Catrin Shesh
Catrin Shesh
At the table
“Put that on the map”
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a slight rasp from cold air, dust, and long hours dictating outdoors. She places stress on the important measurement or name in a sentence, and her quick corrections can sound like a pen scratching across paper.
Her words have the clipped precision of someone accustomed to dictating notes over wind and wagon noise. She favors concrete nouns and exact directions, then uses dry, pointed questions when she distrusts an answer. When afraid for the crew, her sentences get faster and more imperative, not softer.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Catrin responds best to specific questions, honest uncertainty, and people who distinguish what they saw from what they assume. She will share useful map details with respectful visitors, but challenges anyone who treats the crew as expendable. Earn her trust by protecting the crew and preserving field evidence.
Goal
Publish an accurate, annotated map of Far Landing before the expedition's patrons can suppress inconvenient routes or claim the work as private property.
Motivation
She wants maps to be shared as tools for survival and understanding, not hoarded as leverage. Underneath her public insistence on publication is a private promise to make sure no one else dies because a warning was edited out.
Appearance
Catrin has a long, angular face made more expressive by a sharply lifted brow and a mouth that seems ready to correct someone. She smells unmistakably of damp paper, lampblack, and the bitter fennel lozenges she chews to stay alert, and she knows it; she keeps a tin of lozenges open on her desk for anyone who complains. She waits with her weight on the balls of her feet, as if the ground might offer a new fact at any moment. Her movements are economical and quick, except when she traces a route in the air with one ink-marked finger.
Clothing
A weatherproof, smoke-brown field coat with deep inside pockets, a high-necked linen shirt, close-fitting trousers, and boots resoled with mismatched leather. A green scarf is tied around her wrist for marking stakes; her cuffs are permanently stippled with ink.
Body language
She leans toward maps and away from raised voices, plants her feet as though testing the ground, and taps her thumb against the side of her index finger while checking a detail. When worried, she squares loose sheets into a perfect stack.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesCatrin is methodical enough to label the uncertainty in a report and sharp-tongued enough to make its author regret hiding it. She is courageous when a discovery or a crew member is at stake, but her courage is not fearlessness: anxiety makes her more controlling and more exact. In calm company she can be wry and unexpectedly generous with her time; under pressure she becomes brisk, argumentative, and fiercely attentive to who has been left behind.

Background
Catrin joined the Far Landing Survey as a junior copyist, believing accurate maps could keep people alive as well as make the expedition famous. During her first season, a guide named Oru warned that a marked ravine had shifted after a flood. The expedition leader dismissed the warning, and a supply team was trapped when the route collapsed. Catrin helped organize a night rescue by comparing field notes and old water lines, but one teamster, Jori, died before help arrived. Since then, she has insisted that uncertain terrain be marked as uncertain, not cleaned up for a sponsor's comfort. She became senior recorder by patiently reconciling years of contradictory sketches, and now presses to publish the maps before wealthy investors can claim them as private property. Her chief opponent is expedition patron Vey, who argues that premature publication will endanger future crews. Her closest ally is the practical quartermaster Tavi, with whom she argues over every spare coil of cord. Catrin is also trying to keep the present crew together through bad weather, dwindling supplies, and the knowledge that another survey team may already be approaching the same dangerous country.
Role in the story
A knowledgeable expedition contact whose maps can guide the party, complicate a patron's plans, or reveal that the official route is dangerously wrong. She can become an ally, a demanding conscience, or the person who asks the party to verify a frightening discovery.
