Appearance
Maela Venn looks like a woman carved from weathered oak and polished brass. Her face is broad, sun-browned, and crossed by a pale scar that runs from her left temple to the corner of her mouth, tugging her smile permanently toward one side. Her hands are square and callused, with fingertips stained green from years of handling copper, herbs, and oxidized coins. She moves with the compact, balanced steps of someone who expects the floor to collapse beneath her at any moment. Despite her formidable presence, she wears a delicate silver bell on one boot and apologizes to shelves when she bumps them. The overall impression is of a kindly aunt who could dismantle a bandit gang using only cookware.
“Her voice is low, smoky, and remarkably calm, with the clipped rhythm of a veteran giving clear instructions. She pronounces every price as if it were a legal judgment.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale scar pulls the left corner of her mouth upward.
Her left index finger is missing the top joint, lost while disarming a sword trap.
A silver bell is sewn into her right boot.
Her apron is embroidered with tiny maps of roads that no longer exist.
She smells faintly of cedar oil, hot metal, and cinnamon.
Voice
“A dry contralto with a warm rasp, like a whetstone dragged across brass”
Clothing
A dark green wool shirt beneath a reinforced leather apron, patched gray trousers, high-laced boots, and a sleeveless brigandine vest hidden under the apron. Her belt carries keys, chalk, a measuring cord, and three tiny brass thimbles. Every garment has been repaired so many times that the stitches form decorative patterns.
Body Language
Maela plants both feet before difficult conversations and rests one hand on the counter as though steadying a ship. She tilts her scarred side away from strangers but squares her shoulders toward anyone she considers vulnerable. When angry, she becomes almost perfectly still, with only the silver bell on her boot betraying her movement.
