Duke Corwin
Duke Corwin
At the table
“as things stand”
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a slight gravelly catch, like someone accustomed to projecting over wind on a wall-walk. He clips the ends of urgent instructions but lets pauses sit when asking a frightened person to speak.
He speaks in clipped, well-enunciated phrases shaped by years of giving orders over wind and clanging gates. His words carry the dry rasp of cold air and old stone dust. When relaxed, his humor is plain and gently self-mocking; under pressure, he speaks more quickly and names people and tasks with exactness.

How to play them
Treat the party as capable partners and grant them emergency authority over the garrison. Explain the stakes plainly, including the vault concern, but do not let fear of the vault distract from defending the walls. If the party earns his trust, he shares the keep plan and admits where his own judgment may be compromised.
Goal
Keep Ravenbrook's people alive through the siege while preserving enough of the keep's defenses to prevent the attackers from overrunning the lower hall.
Motivation
Corwin believes authority is a debt owed to the people who must live with its consequences. He wants to prove that a ruler can defend a stronghold without treating its defenders as expendable.
Appearance
Duke Corwin is a broad-shouldered, weathered man whose dark green coat is polished at the elbows from years of leaning over maps. He moves with an unmistakable hitch in his left step, not from injury but from an old habit of matching his pace to marching files. In any room, his eyes go first to exits, then to whoever has the least protection. His unexpectedly incongruous detail: he keeps a tiny wind-up wooden bird tucked in his breast pocket and winds it before difficult decisions.
Clothing
A dark green wool coat over a quilted gambeson, practical riding trousers, weatherproof boots, and a plain iron signet ring. His ducal sash is folded into a pocket rather than displayed.
Body language
He stands with his hands clasped behind his back and his weight slightly favoring his right leg. His gaze checks doors and windows before settling on a speaker. When troubled, he winds the wooden bird once, then places it carefully on the nearest flat surface.

Possessions
Background
Corwin inherited Ravenbrook Keep young, after his father died during a winter fever and the household nearly fractured over the succession. He learned governance by walking the kitchens, stables, and watch posts rather than remaining in the great hall. Years ago, during a grain riot, he ordered the granary opened despite his steward's warning that the reserve would be dangerously low. The decision saved lives but left the keep short of food through the following winter. Since then, he has learned to calculate the human cost of every reserve and every delay. His spouse, Edda, coordinates the evacuation shelters below the eastern wall; they argue often about whether he risks himself too readily, but neither doubts the other's judgment. His old quartermaster, Hobb, has warned that the sealed vault beneath the keep may be vulnerable if the siege lasts. Corwin is currently balancing dwindling supplies, a strained garrison, and the fear that the attackers know more about the keep than they should.
