Yette Kauffman
Yette Kauffman
At the table
Voice
A clear, youthful voice shaped by German at home and by the English she hears from her father. Before a difficult question, she takes a small breath through her nose and briefly tests the first word in her mouth. When upset, she speaks faster and clips the ends of her English questions.
Her English carries German sentence rhythms and crisp consonants. She is quickly picking up her father's English accent from remembered phrases, but it comes and goes, especially when she is tired or upset. Her voice is a child's, clear and direct, with a small preparatory pause before questions.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Answer plainly and at her level. If details cannot be shared, say so and give a truthful limit rather than a false promise. She responds best to specific information and being allowed to help in a small, safe way.
Goal
Find out when her father will be home and persuade him to let her accompany him when he goes to work.
Motivation
To make sense of her father's absence and remain useful to her mother and sister while he is away.
Appearance
A small, watchful child with light blond hair that refuses to stay neatly parted and light brown eyes that track adults' hands and faces. Her old-fashioned German dress has a sturdy, repeatedly mended hem and a high collar that rubs her chin. She walks with quick, purposeful steps, then stops dead when she hears a word she does not understand. Unexpectedly, she carries a folded sheet of paper covered in careful drawings of ordinary household objects, each labeled in English and German.
Clothing
Anja's older German-style dress, made from serviceable cloth, with a high neck, long sleeves, and a hem repaired by hand. Yette keeps it brushed and tries not to outgrow it too quickly.
Body language
She looks first at doorways and the hands of whoever is speaking, then up at their face. When waiting for an answer, she presses her lips together and holds still; when she has decided to persist, she squares her shoulders and plants both feet.

Background
Yette is the eldest daughter of Anja and John Kauffman. Her mother, known among the fae as Fantasia Von Braken, is a Sluagh of the Autumn Court; her father, Bruke Von Braken, is a Redcap of that court. They wed before Yette was born. In 2026, John is away with the U.S. Army, and Yette has not accepted that work can keep a parent beyond her reach. She asks why he has gone and whether she may accompany him when he leaves for work. Her mother has sewn her an older German-style dress, practical enough for daily wear and precious enough that Yette watches it for snags. Yette is learning her father's English accent from the phrases she remembers and practices them with her younger sister, Veilchan. A formative change came when an adult told her that her father's absence was temporary without being able to say when he would return. Since then, she has started asking for dates, routes, and plain explanations rather than accepting comfort alone. Her present trouble is ordinary and serious: she misses her father, worries that adults conceal things from her, and wants a promise no one can honestly make.
