Sethric Vale
Sethric Vale
At the table
Voice
Low, rough, smoky, and surprisingly controlled. He sounds most dangerous when he is almost whispering.
His voice is a low, rough baritone with a wet rasp at the edges, as if every sentence has passed through smoke and pepper. He speaks slowly when naming a price and rapidly when describing food. He rarely raises his volume because his quietest threats are the ones people remember.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Sethric begins by making the players uncomfortable, usually by standing too close, examining what they eat, and quoting an inflated service price. He respects directness, competent bargaining, and anyone who refuses to laugh at his size. He becomes more cooperative if offered a meaningful meal, a clear contract, or information about his sister. Sincere pity provokes immediate hostility. If the players treat him as a person without excusing his cruelty, he may become a dangerous but dependable ally.
Goal
To earn enough money to buy and restore the abandoned Temple of the Balanced Grip, then prove to everyone who mocked him that he can own the place where he was once rejected.
Motivation
Sethric wants security, recognition, and control over the conditions that once made him feel helpless. He tells himself that money and food will protect him from loneliness, but what he actually craves is proof that people will stay after seeing the worst parts of him.
Appearance
Sethric Vale is an enormous man whose body seems built for occupying doorways, benches, and the attention of everyone nearby. His weight is carried in a broad, heavy mass rather than hanging loosely, giving him the unsettling balance of a siege engine that learned to walk. His flaming red hair grows in dense, wiry curls, usually tied at the back with a strip of stained green cloth. His beard is trimmed short around the mouth but left thick beneath the jaw, where crumbs and spice dust often catch in the copper-colored hairs. He moves with surprising quiet, placing each foot carefully and rolling his shoulders before every change of direction. He smells of rendered fat, pepper, leather, old smoke, and the sharp vinegar he uses to clean his hands. He knows exactly how strong the smell is and weaponizes it when intimidating people. His unexpected contradiction is his delicate hands, with neatly filed nails and the graceful finger control of a jeweler. The first impression he leaves is not simply that he is large, but that the room has become smaller around him.
Clothing
A sleeveless charcoal monk's vest reinforced with hidden leather panels, loose rust-red trousers tied with a black cord, soft split-toe boots, a stained green headcloth, and a broad belt fitted with hooks for utensils, ration pouches, and contracts
Body language
Sethric leans forward when threatening someone, making his bulk feel like it is already falling onto them. When calm, he rests one hand over his stomach and the other against a wall, as if unconsciously bracing the world. He rarely clenches his fists. Instead, his fingers flex slowly, testing imaginary grips. When ashamed, he becomes extremely still and avoids looking at anyone's mouth.

Distinguishing features
Personality
19 traits and drivesSethric is foul-tempered, theatrical, and constantly hungry, but his anger is more deliberate than spontaneous. He is generous to strangers who show competence and miserly toward family members who know his weaknesses. In a fight he is patient, focused, and almost serene, while in a tavern he is petty about seating, portions, and perceived slights. He can be unexpectedly protective of servants, children, and anyone being mocked for their body, yet he often protects them by frightening them into silence. His greatest internal tension is that he despises being reduced to his appetite while using that appetite as an excuse to reduce everyone else to prey, payment, or inconvenience.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 47 · 40 feetSethric closes distance immediately, targets the strongest-looking opponent, and uses Crushing Clinch to control the battlefield. He drags grappled enemies into walls, furniture, fire pits, or the reach of allies. He spends ki sparingly unless a dangerous enemy can be stunned. Against groups, he uses his bulk to block narrow passages. If reduced below half hit points, his temper overrides his discipline and he begins using Rib-Cage Press repeatedly, even when retreat would be wiser.

Background
Sethric was born above a cooper's shop in the river district of Kettig, where his mother repaired barrels and his father hauled grain. As a child he was mocked for his size by apprentices, older boys, and eventually by the soldiers who used his nickname, The Fat Keg, whenever they wanted a laugh. He learned to endure insults silently, then discovered that wrestling made people stop laughing. A retired temple wrestler named Mbatik took him in and taught him breath control, leverage, and the difference between pain and humiliation. Sethric excelled at the physical lessons but never accepted the spiritual ones. When Mbatik died during a famine, Sethric sold his temple robes, joined a caravan guard company, and began charging extra for food. His appetite grew alongside his reputation. Years later, after a siege left him trapped in a collapsed granary for three days with dead soldiers and no provisions, he emerged alive and changed. He refuses to explain how he survived. Now he sells his fists to merchants, nobles, and criminals, demanding a fee large enough to fund his constant eating. His current problems include a debt to a butcher's guild, a former employer who wants him dead, and a younger sister who has stopped accepting his money because she believes it is blood-soaked. He is also being quietly followed by the son of Mbatik, who wants the stolen temple robes returned.
Role in the story
A volatile rival, reluctant guide, or temporary ally whose appetite and brutality create immediate friction. Sethric can serve as a living moral challenge: the players may uncover the truth behind the cannibal rumor, confront him about his cruelty, or help him reclaim the temple he believes will make him whole. He is most effective as an NPC who can be hired, betrayed, redeemed partially, or fought without ever feeling like a disposable thug.
