At the table

Voice

A low, dry voice with a faint rasp from stone dust and long hours in enclosed workshops. His words land with deliberate, measured stops; when he is shaken, his breathing briefly catches before he gathers himself and speaks plainly.

He speaks in a low, dry, work-worn voice, with consonants clipped clean as if trimming a stone edge. His breath is normally steady and faintly roughened by years in dusty shops. When rattled, he catches a short rasp in his throat, stops, and counts four deliberate breaths before continuing. He does not raise his voice to sound convincing.

Speech patterns

States responsibility in short, plain sentences rather than softening it with excuses.
Uses practical craft terms when stressed: bed, seam, grain, cut, load.
Pauses before naming the dead or missing, then says the name clearly.
When shown the ring, asks who carried it and where they found it before asking what they believe it means.

How to play them

Ask what the characters know about altered markers and listen for specific evidence. Eskil responds best to direct questions and practical tasks, not absolution. If shown Oskeld Marn's notched iron ring, he freezes, recognizes it as his brother's, and asks where it came from. He will share his rubbings and testify to his own work, but will not claim to know what his brother intended.

Goal

Trace who commissioned the diverted route markers, identify what happened to his brother, and help restore safe passage without concealing his own part in the harm.

Motivation

He wants the work to be understood accurately, including his own complicity, and hopes that a truthful account may keep another crew from being sent into danger.

Secret ยท GM only

Appearance

Eskil's beard is clipped to a blunt, practical line, but the rest of his grooming is nearly fastidious: his hair is combed flat beneath a close-fitting cap, and he scrubs his nails with a sliver of pumice until the skin around them reddens. Fine granite dust still gathers in the creases of his knuckles and the seams of his cuffs. He moves with a mason's measured economy, turning his whole body to inspect a surface rather than craning his neck. Within a minute, people notice his unexpected habit of carrying a tiny, brightly painted wooden fish on his belt, its cheerful blue scales absurd against his grey work clothes.

Clothing

A patched leather work coat over thick grey wool, fur-lined boots, a leather apron scored with shallow chisel marks, and a close-fitting cap that keeps stone grit from his hair. His tools are wrapped in oiled cloth.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders squared as if bracing a stone lintel. His eyes track seams and corners before settling on a speaker. When a subject touches his culpability, he presses his thumb into the ridged edge of his chisel handle and holds still.

Distinguishing features

Fine grey stone dust seems to persist in the creases of his hands despite careful scrubbing.
His beard is cut to an unusually crisp, square edge.
A tiny blue wooden fish, painted by a child, hangs from his tool belt.
He turns to inspect a wall with his whole body, as if every surface deserves a proper introduction.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Eskil is painfully honest about facts that incriminate him, yet guarded about the private grief underneath them. He can be patient to the point of tenderness while teaching a craft, but grows sharp when someone treats a route marker as decoration. In ordinary company he is reserved and dryly funny; when confronted with evidence of his brother's involvement, his composure gives way to startled, almost boyish disbelief.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Quirks

Taps a tool twice against his palm before setting it down, even when the tool is not being used.
Turns drinking cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Names unfamiliar stones by texture before learning their trade name.
Keeps the tiny wooden fish meticulously clean while allowing dust to settle on everything else.

Habits

Inspects thresholds, pier blocks, and carved signs as naturally as other people look at faces.
When pressed for an answer, gives the most literal version first, then adds the painful context if he trusts the listener.
In a workshop, he becomes brisk and exacting; around grieving families, he makes room for silence and does not try to repair it with reassurance.
When frightened, his breath catches on a faint rasp, then he deliberately counts four slow exhalations before moving.

Traits ยท 3

Owns the harm of his work without asking others to lessen his burden.
Offers practical help more readily than emotional comfort, though he notices who has been left out.
Values precision, but knows that exact measurements cannot answer every moral question.

Flaws ยท 3

He treats a failure of professional care as proof that he deserves no comfort.
He is slow to trust orders, even when delay could put others at risk.
His insistence on exact evidence can make him seem cold to people who need immediate empathy.

Fears ยท 3

That his brother helped redirect the markers and will be treated only as a culprit, not a person.
That another crew will die because Eskil withheld a detail out of shame.
That every explanation he gives will sound like an attempt to escape blame.

Wants and needs ยท 4

To know whether his brother is alive and what part he played in the diverted markers.
To put his evidence in the hands of people who will act on it.
To be held accountable without being reduced to a scapegoat.
To learn how to help the affected crews in ways more useful than an apology.

Combat

AC 13 ยท HP 38 ยท 25 ft.

Eskil avoids combat and tries to put stonework, a doorway, or a sturdy ally between himself and danger. If trapped, he uses Fracture the Footing to create an escape opening, then retreats while calling out hazards and routes. He will not attack a confused or fleeing opponent unless doing so is the only way to protect someone from immediate harm.

Dwarven Resilience. Eskil has advantage on saving throws against poison.
Stone-Eye for Detail (custom). Eskil has advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Intelligence (History) checks to identify masonry, stonework, carved route markers, or signs of tampering. His proficiency bonus is doubled for checks with mason's tools.
Own Work, Own Fault (custom). After examining a carved marker for 1 minute, Eskil can recognize it as his own work unless it has been substantially altered.

Actions

Mason's Chisel. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage. Eskil uses this only to escape immediate danger.
Fracture the Footing (Recharge 5โ€“6). Eskil strikes worked stone or thick ice at a point he can reach. Each creature standing on that surface within 10 feet must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone. A creature that succeeds feels the ground buck and can move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Read the Stone. Eskil makes a Intelligence (Investigation) check to examine a visible worked-stone object, route marker, or masonry surface. On a success, he identifies its construction method and any obvious alteration, and can determine whether it bears his own work.

Reactions

Stone Shield (custom). When an attack targets Eskil while he is adjacent to a stone wall, pillar, or rocky outcrop, he gains a bonus to AC against that attack as he steps behind cover or angles his mallet to deflect the blow. He must be able to move.

Services they sell

Examines carved markers and identifies signs of recutting or deliberate alteration.
Creates accurate charcoal rubbings and measurements of worked stone.
Can advise on safe approaches to damaged masonry, ice-cut routes, and unstable stonework.

Rewards they can give

Eskil can provide accurate rubbings and measurements of the altered route markers.
His testimony can establish that the cuts match his craft and identify the measurements he was given.
If treated with patience, he can teach characters how to inspect a marker for recutting, granting advantage on one relevant Intelligence (Investigation) check.

Equipment

  • Heavy Mason's Chisel (tool, improvised weapon)A stout, short-handled chisel with a blunted striking end and a grip polished by years of use.
  • Mason's Mallet (tool)A worn leather mallet used for controlled taps and occasional emergency defense.
  • Marker Rubbings (evidence)A weatherproof booklet of charcoal rubbings, measurements, and route-marker sketches, including the altered cuts he made.
  • Painted Fish (keepsake)A small wooden fish with lopsided blue paint, given to him by a child from a rescue crew.

Possessions

A set of mason's chisels and a leather mallet
A charcoal sketchbook of route markers and their measurements
A pouch of granite dust used to reveal shallow cuts
A folded, unsent letter to his brother
The small painted wooden fish on his belt

Background

Eskil learned marker-smithing from his mother in the stone-cut shops above the Abyssal Trench, where a notch in a channel marker could mean the difference between a safe return and a crew lost under pressure. He was proud of making signs legible in bad light and bad weather, and took contracts from anyone who paid for honest work. A customer with proper seals hired him to recut several route markers, giving him exact measurements and an urgent deadline. Eskil cut the stone where he was told, never asking why the new notches pointed away from established lanes. When crews began vanishing and the routes went wrong, he recognized the style and understood what he had enabled. He has since kept a rubbing of every marker he altered and sought the people who ordered the work. The ring carried by Trench-Warden Oskeld Marn is the one Eskil remembers on his estranged brother, last seen leaving for the lower trenches.

Role in the story

A human-scale hinge between the altered route markers and the people harmed by them. Eskil's craft gives the party a way to connect deliberate tampering to its physical evidence, while his family tie to Oskeld Marn turns an investigation into a personal reckoning.

From their background
Faction
No formal faction allegiance. He has accepted work from local marker crews and now cooperates cautiously with Sheshe while investigating the diverted routes.

Known connections

His estranged brother is the person Eskil recognizes from Oskeld Marn's notched iron ring; Eskil does not know whether his brother is alive or what part he played in the diverted markers.
Sheshe, a siphon engineer and master craftsperson, has inspected the marker rubbings and agreed to compare their cut patterns with siphon-work records.
The crews who relied on the altered lanes are not an abstraction to him. He keeps a list of known missing names and adds new ones only when evidence warrants it.
