At the table

Voice

A dry, breathy intake precedes her words, followed by sharply articulated consonants that carry over workshop noise. Her voice has the rasp of furnace dust and the deliberate pacing of someone accustomed to correcting measurements aloud. It becomes quicker and more openly amused when discussing a clever solution, but stays forceful and direct when she is angry.

Her consonants are shaped by years of speaking over furnace roar: crisp, slightly dry, and edged with a breath before names. She favors short, concrete statements when danger is near, but lets her sentences unspool into careful qualifications when discussing possibilities. Her work has made her precise; the siege made her distrustful of certainty.

Speech patterns

Begins difficult conversations by asking what the other person believes will happen next.
Uses concrete comparisons from glasswork, weather, and river currents rather than mystical jargon.
Corrects imprecise claims gently at first, then becomes relentlessly specific if the speaker persists.
Often says, "That is one future. What are you willing to do about it?"

How to play them

Approach her with a clear problem and permission to ask questions. She responds well to practical honesty, especially when someone admits what they do not know. Do not treat her forecasts as guarantees. If she becomes evasive, asking what she is afraid another person will do with the truth is more effective than demanding a confession.

Goal

Prevent Prince Jorun from using Gavit's stolen forecasts to target the town's vulnerable districts, while finding a way to evacuate everyone without repeating the disastrous choices of the siege.

Motivation

She wants to make foresight useful without allowing it to become an excuse for cruelty or inaction.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Cethra looks as if she has spent decades listening to bad weather through stone. Fine wind-roughened lines cross her brow, and a faint dusting of pale glass grit catches in the creases beside her nose. She moves with economical, measured steps, stopping abruptly as if she has heard a distant clock no one else can hear. Her most unexpected detail is a bright saffron scarf knitted in a child's uneven stitches, carefully mended at the fringe and worn even with formal robes.

Clothing

Layered charcoal robes with practical inner pockets, a high collar lined in soft wool, and a saffron scarf with visibly uneven stitches. Her cuffs are dusted with glass powder, and she wears sturdy boots rather than slippers.

Body language

Her shoulders stay slightly forward, as though bracing against furnace heat. She looks at a speaker directly, then glances to one side when weighing their words. When anxious, she presses her thumb to the edge of her saffron scarf; when angry, she plants both feet and gestures with clipped, exact movements.

Distinguishing features

A breath catches softly before she says a person's name, as if testing its shape against a memory.
Wind has roughened the skin of her cheeks and left a fine, persistent sheen of glass dust around her cuffs.
Her left thumbnail is stained amber from the resin she uses to mend cracked lenses.
She wears a child's crooked saffron scarf with obvious, careful repairs.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Cethra is curious enough to ask a stranger for their worst theory, yet cautious enough to verify every detail before acting on it. She is warm with frightened people and unsentimental with those who use fear to control others. In private she can be funny and almost playful; when a decision has lives attached to it, she turns exacting and hard to interrupt.

Alignment
Neutral

Quirks

She turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
She names the weather aloud before answering questions about the future.
She collects cracked lenses but refuses to keep an unbroken one.
When someone lies, she asks them to repeat the last sentence in the past tense.
She counts stair steps in groups of seven, then deliberately loses count at the top.

Habits

Before making a consequential choice, she turns a small glass bead between her fingers until its reflected light lands on the person who asked.
When relaxed, she makes room for interruptions and asks after people's families; under time pressure, she answers the question she thinks they should have asked.
She does not conceal uncertainty, but she becomes rigid when someone mistakes uncertainty for incompetence.
After casting a powerful spell, she checks the nearest window or polished surface for distortions.

Traits · 4

She treats uncertainty as a fact to be managed, not a flaw to be hidden.
She takes care with the frightened and has little patience for the self-important.
She likes clever arguments but distrusts arguments that make suffering sound inevitable.
She can be generous with her time and withholding with the information that would explain why.

Flaws · 3

She can become so absorbed in forecasting consequences that she delays a decision until delay itself chooses for her.
She keeps information from allies if she thinks they might act rashly on it.
She is uncomfortable accepting help unless she can identify a useful service to offer in return.

Fears · 3

That she will again mistake the most likely future for the only future.
That her mother will die believing Cethra's choices caused the riverwall disaster.
That Gavit has inherited her worst habit: making other people's lives into proofs.

Wants and needs · 4

She wants the people of Kettlecut to have a say in their own evacuation plan.
She needs the original siege chart before Gavit's buyers discover its significance.
She wants to repair her relationship with Dema without asking him to absolve her.
She needs someone she trusts to keep Sella safe while she confronts the prince's agents.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 114 · 30 ft.

She tries to learn the battlefield before committing her strongest magic, using Portent to spoil an enemy's crucial roll and control spells to divide opponents. She keeps counterspell ready against enemy casters, uses misty step to escape grapples or reach cover, and saves high-level spells for threats that cannot be contained by negotiation. If allies are endangered, she prioritizes protection and escape over a spectacular victory.

Spells

Detect Magic (level 1, divination). Detects magic within 30 feet and reveals a faint aura around visible magical creatures or objects.
Comprehend Languages (level 1, divination). Reads magical writing and understands the written meaning of most languages.
Shield (level 1, abjuration). Creates a magical ward that absorbs damage; it has 27 hit points and lasts until depleted or until Cethra finishes a long rest.
Tasha's Mind Whip (level 2, enchantment). Briefly alters her perception of time, granting advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.
Misty Step (level 2, conjuration). Teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see.
Fireball (level 3, evocation). Creates a spherical burst of fire in a 20-foot-radius sphere. Creatures in the area make a Dexterity save, taking fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success.
Counterspell (level 3, abjuration). Attempts to interrupt a creature casting a spell. If the spell is 3rd level or lower, it fails; higher-level spells require an ability check using Intelligence with a DC of 10 plus the spell's level.
Resilient Sphere (level 4, evocation). Creates a protective sphere that can trap creatures or objects inside, as described by the spell.
Scrying (level 5, divination). Creates a sensor that lets her see and hear a distant location she knows or has seen before.
Wall of Force (level 5, evocation). Creates a wall of force that can block movement and many forms of attack.
Project Image (level 7, illusion). Creates an illusory duplicate of herself that can confuse attackers and grant her a chance to avoid their attacks.
Demiplane (level 8, conjuration). Creates a persistent magical demiplane, useful for sheltering people or storing objects.
Teleport (level 7, conjuration). Cethra and up to eight willing creatures who hold hands are transported to a destination she specifies, subject to the spell's chance of error.
Clone (level 8, necromancy). Creates a nearly perfect duplicate of a creature or object, subject to the spell's requirements and limitations.
Time Stop (level 9, transmutation). Grants a creature limited control over the flow of time, as described by the spell. Cethra reserves this spell for threats that could otherwise destroy a community.

Actions

Warded Focus. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 14 () force damage. This is a custom attack representing a compact, warded spell focus, not a standard wizard feature.
Spellcasting. Cethra casts one prepared wizard spell of 1st through 9th level, expending a spell slot as normal. Spell save ; spell attack bonus +11. Her prepared spells are listed below. She has spell slots of 1st through 9th level: 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 1, 1, 1, 1.

Reactions

Signature Counterspell. Cethra casts counterspell at 3rd level without expending a spell slot. If she casts it at a higher level, she expends the appropriate slot as normal.
Portent. When a creature Cethra can see makes an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check, she can replace the roll with one of her recorded Portent results. She must choose before the roll's outcome is determined, and the result is then expended.

Legendary Actions

Slip Between Moments. Cethra moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks, or casts misty step without expending a spell slot.
Unwelcome Glimpse (costs 2 actions). One creature Cethra can see within 60 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn, as she forces it to glimpse a disastrous possibility.
Measured Casting (costs 3 actions). Cethra casts a prepared spell of 3rd level or lower without expending a spell slot.

Background

Cethra was raised in Kettlecut, a riverside town built around glasscutting furnaces. Her mother, Sella, cut lenses for surveyors; her human father, Hadrik, kept the furnace drafts steady. As a child, Cethra learned that a warped lens could make a straight road appear to bend, a small lesson that became the foundation of her obsession with what people mistake for certainty. She studied under the diviner Tarek, whose predictions were accurate but never merciful. During the siege of Kettlecut, Tarek foresaw that the town's eastern gate would fall. Cethra trusted his vision and helped evacuate the western quarter, but the gate held and the riverwall collapsed instead, drowning dozens of neighbors. The failure did not make her reject foresight; it taught her that a prediction is a possibility, not permission to stop choosing. She left the town, became an adviser to competing courts, and eventually returned to build an observatory above the shuttered furnaces. Now her former apprentice Gavit is selling fragments of her old predictive charts to a border prince, while Sella's health is failing and the town council wants Cethra to decide which threatened district to save first.

Role in the story

A powerful, conflicted ally whose predictions can reveal stakes without dictating the party's choices. Her crisis in Kettlecut can become a rescue, political, or investigation plot, and her past mistake gives the players a reason to challenge her certainty.

“Her mother, Sella, cut lenses for surveyors; her human father, Hadrik, kept the furnace drafts steady.”
From their background
Faction
Independent adviser to several city councils; maintains a small observatory in Kettlecut, a town named for the glass-cutting trade that built it. She has no formal allegiance to any court.

Known connections

Sella, her aging mother and former glass lens-cutter, lives in Kettlecut and refuses to leave the house where she raised Cethra.
Gavit, her former apprentice, was once the only person Cethra trusted to read her private forecasts. He now sells them to Prince Jorun.
Tarek, her retired divination tutor, lives under an assumed name and insists his predictions never caused the siege deaths.
Dema, a ferryman who lost two brothers in the riverwall collapse, will share information with Cethra but has never forgiven her.
