Old Tallow
Old Tallow
At the table
“the old knot”
Voice
A dry, papery rasp with a faint grit to it, as if every sentence has passed through charcoal dust. Years of calling warnings through wind and branches left him with a carrying voice, but he now speaks at close range unless he needs to be heard over the forest.
He speaks in short, work-worn sentences shaped by years of calling across wind and brush. His comparisons come from kilns, tools, roots, and weather. He avoids naming grief directly, often substituting a task or a practical warning.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a small act of hospitality, such as offering warm root broth, then ask what the visitors have seen in the Sickwood. Share useful warnings freely but conceal the route to the Heartroot chamber. If the party demonstrates care for the forest rather than a desire to claim its power, admit that the seals are weakening and ask for help gathering materials. He will still resist any plan to open the chamber without preparation.
Goal
Keep the Heartroot sealed until the corruption can be contained, then find a way to tell Sero the truth without sending him into the chamber.
Motivation
He believes keeping the Heartroot sealed is the only way to prevent the Sickwood's corruption from reaching the settlements. Beneath that conviction is grief, and the wish to spare Sero the loss he once suffered.
Appearance
A wiry, weather-folded man with skin like damp bark and a coat of gray-brown beard caught with seed husks. His shoulders pitch forward as if he is always ducking beneath low branches. He walks with a quick, sideways hitch, favoring his left side, and checks the brass cap on his staff every few steps with his thumb. The cap contains a tiny clapper that never rings. His unexpected detail: tucked among the practical tools on his belt is a child's painted wooden whale, its blue paint rubbed almost away.
Clothing
A patched, knee-length coat of oiled wool, a hood stiffened with wax, trousers bound at the calves, and boots wrapped in strips of barkcloth. His belt carries pruning shears, a wedge, wax plugs, a tin of bitter salve, and the small painted whale.
Body language
He keeps his weight tipped toward his left foot and stands at a slight angle rather than facing people squarely. His thumb repeatedly rubs the brass cap on his staff. When he lies, he looks at the ground between a person's boots, as though checking whether roots have surfaced.

Personality
14 traits and drivesOld Tallow is patient with frightened people and impatient with confident ones. He can be warm and wry over a meal, but turns evasive when anyone asks about the Heartroot. Combat
AC 11 · HP 9 · 25 ft.Old Tallow avoids a fair fight. He uses Briar Snare to slow pursuers, retreats toward familiar ground, and tries to put trees, gullies, or a locked gate between himself and danger. If cornered, he uses Stinging Pollen to escape rather than to finish a fight. He will not willingly lead attackers to the Heartroot chamber.

Background
Before anyone called him Old Tallow, he was Tavi, a charcoal burner and seasonal woodcutter who knew the Sickwood as a place of hard work, not prophecy. He married Irua, a healer who gathered roots from the forest edge, and helped raise her son, Sero. When the Heartroot first sickened, a village council ordered the old growth cut open, hoping to burn out whatever had taken hold. Tavi was among the workers sent to make the first cuts. The moment his axe bit the root, the forest exhaled a cloud of black spores. Irua died days later, and Sero survived only because Tavi sealed him in a charcoal kiln until the air cleared. That experience changed Tavi: he abandoned the axe, took up the work of caretaker, and learned the Heartroot's old seals from the notes of its vanished keeper. Years later, he helped seal the root chamber with living grafts and wax plugs. Now the grafts are failing, and the corruption is spreading along the underground water. Sero, now a traveling physician, wants to open the chamber and find a cure. Tavi refuses to let him try. He has been misleading visitors, redirecting them from the root chamber and claiming the seals are stable, because he believes an uncontrolled opening would poison the whole valley.
Role in the story
A suspicious guide and keeper of the Sickwood's boundary. Old Tallow can help the party survive the forest, but his deliberate misdirection may make him an obstacle to anyone trying to reach the Heartroot. His loyalties are not to a villain's plan; he is trying to prevent a catastrophe while hiding his own responsibility for the danger.
“He married Irua, a healer who gathered roots from the forest edge, and helped raise her son, Sero.”
- Faction
- The Sickwood's informal caretaker, with no allegiance to the village council. He preserves the old Heartroot seals even when doing so puts him at odds with those seeking a cure.
