At the table

Voice

A resonant, clear voice with a faint dry rasp from calling over crowds and breathing performance-room dust. Her words have a practiced forward placement that carries without shouting. When tired, the rasp catches on hard consonants; when amused, a brief breathy chuckle escapes before she can suppress it.

Her Basic is clear and economical, shaped by years of calling prices over market noise and projecting rhythmically across a performance room. Words land with crisp consonants and the quick pace of someone used to being interrupted. In Ryl, she is warmer and more fluid. She does not sing her lines; when angry, she becomes more precise, naming exactly what she believes someone intends to do.

Speech patterns

Prices are delivered with dry, exact humor; she does not pretend a bad bargain is good.
Uses dance and jewelry terms as metaphors for timing, balance, and deception.
Asks practical questions before personal ones, especially when assessing a stranger's risk.
Calls a threat by its likely consequence rather than dressing it up: 'That gets people hurt.'

How to play them

Start with a blunt assessment of the visitor's intentions, then offer useful information or a fair trade if they seem safe. She responds best to practical help that does not demand gratitude or immediate trust. Do not treat her restraint as consent or assume that a bargain with Sheska represents Yulaani's wishes.

Goal

Get free of the contract and find out what happened to Ssaeli without letting Sheska use anyone else as leverage.

Motivation

Freedom matters, but not at the price of becoming someone who abandons the vulnerable whenever the door opens.

Appearance

Yulaani lounges on a low stool behind her jewelry stall, legs stretched along its counter and bare soles turned toward the customer as if waiting is the day's most demanding performance. The pose looks indolent until she shifts: then her compact, conditioned body gathers forward with startling balance and dancer's precision. Sapphire-blue skin has a satin sheen across her cheekbones and shoulders, but the backs of her hands are matte and faintly rough from polishing metal and handling grit. Her amber eyes are flecked with copper and seem to weigh every exit. Deep indigo lekku, black-violet at the roots, fall over her shoulders; one is threaded with tiny brass rings that click softly when she turns. A heavy shackle circles her left ankle, its short chain disappearing behind the stall. She wears translucent layered sapphire performance cloth over an opaque fitted underwrap, secured with brass clasps, plus an ornate collar, armbands, stacked bangles, thigh ornaments, and calf bands. The result is theatrical and carefully arranged, but the shackle makes the arrangement unmistakably coercive.

Clothing

Layered translucent sapphire performance fabrics worn over an opaque fitted dancer's underwrap, fastened with brass clasps. She has ornate armbands, a carved collar, stacked bangles, thigh ornaments, calf bands, and a heavy shackle on her left ankle. Her clothes are arranged to look elegant while remaining practical enough for work.

Body language

At rest, she slouches with one shoulder lower and her feet propped on the stall, projecting bored ease. When engaged, she leans forward and plants her feet as if a dance is about to begin. She rarely turns her back to a customer, and her lekku angle subtly toward sudden sounds.

Amber eyes with fine copper flecks that catch lantern light.
Deep indigo lekku with black-violet roots; tiny brass rings on one lekku make a faint click when she turns.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Yulaani's deliberate boredom hides a quick, compassionate attention to other people's discomfort. With customers she is wry and businesslike; with children she becomes unexpectedly patient and playful. When frightened, she grows practical rather than visibly panicked, but afterward she can be stubborn and ashamed of needing help. She wants to trust people and tests them as if trust were a stone she must tap before buying.

Alignment
Pragmatic and compassionate, with little patience for anyone who treats ownership as morality.

Quirks

Turns her thumb-ring exactly once before answering a question she considers dangerous.
Gives each stall charm a tiny touch as she counts the display, even if one has been removed.
Practices dance steps only with her heels, making almost no sound on the floor.
When a customer lies about a price, she studies the clasp instead of their face.
Calls the ankle chain 'the world's worst bracelet' when she is trying to keep a child from worrying.

Habits

Keeps her attention on reflections in polished metal when someone approaches from behind.
Tracks a customer's gaze to learn whether they are looking at jewelry, exits, or her chain.
When nervous, counts the stall's hanging charms by touch without looking.
During a quiet spell, practices tiny footwork patterns beneath the counter.

Traits · 4

Witty and commercially sharp, but uncomfortable when kindness is treated as a debt.
Calm under immediate pressure, yet prone to revisiting every choice afterward.
Protective of people with less power, while resenting the assumption that she must always be the brave one.
Presents herself as bored to discourage intrusive attention, but notices nearly everything.

Flaws · 3

Takes personal responsibility for strangers who are in danger, even when it puts her escape at risk.
Distrusts offers of help until they have been tested, sometimes wasting precious time.
Can mistake stillness for control and wait too long to act.

Fears · 3

Being moved so far from the port that she can no longer search for Ssaeli.
A second chance to escape costing someone else their safety.
Being treated as a commodity even after the shackle is removed.

Wants and needs · 4

A safe way to remove the shackle.
Reliable news of her aunt, Ssaeli.
A plan that does not make the market runner or repairer's child targets.
To be asked what she wants, rather than told what would be best for her.

Combat

HP 18 · Custom reference: 9 meters per round unshackled; approximately 4 meters per round while the short ankle chain is fixed to the stall. Replace with the movement rules of the table's chosen edition.

Avoids a fair fight. She uses the stall, hanging jewelry, and crowd to obstruct pursuit, then tries to reach cover or an exit. If trapped, she uses a quick jab or a stolen holdout blaster to make space, aiming to escape rather than kill. The ankle shackle limits her stride and makes a chase dangerous.

A few saved beads concealed in the hollow stall counter.
A small cloth wrap for polishing jewelry.

Background

Yulaani learned dance in a cramped entertainment house on a busy port moon, where her aunt taught her that a crowd's attention could be directed as surely as a spotlight. When the house's proprietor sold her debt contract to a traveling dealer, Yulaani was taken to a market stall and made to sell jewelry as well as perform demonstrations for passing customers. Her present owner, the shrewd dealer Sheska, calls the arrangement temporary and keeps the ankle chain short enough to make the word ring false. Years ago, during a stampede caused by a dockside fire, Yulaani could have escaped through a service passage. Instead, she went back for a child trapped under a fallen display. The child survived; Yulaani was recaptured. That choice left her with a stubborn conviction that survival means little if it costs her the person she wants to be. She now quietly maps patrol changes and saves scraps of wire, while trying to locate her aunt, who vanished after the sale. Her current problem is that Sheska has noticed the missing wire and plans to move the stall before the next market day.

Role in the story

A vivid market contact whose apparent indolence conceals a careful escape plan. The party can help her, complicate her plan, or learn that the market's routine exploitation is part of a wider local problem. She remains an agent of her own choices, not simply a captive to be rescued.

“Her present owner, the shrewd dealer Sheska, calls the arrangement temporary and keeps the ankle chain short enough to make the word ring false.”
