Grigor Varga
Grigor Varga
At the table
Voice
A worksite voice, projected from the chest with clipped consonants and a dry, plain finish. He sounds practiced at reading terms aloud to people who would rather be elsewhere. When angry, his words come faster and more directly, as though he is cutting away unnecessary clauses.
His voice comes from a broad chest and carries the dry, measured projection of someone used to giving instructions across a worksite. His consonants are clipped, his vowels plain, and he gives each sentence a firm ending, as if setting down a tool. Years of reading contracts aloud have made his phrasing exact. When angry, he speaks faster and more bluntly, with none of his usual qualifying clauses.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Grigor offers practical help first, but makes the boundaries and price clear. He listens without interrupting, asks for facts in sequence, and gives people a chance to correct their account. He is more generous with frightened people than with bullies. If pressed about the flood, he becomes factual and formal, then changes the subject.
Goal
Find out what the voice beneath the old road wants before it can use his pact to claim someone else's name.
Motivation
He wants to make agreements that protect people without letting rules become shelters for cowardice. Beneath that principle is a private hope that enough useful acts might make his past bearable.
Appearance
Grigor looks like a man built for standing watch through bad weather: square shoulders, a compact frame, and a stillness that makes his smallest movements seem deliberate. He smells unmistakably of clove oil and damp wool, a scent he knows about and insists is preferable to the smell of fear. His dark hair is combed flat and parted with exactness, though a few wiry strands escape over his ears. His skin is weather-browned, with fine pale lines around his eyes from years of squinting at distant roads. His hands are broad and ink-marked, nails kept short. He moves with economical, measured steps, turning his whole body toward whoever speaks rather than merely glancing over. The impression he leaves is of a door that has already decided whether to open.
Clothing
A high-collared brown wool coat reinforced at the elbows, a charcoal vest, sturdy trousers, and polished but scuffed boots. A brass clasp shaped like a tiny speaking tube fastens his collar. His cuffs are clean, but faint ink smudges persist at the base of both thumbs.
Body language
He stands with his feet planted shoulder-width apart and his hands visible, as if every conversation might need to become testimony. When listening, he presses his thumb against the seam of his left glove. He rarely points; instead, he lays a flat hand toward the object or person he means.

Personality
12 traits and drivesGrigor is strict about procedure because he has seen what happens when people improvise around danger, yet he will break a rule without hesitation if following it would repeat an old harm. In public disputes he is patient and almost ceremonially fair; when someone threatens a vulnerable person, his patience snaps into direct, unsentimental action. He dislikes theatrical emotion but is privately sentimental about small acts of repair.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 24 · 30 ft.Grigor starts at range with Eldritch Blast and uses his custom pact feature to disrupt a dangerous attack or exploit a foe's hesitation. He uses Hex against a durable target and Armor of Agathys if he expects to be cornered. He prefers cover, warns enemies before escalating, and withdraws rather than fighting to the death. He does not use lethal force against someone who has plainly surrendered.

Background
Before his pact, Grigor was a road warden who inspected bridges, weighed cargo, and settled disputes over tolls. He believed a fair rule applied equally to everyone, until a spring flood trapped a coach beneath a collapsed span. His captain ordered him to save the toll chest first, citing the law that protected public funds. Grigor obeyed, and a child drowned while he dragged the chest to dry ground. That failure changed his understanding of rules: they were tools for preventing harm, not excuses for refusing responsibility. Years later, while surveying a sealed culvert beneath the old road, he found a brass speaking tube that carried a voice from somewhere impossibly far below. The voice offered him the power to hear promises as pressure in the air. He accepted, bound by a precise agreement he still refuses to explain. Now he serves as a contract witness and mediator in the market town of Sootmarket, trying to keep quarrels from becoming blood feuds. He sends money to the drowned child's surviving sister, Shiori, who believes he was blameless. His former captain, Nadir, has returned to town with a warrant accusing Grigor of stealing the toll chest. Grigor is also trying to discover why the voice in the culvert has begun asking him to bring it a name.
Role in the story
A principled but compromised mediator who can serve as an ally, a difficult witness, or a quest-giver. His pact and the buried culvert connect local disputes to a deeper supernatural threat.
