Kelina Bartell
Kelina Bartell
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a slight rasp from metal filings and years of talking over workshop noise. She places consonants sharply, as if setting tiny parts into slots, and lets a sentence run faster when she is excited.
Her speech is brisk and concrete, full of workshop comparisons and small corrections. She often starts a sentence confidently, pauses to reconsider one word, then replaces it with a more exact one. When talking about her birds, her descriptions become unexpectedly affectionate.

How to play them
Start warmly with practical hospitality and interest in a visitor's craft or travels. If the party asks about the commission, admit that some instructions trouble her and offer to show them the diagrams if they agree not to damage the unfinished birds. She can hire them to inspect a delivery route, verify a magical component, or discreetly question Sivren's courier. Do not reveal the collector's hidden purpose as something Kelina already knows; let investigation earn the discovery.
Goal
Understand what the seven-bird commission is truly designed to do, protect her family, and preserve the freedom to make art without becoming an instrument of coercion.
Motivation
Make work that is beautiful for its own sake, give her family a safer and less precarious life, and remain someone who chooses what her craft serves.
Appearance
Kelina looks like a craftswoman who has spent years leaning over hot fittings and delicate gears: her forearms are freckled with tiny metal-darkened pores, and a fine sheen of oil catches in the creases of her knuckles. She moves with a quick, economical tilt of the head, as if listening for a gear to catch. A small mechanical bird is always pinned at her collar; its brass tail has been rubbed nearly smooth where her thumb worries it. Unexpectedly, she keeps a collection of pressed roadside flowers tucked between the pages of her measurement book, each labeled with the date and weather.
Clothing
A practical russet work coat with a leather apron, brass fasteners, and deep pockets full of tweezers, chalk, and folded sketches. A clean linen collar protects her neck from filings; her cuffs are usually rolled unevenly.
Body language
She leans toward whoever is speaking, then glances at their hands as if assessing what they know how to make. When uneasy, she turns the collar bird until its tail clicks under her thumb. When pleased, she plants both palms on the bench and rocks once on her heels.

Background
A House Cannith artisan, Kelina settled with her unnamed husband in a family workshop at Owl's Perch, the eastern Eldeen Reaches waystation formerly known as Keldon's Crossing. She spent years on practical commissions until an elemental mishap in the workshop put their young daughter in danger. The exact injuries and outcome are deliberately unresolved; what changed was the household's rhythm. Her husband took on more daily childcare and ordinary workshop maintenance, and Kelina began making intricate birds for the joy of making them. Their workshop now smells of oil, river damp, and the herbs her husband hangs to dry. Recently, wealthy western Aundairian collector Sivren Shrelach offered generous payment and artistic independence for exactly seven unique mechanical birds. His intricate instructions and confidential delivery arrangements seemed eccentric but profitable. Kelina has noticed altered diagrams and overlapping directional enchantments that do not fit a simple decorative commission. She has not learned that Sivren intends the birds as a covert divination and surveillance flock to find his own daughter, who voluntarily left him to be with druids of the Eldeen Reaches, and bring her back against her will. The missing daughter's name, age, location, druid group, and current circumstances remain unknown. Kelina's own child is a different person. Useful clues might include a redrawn directional rune beneath a wing plate, sealed delivery instructions that route the birds through separate couriers, or a request for the flock to retain impressions of places and faces. These clues can surface through inspection, conversation, or a successful examination of her work; none dictates what the adventurers must do. She can halt, rework, or complete the commission, and the party can help her investigate, warn the missing daughter if they find her, confront Sivren, or pursue another course. The historical divination school associated with Countess Eudokia is background only, with no established connection to the commission.
Role in the story
A sympathetic artisan at the center of a morally troubling commission. Kelina can become an ally, employer, source of clues, or conflicted obstacle depending on what the party discovers and chooses. She is not the mother of Sivren's missing daughter; her own daughter is a separate child.
