Huzsa
Huzsa
At the table
Voice
A dry, grainy rasp with breathy edges, as if each word has crossed a stretch of cold water. She projects easily over wind and reeds, and her laugh ends in a sharp click of jaw.
Her voice has a dry rasp shaped by pipe smoke and years of calling across water. She clips directions into short, workmanlike phrases, but tells flood stories in long loops, circling back to details she thinks listeners missed.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Huzsa is direct with people who come prepared and guarded with anyone who tries to hurry her. Offer useful information, help with the ferry, or concern for the settlement and she will share what she knows. Press her to enforce an order without question and she will ask who gets hurt if she obeys.
Goal
Find what is driving marsh creatures toward Silt Ford before the council turns the settlement into a fortress and makes the panic permanent.
Motivation
Keep Silt Ford safe without letting fear turn its people into the sort of authority that once trapped her brother.
Appearance
Huzsa stands planted in black marsh mud, her broad shell ridged like weathered river stone beneath a broad-rimmed straw hat. Her pebbled green-brown skin shines with damp, and her blunt, snapping jaw works around a clay pipe whose smoke smells of pepperleaf, wet rope, and old gun oil. She aims with unnerving stillness, then pivots by setting one heavy foot at a time. When she laughs, the squared edges of her beaklike mouth show a tiny, carefully carved wooden tooth wedged between her own. The settlement behind her glows through reed haze, its lamps trembling gold on the water.
Clothing
A broad-rimmed straw hat patched with blue sailcloth, oilskin duster cut short to clear her shell, faded marsh-green trousers, and a cartridge belt worn low. A hatchet rides at her hip.
Body language
She braces her shell against a tree, levee, or doorway when aiming. When listening, she taps the pipe stem against one tooth, then stops the instant someone mentions the flood.

Background
Huzsa grew up ferrying medicine and mail between the scattered houses at Silt Ford. She became a warden after a spring flood trapped her younger brother, Tamas, and the settlement's council ordered the ferry kept running instead of sending help. Huzsa abandoned her post to reach him; she saved him, but the delay cost a neighboring family their home. Since then she has treated rules as tools, not sacred things, and keeps a close watch on whoever writes them. Her old partner, Sefra, now runs the ferry and still resents how Huzsa left her to answer for the abandoned crossing. Lately, something has been driving marsh beasts toward the settlement, while the council insists the trouble is merely bad weather.
Role in the story
