Tuck
Tuck
At the table
Voice
Tuck's voice has a dry, lightly rasping edge from years around soot and hot lamp oil. He speaks with the quick, matter-of-fact rhythm of someone used to calling instructions from halfway up a ladder. When nervous, he runs words together; when he is certain Ulla is fine, each sentence lands like a bolt tightened one turn too far.
He speaks in practical, clipped explanations, filling pauses with details about tools, oil, and fittings. When discussing Ulla, his words turn brisk and reassuring, as if he can make the fear go away by describing a sensible plan.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach him through a shared practical task or by asking about a lamp. He is friendly but will dismiss claims that Ulla is in danger unless offered concrete evidence. If shown proof, he becomes quiet, asks precise questions, and tries to help even if he is plainly afraid.
Goal
Keep his workshop open, and find a way to make Ulla come home long enough to explain what she is doing.
Motivation
Tuck wants to believe that being useful and keeping the lights on can keep his family safe.
Appearance
Tuck has a compact, work-hardened frame and a habit of leaning his weight onto the balls of his feet, as if waiting for a ladder to wobble. His jaw is broad and slightly forward; when he laughs, his square front teeth show in a lopsided row, and he chews the inside of one cheek while thinking. He moves in quick, economical turns, always glancing up at hooks, eaves, and lamp brackets. An unexpected detail for a lamp repairer: he keeps a tiny paper puppet tucked in his cap and makes it perform for nervous children while he works.
Clothing
A patched russet work coat with a high collar, a soot-stained apron, thick trousers, and boots with replacement soles. A battered cap keeps his hair clear of oil, and his pockets clink softly with tools.
Body language
He waits pitched slightly forward, heels lifted and fingers busy with a screw, wick, or the edge of his apron. When he is frightened, his jaw sets and he angles himself between the nearest child and whatever seems dangerous.

Personality
11 traits and drivesTuck is warm and quick to lend a hand, but his optimism becomes an iron refusal when anyone suggests Ulla is in danger. With customers he is patient and joking; under pressure he narrows the world to the next broken thing he can fix. He is brave when protecting someone nearby, yet avoids asking for help with his own troubles.

Background
Tuck grew up with Ulla Pritch in a cramped row of rooms above a cooper's yard, where a shared lamp was a household treasure. When their mother fell ill, he learned to mend wicks and cracked glass from a patient street lamplighter, while Ulla took whatever work paid fastest. Years ago, a fire swept through a riverside lodging house. Tuck was inside repairing a stairwell lamp when Ulla dragged him out through a smoke-choked window. He came away convinced that she could always find a way through danger; she came away furious that he had nearly died waiting for her to return. Now Tuck repairs lamps across the district and insists Ulla is merely busy, even when her absences and evasions make that explanation hard to defend. He has debts for replacement glass, a landlord threatening to clear his workshop, and a growing stack of unsent notes to his sister.
Role in the story
Ulla Pritch's younger brother and a grounded link to her ordinary life. Tuck can provide useful neighborhood knowledge, repairs, and a personal reason for the characters to take Ulla's safety seriously.
