Azruk Sablehand
Azruk Sablehand
At the table
Voice
A dry, chest-led voice with a little gravel from years of dust and shouted patrol calls. His breath stays measured while he is working; when rattled, it breaks into two short catches that make his next words sound abruptly more deliberate. He carries across a noisy street without sounding theatrical.
He speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences shaped by years of giving directions over wind and market noise. He tends to name the task before the person, then corrects himself when he catches it. His breath is normally steady; when shaken, a dry two-beat rasp catches between clauses. He does not raise his voice to command. He makes the instruction short enough to carry.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Azruk is wary but not needlessly hostile. He watches whether the party protects bystanders, shares risk, and asks what the theft is meant to protect. Give him specific evidence or a credible plan, not a moral lecture. If convinced that Azkhar's scheme endangers the very people Azruk is trying to protect, he may negotiate a change of course, but he will insist on a safe way to extract his crew.
Goal
Complete the theft without allowing the protected people or object to be used as leverage, then pay for Orua's treatment and return to Verulana with enough money to start over.
Motivation
Pay for his sister's treatment, keep his crew alive, and make sure his work does not turn him into the sort of guard he once disobeyed.
Appearance
Azruk has sun-browned skin with a fine salt-dust sheen that settles into the creases around his eyes. His black hair is clipped close at the sides and left uneven on top, as if cut with a knife in camp. He stands with his shoulders angled to leave a path behind him, yet takes up more room than he realizes, habitually placing himself between strangers and whoever is nearest the exit. His breath is normally steady and almost inaudible; under pressure it catches in a dry, unmistakable two-beat rasp. He moves economically, boots quiet on grit, and turns his whole torso rather than snapping his head. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny packet of pressed desert flowers tucked inside his armor, carefully protected from the sand.
Clothing
A faded sand-colored coat over a patched mail shirt, wrapped forearms, a blue-gray scarf used against grit, and a battered leather belt with the stitching renewed in several different threads.
Body language
He plants his feet as if bracing against a gust, angles his shoulders toward the nearest escape route, and often occupies the space between a stranger and a vulnerable person without noticing. When unsettled, his ribs hitch twice and his jaw works once before he answers. He avoids looming over seated people by crouching, though he rarely relaxes his hands.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesAzruk is disciplined about a plan but distrustful of the person who wrote it. With his crew he is blunt, practical, and quietly attentive; with frightened civilians he becomes patient and makes room for them to speak. When insulted he answers with clipped precision rather than bluster. When someone proves they understand the cost of a choice, he can be unexpectedly candid and willing to revise his position.

- Neutral, pragmatic and loyal to people rather than causes

Combat
AC 15 · HP 22 · 30 ft.Azruk fights to control space rather than rack up kills. He uses cover, blocks narrow approaches, and gives allies room to withdraw. He targets weapons or legs when capture is possible, but will strike hard if a companion is threatened. If outnumbered, he bargains for a pause and looks for a route that keeps civilians clear.

Background
Azruk grew up in Verulana, where his mother kept a shade stall and his younger sister, Orua, learned to read by sorting scraps of shipping labels. He joined the city guard for steady meals and found he was good at noticing who was frightened before they ran. During a market fire, a superior ordered him to keep a wealthy caravan's route clear rather than open a jammed side gate. Azruk disobeyed, broke the gate bar, and got trapped inside with several vendors. He survived, but the guard dismissed him for insubordination and the merchants he saved could not repay the debt. The event changed his idea of duty: he still believes in keeping people safe, but no longer trusts a uniform to decide who counts. Orua now needs costly treatment for a wasting lung illness, and Azruk has taken mercenary work to pay for it. He leads the theft in Session 7: Sands of Betrayal for a fee from Azkhar, but is committed to the job only so long as it protects what he believes he is safeguarding. He is listening for proof that the party understands the stakes. His former guard partner, Tavi, still sends occasional warnings from Verulana, while Orua insists she would rather risk her health than have him become someone else's weapon.
Role in the story
Antagonist and mercenary leader in Session 7: Sands of Betrayal. Azruk leads the theft, but his loyalty is conditional and rooted in protecting people, not serving Azkhar's ideology. He can remain an enemy, become a source of intelligence, or help the party redirect the job if they prove they understand what he is protecting.
“He joined the city guard for steady meals and found he was good at noticing who was frightened before they ran.”
- Faction
- Formerly the Verulana city guard; currently leads a small hired crew on Azkhar's theft contract, without allegiance to Azkhar's cause.
