Huma Qadri
Huma Qadri
At the table
Voice
A resonant, clear speaking voice with a faint rasp at the edges after a long night of performances. She projects from the chest and shapes consonants carefully so instructions carry through a busy room. When amused, a quick breathy snort breaks through her composure; when angry, her words become more forceful and her pace quickens.
Her words have the clear, grounded rhythm of someone used to giving cues over music and chatter. She clips instructions into useful phrases, then lets a teasing observation trail behind them. Her work has made her practiced at projecting without shouting, and years of family life have taught her to say a name once with unmistakable emphasis.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Huma is warm but observant. She offers visitors a small practical kindness, then listens for what they leave unsaid. Respect her workers and children and she will be candid, resourceful, and generous with local knowledge. Threaten her family or treat the dancers as props and her welcome ends immediately.
Goal
Keep the Tern open, help Pali choose a future freely, and find a way to assist Dema without bringing danger to her household.
Motivation
To make a safe, lively place where performers and families can earn a living without surrendering their choices.
Appearance
Huma has the balanced, enduring build of a lifelong dancer, with strong calves, a compact middle, and shoulders held as if she could begin a turn at any moment. Her movements are precise but never ornamental by accident: she pivots on the balls of her feet, lets a hip settle half a beat late, and can become startlingly still when listening. Her black hair is parted into ruler-straight sections and wound into a glossy coil secured with a plain bone pin, a grooming ritual so exact it seems almost ceremonial. Her unexpected detail is a tiny, painstakingly maintained collection of pressed weeds tucked in a book of dance notes; she knows the common names of every stubborn plant that grows between the paving stones. People remember the soft chime of her coin-trimmed hip scarf and the sensation that she has already noticed every exit.
Clothing
A practical layered outfit: fitted trousers, soft ankle boots, a wrap blouse, and a long overskirt she can knot above the knee for dancing. A coin-trimmed hip scarf gives her turns a bright, dry chime. Her jewelry is sturdy rather than precious, and she keeps a shawl nearby for whichever child forgot a coat.
Body language
She keeps her weight centered and her hands relaxed, with a dancer's habit of marking rhythms against her thumb. In a welcoming mood she leans in and meets a person's eyes; when weighing a risk she turns one shoulder toward the nearest exit. Anger makes her movements larger and more direct, not quieter: she plants both feet, squares her shoulders, and says exactly what must stop.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Huma avoids a fair fight. She uses movement and Defensive or Mobile Flourish to draw danger away from children and allies, attacks twice with her scimitar when she must, and uses control or escape spells to create an opening. She prefers to end a fight by separating opponents, blinding them, or persuading them to stand down rather than pursuing a fleeing foe.

Background
Huma was born above her aunt's crowded tea shop in the river town of Sefra, where she learned to dance in the gaps between stools and customers. At seventeen she joined a traveling troupe and discovered that a performance could distract a room while a frightened person slipped out the back. She later married Narek, a patient potter who disliked crowds but never asked her to give up the stage. They have ten children, ranging from a nearly grown eldest to two small twins, and the family has learned to run on shared chores, neighborly favors, and Huma's strict rehearsal calendar. Years ago, during a fire at the summer market, Huma abandoned a lucrative performance to lead a chain of children through a smoke-filled dye shop. One of them was not hers. The choice saved lives, but the troupe lost its contract and Huma learned that applause is a poor substitute for having a plan. Now she manages evening performances at the Tern, a low-ceilinged dance hall named for the birds that nest noisily in its chimney. She is trying to keep the hall solvent while a landlord raises the rent and her former troupe leader, Dema, returns asking her to help smuggle a witness out of town. Her eldest, Pali, wants to leave home and join the troupe; Huma is proud, terrified, and trying not to turn that fear into a command.
Role in the story
A lively local ally who can provide cover, contacts, and a refuge, while her family obligations and unresolved history with Dema create personal stakes beyond the party's immediate needs.
