At the table

Voice

A dry, slightly rasped voice shaped by years of projecting over crowds and breathing dust from old curtains. She can switch from brisk stage patter to an unadorned, practical instruction without changing volume.

Her voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from calling over market noise and dusty curtains. She clips consonants when rushing, gives puppets distinct rhythms, and lets the punchline land without explaining it. Her name, Fenna Gimble, has a brisk, hard-edged sound when she calls it across a crowd.

Speech patterns

Frames a hard truth as a scene: 'And then the fool discovered the door had been locked from the outside.'
Uses quick, pointed questions to find out what a listener is avoiding.
Gives people nicknames based on their most obvious habits, then drops them if asked seriously.

How to play them

Begin with a brief joke or a puppet greeting to judge the group's temper. Offer a small, useful service before asking for trust. If the party treats her as an equal rather than a novelty, she becomes candid about the reeve and her search for Daska.

Goal

Find Daska and learn whether she chose to disappear or was forced off the road.

Motivation

She wants to find Daska, but she also wants to prove that a traveling show can make people remember what powerful people would rather bury.

Appearance

Fenna is a grown woman with a small head set on a sturdy, compact frame, standing about three and a half feet tall. Her angular face has defined cheekbones, a long nose, small sharp eyes, and a crooked grin that suggests she has already spotted the person most likely to heckle. Faint creases gather at the corners of her eyes from years of squinting into daylight and stage lamps. She moves with a performer's economy: a quick pivot, a planted heel, then an abrupt stillness that makes people look where she wants. She smells unmistakably of lamp oil, damp wool, and the sweet, dusty powder she uses to paint puppet faces, and seems entirely unaware of it. A little wooden bee, worn smooth on one wing from constant thumb-rubbing, hangs from her belt.

Clothing

A patched orange tunic over dark trousers, soft travel boots, and a weather-faded yellow ribbon tied around her hair bun. Her cuffs are marked with puppet paint, and her fingertips are stained in several colors.

Body language

She stands with her weight forward as if ready to step into a scene. When listening, she turns one ear toward the speaker and keeps her hands busy with a puppet joint or the bee charm. Under pressure she becomes unusually still, then moves all at once.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Fenna is bold with a crowd but guarded one-to-one. She can make a stranger laugh in a breath, yet becomes evasive when asked about her own losses. She is generous with food and shelter when someone is in immediate danger, but impatient with people who refuse to help themselves. When amused she is quick and warm; when frightened she becomes brisk and bossy, turning every problem into a sequence of cues.

Alignment
Neutral

Quirks

Introduces every new town to her puppets before she introduces herself.
Taps a puppet's wooden nose twice before putting it away, as if checking that it is still listening.
Keeps a running tally of hecklers and gives the worst one a heroic part in the next show.
Pockets interesting buttons and sorts them by the sound they make when dropped on wood.

Habits

Counts exits and likely hecklers before unpacking the booth.
Tests a new audience with a harmless joke before deciding how sharp to make the show.
Repairs puppets immediately after a performance, even when exhausted.
If someone is frightened, gives them a job to do rather than offering comfort directly.

Traits · 3

Performs confidence in public, but privately replays every mistake until she can turn it into a joke.
Protects people from humiliation, yet delights in puncturing the vanity of anyone who thinks they are untouchable.
Can be tender toward frightened children and bluntly unsentimental toward adults who exploit them.

Flaws · 3

She treats serious conversations like performances and can make people feel mocked when she is actually afraid.
She takes reckless risks to keep someone else from being blamed.
She assumes authority figures will retaliate, even when a measured appeal might work.

Fears · 3

That Daska is dead and Fenna will learn it only after years of searching.
That Ivo will be hurt because he mistook her performances for a promise of safety.
That her jokes will become a way to avoid saying what she truly means.

Wants and needs · 3

A reliable lead on Daska's whereabouts.
A safe place to keep the original script.
Someone to tell Ivo plainly that following her is dangerous, since she cannot bring herself to send him away cruelly.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 3 · Near

Fenna avoids a fair fight. She throws a puppet head to distract an enemy, ducks behind her booth or a cart, and tries to escape with anyone who cannot defend themselves. If cornered, she uses the stage knife and shouts directions to make attackers look the wrong way.

Custom. Crowdwise. When Fenna has a moment to study a crowd, she can identify who is watching exits, who is carrying a concealed weapon, and who is trying too hard to look uninterested. This grants no automatic mechanical bonus.

Actions

Stage knife. Melee attack: to hit, damage. Fenna uses a narrow stage knife, but would rather cut a rope or curtain than a person.
Flying puppet head. Ranged attack: to hit, damage. A weighted wooden puppet head thrown across a short distance; improvised and easily replaced.

Reactions

Drop the curtain. Custom: If someone threatens a bystander during her performance, Fenna abruptly drops the curtain and uses the confusion to usher that person behind the booth or toward an exit. This is a narrative response, not a special rules reaction.

Services they sell

Performs a comic or dramatic puppet show for a modest meal, safe lodging, or a few coins.
Can entertain a crowd, draw attention away from a discreet conversation, or pass a simple message through a staged scene.
Knows market gossip and which local officials are sensitive about being made fun of.

Equipment

  • Stage knife (weapon)A narrow utility knife for trimming puppet strings and, in an emergency, defending herself; use the Stage knife action.
  • Puppet booth (equipment)A tall, collapsible booth with red curtains, a patched frame, and space behind the stage to hide small objects or a person.
  • Knight puppet (prop)A knight puppet whose shield bears a painted bee; one joint is loose and clicks when moved.
  • Bee charm (keepsake)A wooden charm rubbed smooth on one wing; it belonged to Daska.

Possessions

A collapsible puppet booth with faded red curtains
A case of hand-carved puppets and spare strings
A wooden bee charm inherited from Daska
A bundle of handwritten play scripts
A small tin of colored paint and a brush with a chewed handle

Background

Fenna learned puppetry from her aunt, Daska, who traveled market roads with a booth made from a patched wagon canopy. Fenna was barely grown when a militia captain ordered the troupe to stage a victory play after a village had been burned in a border raid. She performed the script, then watched the survivors recognize their dead in the painted puppets. That night she rewrote the ending so the captain's puppet was dragged off by geese. The crowd laughed; the captain did not. Daska took the blame and was jailed for a month, an experience that taught Fenna both the force of a joke and the cost of letting someone else pay for it. Now she travels alone, keeping the old booth and trying to find Daska, who vanished after her release. Fenna sends small sums to Daska's last known lodging-house and asks after her at every stop. Her current trouble is a local reeve who insists her shows mock his authority, while a young apprentice, Ivo, keeps trying to follow her despite her warnings that the road is not a stage.

Role in the story

A memorable roadside performer, source of local rumors, and possible guide into a dispute between a reeve and the people he taxes. Her search for Daska can become a personal thread for the party, while her forbidden script carries evidence of an old atrocity.

From their background
Faction
No formal faction. She is tolerated by village players and market folk who appreciate a lively show, though reeves and local officials sometimes regard her as trouble.

Known connections

Daska, her aunt and former teacher, is missing after a brief imprisonment; Fenna still searches for her.
Ivo, a stubborn young apprentice, is trying to join her travels despite Fenna's refusal to take responsibility for him.
Reeve Sorn has threatened to ban her performances after Fenna's newest play made his tax collectors look ridiculous.
