El
El
At the table
Voice
El makes no ordinary vocal sounds. Her silence is part of her presence: the soft rasp of breathing through her muzzle, the click of claws on stone, and the worn brass bell give her a distinctive sound. When she is hurt, her voice catches in a short, rough yelp shaped by a life spent running beside wagons and through winter brush.
El is silent unless she is in pain. She communicates through nudges, eye contact, leaning her weight against someone, and the clink of her harness bell. If hurt, she gives a rough, breathy yelp or whine; the sound is strained and startlingly vulnerable, not a spoken word.

How to play them
Treat El as a capable companion, not a tool or a mouthpiece. She responds best to calm commands, food, and being allowed to approach at her own pace. She will offer comfort without requiring conversation, and will resist any plan that leaves a suffering creature unattended.
Goal
Find the missing cleric who raised her and discover whether they survived the bridge disaster, while continuing to care for those she meets.
Motivation
To ease suffering, keep her companions together, and follow the trail of the person who taught her that kindness could be a choice rather than an order.
Appearance
El is a sturdy, short-legged, long-bodied dog with a dense coat that feels like rough velvet over a soft undercoat. She moves with a purposeful, slightly rolling lope, favoring her left side when she turns sharply, then plants herself with a surprising stillness beside anyone who has fallen. Her paws are broad and dark, her muzzle is dusted with pale hairs, and her ears fold unevenly, one tip usually turned inside out. A brass bell on her harness has been rubbed smooth on one edge from years of nudging it against people to get their attention. Unexpectedly for a working healer, she carries a small, brightly patched child's mitten tied to her harness and treats it with solemn care.
Clothing
A fitted travel harness of russet leather, softened and darkened by rain, with stitched pockets for bandages and salves. A faded blue cloth is knotted around her neck, and the child's mitten is tied beside the bell.
Body language
Her tail makes small, careful sweeps when she is content, but goes still when she detects pain. She leans her shoulder against people who are grieving and braces her feet wide when helping someone stand. When uncertain, she tilts her head and taps the brass bell on her harness against the nearest knee.

Personality
14 traits and drivesEl is generous to the point of recklessness, but she is not passive: she plants herself between a bully and their victim, and can refuse a familiar command if it would abandon someone in pain. With frightened people she is patient and grounding; with cheerful companions she is playful, stealing a glove or leaning her weight into their legs. When tired, she turns practical and insistent, repeatedly nudging people toward shelter, water, and rest.

Background
El was born in a roadside kennel that served a string of small farms. Her first handler trained her to find lost lambs and stay close to frightened children. During a harsh winter, a fever swept through the district. El kept slipping away from the kennel to curl beside the sick, and one night she pressed her muzzle to a child's brow. A soft gold light passed from her into the child, leaving the fever broken and El exhausted. The child's family called it a blessing; El's handler called it a reason to keep her chained. She chewed through the tether and ran. A wandering cleric took her in, taught her simple commands, and helped her shape the gift into healing magic. Years later, the cleric vanished while tending refugees after a bridge collapse. El now travels with whoever will have her, following the faint scent of the missing cleric's medicine and helping the hurt she meets along the way. She still looks for the child she saved, whose family left a mitten behind at the kennel.
