Nim Vane
Species
Rock Gnome
Appearance
Nim Vane is a twitchy, sharp-eyed rock gnome whose narrow face seems permanently caught between suspicion and apology. His fingertips are stained with layers of black, blue, and copper ink, while his neatly combed ash-brown hair is held back by tiny brass clips engraved with filing numbers. He moves in abrupt, economical bursts, like a wind-up instrument that occasionally skips a beat. His double-locked leather satchel is always clutched against his chest, even while climbing or fighting. At first glance he appears fragile and fussy, but his stare has the hard, unblinking intensity of a courtroom witness who has already memorized every contradiction in the room. The unexpected contradiction is that his immaculate clerk's tunic is lined with soft yellow felt patches, each embroidered with tiny pictures of birds, a private comfort he refuses to explain.
“A rapid, precise tenor that often drops into a whisper around sensitive information. Nim speaks with careful qualifiers, technical metaphors, and sudden bursts of blunt honesty.”

Distinguishing Features
Permanent layered ink stains on every fingertip.
Brass hair clips engraved with numerical filing codes.
A double-locked satchel never more than a handspan from his body.
A thin scar across his left ear from an exploding evacuation beacon.
A habit of tilting his head as if listening to invisible machinery.
Voice
“A rapid, precise tenor that often drops into a whisper around sensitive information. Nim speaks with careful qualifiers, technical metaphors, and sudden bursts of blunt honesty. When furious, he becomes quieter and more articulate.”
Clothing
A meticulously tailored charcoal clerk's tunic with forest-green piping, hidden inner pockets filled with micro-scrolls, copper-thread gloves with the fingertips removed, reinforced trousers, soft-soled work boots, and a heavy double-locked leather satchel. Every button is numbered, and every pocket has a different fastening method.
Body Language
Nim keeps his shoulders hunched around his satchel and repeatedly presses his thumb against its second lock. His eyes dart toward sources of sound, while his hands perform tiny counting motions against his knuckles. When courage takes hold, his posture changes completely: he plants both feet, lifts his chin, and becomes unnervingly still.
