At the table

Voice

Her voice has a dry, slightly gravelly rasp, shaped by cold mornings spent calling warnings down a road. Words start after a small nasal intake of breath, then come out evenly and clearly, pitched to carry across a camp without shouting. Under strain, her consonants sharpen and her sentences shorten; anger makes her more direct, not gentler.

Mara speaks in compact, practical sentences, often giving a location before an instruction. Her vocabulary is full of road terms: grade, verge, rut, and sightline. When describing the strange road, she pauses to separate what she witnessed from what she suspects.

Speech patterns

Begins directions with landmarks and distances, then gives the warning at the end: "Past the split oak, keep left. If you hear wheels behind you, don't turn around."
Uses plain, work-worn language and avoids declaring anything supernatural until she has ruled out ordinary causes.
Asks practical questions in quick succession when worried: who is missing, what they carried, and which way they were facing.
Calls people by their job or place in the group until she knows them well.

How to play them

Mara gives trustworthy route advice and clear warnings, but tests whether newcomers listen before sharing everything she knows. She responds well to practical help, honest uncertainty, and plans that protect civilians. She grows defensive if treated as a coward or if someone dismisses the missing travelers as already dead.

Goal

Find a safe explanation for the Passby Grove danger, locate the missing travelers, and keep the road open without sending anyone into a place that has begun to behave impossibly.

Motivation

Mara needs to believe that careful observation and shared responsibility can keep people safe, even when the route itself no longer obeys familiar rules.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Mara looks built for weather rather than ceremony: a long, square-shouldered figure with a wind-reddened face, rain-rough skin, and a gait that keeps her weight ready to shift on loose ground. Her dark hair is braided close to the scalp, with a few silver strands escaping at the temples. She studies a room by looking first at its exits, then at the floor, as if expecting the ground to contradict the people standing on it. Before speaking, she takes a measured breath through her nose and briefly presses her tongue to one chipped front tooth. Unexpectedly for a road warden, she keeps a tiny sprig of pale roadside flowers tucked into her map case and replaces it whenever it wilts.

Clothing

A patched slate-green road coat with a high collar, layered wool beneath it, mud-dark trousers, and knee-high boots repaired with careful cross-stitching. Her belt carries a whistle, a compact lantern, and a folded strip of faded route cloth.

Body language

Plants her feet as if bracing against a moving wagon, keeps one shoulder angled toward the nearest exit, and points with two fingers rather than one. Her gaze drops to thresholds, boot soles, and loose stones before it reaches faces. When uncertain, she rubs the seam of her map case with her thumb.

Distinguishing features

Before answering, takes a measured nasal breath and presses her tongue briefly to a chipped front tooth.
Her eyes go to exits, thresholds, and the ground before settling on a speaker.
Keeps a fresh sprig of roadside flowers inside her map case, an unexpectedly tender habit for a guarded warden.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Mara is protective but not soft-hearted in the easy sense: she will share her last dry blanket, then scold its recipient for standing in the rain. She distrusts grand claims and prefers measurements, yet privately collects signs that the road is doing something impossible. Among frightened travelers she is brisk and reassuring; alone at the map she becomes meticulous and almost superstitious. She wants company at the campfire, but often positions herself just beyond its brightest light.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Counts three steps past every threshold before turning around.
Taps a map twice against her knee before folding it, even when the map is already flat.
Leaves a pinch of oats on the ground at forks in the road, claiming it is for the horses.
Replaces the sprig in her map case as soon as it wilts, though she never explains why.
When a conversation goes quiet, tilts her head as if listening for wheels on distant gravel.

Habits

Checks the ground around a campsite before choosing where to sit, even when everyone else is already settled.
Keeps watch in short, deliberate turns and wakes others before fatigue makes her unreliable.
When frightened, becomes more practical and starts assigning tasks rather than admitting what she feels.
If someone is lost or injured, her attention becomes absolute; afterward she may be sharp with anyone who took needless risks.

That the road will take someone because she dismissed a warning as ordinary weather.
That the vanished travelers are still alive somewhere on a route she cannot reach.
That Heth will risk his own safety to prove she is wrong.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs help finding the missing travelers before nightfall.
Wants the party to check the shifted mile markers without splitting up.
Needs Heth to leave the south-bend wayhouse until the route is understood.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Mara is a level 0, non-spellcasting road warden, not a trained adventurer. She uses cover, calls out hazards, and helps civilians withdraw. She will fight only to buy time for an escape, preferring the staff at close range and the crossbow from behind a sturdy object. She does not pursue fleeing enemies.

Roadwise. Mara has advantage on checks to identify ordinary travel hazards, read wagon tracks, or judge whether a route has recently been used.
Custom feature, Passby's Echo. Near a rift disturbance, Mara can tell whether a sound came from the road as it is now or from a place the road remembers. This gives no precise location and is not a spell.

Actions

Ashwood Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () bludgeoning damage.
Warden's Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage.
Clear the Road. Once per short rest, Mara gives one creature within 30 feet a sharp, clear direction. The creature may use its reaction to move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. This is a custom nonmagical maneuver.

Reactions

Warden's Intercept. When a creature Mara can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, she can impose disadvantage on that attack's damage roll by jamming her staff, shield, or own shoulder into the way. She must be conscious and cannot use this if doing so would place her behind total cover.

Background

Mara Venn grew up at a roadside stopping place where her mother patched harness and her father kept a weather board nailed to the gate. She learned the work by walking the route with old Sella, a retired warden who taught her to read hoofprints and to distrust a stretch of road that went quiet too suddenly. Years ago, during a sleet storm, Mara led a family wagon off the marked track to avoid a washed-out bridge. The detour saved the travelers, but the road seemed to fold behind them; for an hour she heard the wagon's wheels following from somewhere beneath the earth. Since then she has treated strange road signs as warnings, not superstition. Now she shelters with the party at camp, trying to keep travelers alive while discovering why the Passby Grove route has become unnaturally dangerous. Her younger brother, Heth, runs a small wayhouse near the south bend and is furious that she keeps sending traffic away from it. She has also been corresponding with Shess, a surveyor who insists the old mile markers have shifted. The latest trouble is immediate: two travelers vanished between dusk and a bend that should be visible from camp, and Mara's official route map shows no bend there at all.

Role in the story

Questgiver sheltering with the party at camp during "Prelude Session 3: Rift in the Passby Grove." Mara provides a human stake in the crisis, local route knowledge, and an urgent reason to investigate why the road has become unnaturally dangerous.

“Years ago, during a sleet storm, Mara led a family wagon off the marked track to avoid a washed-out bridge.”
