He prefers to de-escalate, yet once he commits to protecting someone he is difficult to move.

Flaws · 3

He takes responsibility for trouble he could not reasonably have prevented.
His instinct to protect people can make him rush into danger without calling for support.
He gives familiar people more chances than their behavior has earned.

Fears · 3

That his trust in a friend has put ordinary townsfolk in danger.
That years of enforcing rules will make him stop asking whether those rules are fair.
That his parents will be left alone if he is badly hurt on duty.

Wants and needs · 3

He wants to uncover the source of the burglaries without sacrificing an innocent person to protect his reputation.
He needs to tell someone he trusts about the schedule he shared with Toma.
He wants his parents to understand that joining the watch was his choice, not a rejection of the tavern.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 36 · 30 feet

He puts himself between danger and bystanders, uses his shield to control space, and calls for help before a fight becomes a rout. He favors disarming, pinning, or driving an opponent away over finishing a wounded foe. If outnumbered, he backs toward a doorway or narrow lane where fewer enemies can reach him at once.

Background

Mael grew up carrying stew pots and splitting kindling at his parents' tavern, the Thirsty Boar in Oakhaven. He learned early that a room can turn dangerous before anyone throws a punch: a chair scraped back, a laugh that came too late, a hand disappearing beneath a coat. At sixteen, during a winter kitchen fire, he ignored an order to stay outside and went back in for a trapped stable boy. The boy lived; Mael was reprimanded for disobeying and spent months wondering whether courage and recklessness were the same thing. He joined the town watch to protect the ordinary places where people feel safe, not because he enjoys authority. A few years into service, he helped break up a brawl that began after a patrolman accused a traveling charcoal burner of theft. Mael's testimony cleared the innocent man but angered a senior watch sergeant, who has since made sure Mael gets the least convenient shifts. His parents are proud and worried in equal measure. His mother, Nessa, keeps a bowl of hot broth aside for him; his father, Daro, wants him to leave the watch before it hardens him. Mael is currently trying to prove that someone has been using the watch's night patrol schedule to time burglaries, while concealing that he once shared a copy of the schedule with a trusted friend who may have betrayed him.

Role in the story

A principled local guard, potential ally, and living link between Oakhaven's civic life and its tavern community. His investigation can reveal the party's next lead, but his concealed mistake may complicate their trust in him.
