Leonis Bounder
Leonis Bounder
At the table
Voice
A dry, breathy voice shaped by sprinting deliveries and calling over market noise. He draws a sharp breath through his nose before speaking; hurried words arrive in clipped bursts, while honest answers come out slower and without his usual jokes.
His voice has a dry, breathy edge from years of sprinting while calling delivery instructions across crowded streets. He takes a brief, sharp intake through his nose before speaking, as if checking the air for danger. His words come out quick and neatly packed when he is evading a question, but his pace turns measured and plain when he discusses the families he intends to help.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Leonis first offers a useful fact or small favor to learn whether the characters are safe to trust. If they seem compassionate, he asks for help getting the valuables to their rightful owners. If they appear aligned with the counting house, he misdirects them and looks for a clean escape. He is more likely to trust actions that protect Nima than promises made for his benefit.
Goal
Return the stolen valuables to the families they were taken from and clear Nima's name before the counting house identifies her as his accomplice.
Motivation
He wants to repair the harm done by the counting house without becoming another person who decides what others should risk.
Appearance
Leonis is a long-eared harengon with warm tawny fur, a pale cream muzzle, and a narrow white blaze that runs from his forehead between his eyes. His ears are exceptionally expressive: one usually angles forward to catch conversation while the other flicks toward exits. He smells sharply of crushed mint, damp wool, and the faint mineral tang of old money; he knows about the mint and uses it to mask the rest. He moves in quick, soundless starts and stops, folding himself into spaces that seem too small, then rising with an abrupt, spring-loaded grace. An unexpected detail for a practiced thief: he carries a tiny, carefully tended pot of thyme tucked inside his satchel, wrapped in felt so its leaves will not bruise.
Clothing
A moss-brown short cloak over a fitted, weatherproof vest, soft-soled boots, and fingerless gloves with reinforced palms. His clothes have hidden inner pockets but no obvious thief's uniform. The small thyme pot is swaddled in felt inside his satchel.
Body language
He stands slightly sideways, ready to spring, and keeps his satchel between himself and unfamiliar hands. His ears betray attention before his face does. When he is tempted to lie, he rubs his thumb over the seam of his left glove; when he chooses honesty, he plants both feet and holds still.

Personality
12 traits and drivesLeonis is quick to joke and quicker to notice when someone is uncomfortable, yet he distrusts kindness that asks nothing in return. Around strangers he is nimble with excuses and evasions; with the few people he trusts, he is blunt to the point of rudeness. He wants to be brave enough to stand his ground, but when danger becomes immediate his first instinct is always to run, and he hates himself for that even as it keeps him alive.

AC 16 · HP 38 · 30 feetLeonis avoids a stand-up fight. He uses cover, Cunning Action, and Rabbit Hop to break line of sight, then seeks advantage for Sneak Attack. He targets weapons, escape routes, or isolated enemies rather than fighting to the death. He will not use the gems and cions as a distraction unless doing so prevents someone from being hurt.

Background
Leonis grew up carrying parcels between the market terraces of a river city, learning which shopkeepers watched their doors and which guards watched one another. He became a courier for the tabaxi magistrate's counting house, where his speed and immaculate manners made him easy to trust. That trust ended when he discovered that his employer was diverting seized valuables from families accused of smuggling. Leonis copied evidence, then fled with a bag of gems and cions meant to disappear into a private cache. During his escape, an injured tabaxi guard named Nima let him slip through a service gate, risking her post rather than obeying an order to shoot. Now two tabaxi guards are pursuing him through the market quarter: Nima, who wants him alive and the evidence intact, and Draz, who wants the stolen valuables back before their employer learns what Leonis knows. Leonis intends to get the valuables to the dispossessed families, but the bag contains more than he can safely carry, and every day he delays puts Nima in greater danger.
Role in the story
A fugitive with a stolen satchel whose contents connect the party to a quiet corruption scandal. He can become a fast-moving ally, a difficult rescue, or a test of whether the characters will protect someone who has done wrong for partly good reasons.
