Lord Callum Carver
Lord Callum Carver
At the table
“I may have this wrong”
Voice
His voice has a dry rasp from dust, cold air, and years of shouting over quarry work, with a brief catch when he has to perform courtly phrasing. He projects from his chest without making a show of it. Anger makes his consonants harder and his sentences shorter; it does not make him quieter.
His words carry the clipped practicality of a laborer used to being heard over carts, wind, and hammer blows. He gives directions in short, useful phrases and pauses before unfamiliar titles, as if checking whether they belong to a person or a job. When embarrassed, he clears his throat and changes the subject to provisions.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Speak plainly and give him practical choices rather than flattering his title. He listens most carefully to people who can explain who bears the cost of a decision. A concrete offer to help the garrison or protect residents earns trust faster than a grand promise. He is open to evidence that a political actor is acting in good faith, but will ask for verifiable terms.
Goal
Keep the garrison paid and prevent the proposed ceremonial avenue from displacing the working district before the city's winter stores are secured.
Motivation
To prove that a lord can be useful without becoming the sort of person who treats workers as figures on a page.
Appearance
Callum is broad through the shoulders and built like a man who spent years hauling wet timber before anyone put a sword in his hand. His brown curls refuse to lie flat beneath a helm, and his trimmed beard is clipped with the practical unevenness of someone who learned to shave by a washbasin mirror. He moves economically, weight balanced over his feet, but his left heel taps once before he commits to a step. He keeps checking the plain leather strap at his wrist, a nervous habit he does not notice. His square jaw shifts audibly when he chews, and when he laughs his upper teeth show in a blunt, slightly crowded line. Unexpectedly for a knight, he carries a tiny wooden whistle carved like a duck and uses it to call stray dogs, not troops.
Clothing
A serviceable dark-blue surcoat over fitted mail, patched at the hem and kept clean at the collar. His lord's signet sits on a cord beneath the shirt, not displayed. His boots are well-soled quarry leather, and his cloak has a repaired square where a costly clasp once tore free.
Body language
He stands with his feet set as if bracing a cart on a slope. In formal company, he keeps his hands clasped behind his back so they will not fidget; among soldiers, he relaxes and gestures with his whole forearm. Before answering a threat, his jaw works once and his thumb rubs the wrist strap.

Distinguishing features
Personality
15 traits and drivesCallum is humble in the way of someone who knows exactly how much work a clean room takes, but he has a stubborn pride in having earned his place by action. He is honest and direct with soldiers and laborers, yet awkwardly guarded around people who speak in polished layers. In a crisis he is decisive and generous with risk; after it, he can become self-reproachful and suspicious of praise. He wants to believe a person can be decent, but assumes every institution has learned to make decency expensive.

- Lawful good, with a growing distrust of laws written to protect the powerful

Combat
AC 19 · HP 140 · 30 feetCallum tries to keep enemies away from civilians and less experienced soldiers. He uses his three attacks to pressure one dangerous opponent, then shifts position with Impossible Footwork to deny a clean approach. He spends Awakened Edge uses when a forced reposition could break a formation or protect someone vulnerable. He reserves Indomitable for a save that would incapacitate him or endanger others, and uses Sovereign Cut against a decisive threat rather than to show off. He does not pursue a fleeing enemy if doing so would expose his line.

Background
Callum was born to a family of quarry laborers outside Rexxentruum and learned to judge a load by its groan before he could read a contract. He enlisted as a common soldier, where he became known less for grand charges than for dragging people out of places that were about to collapse. At the battle of Dawnshires Keep, the gatehouse caught fire during a retreat. Callum went back through the smoke three times, first for wounded soldiers, then for a standard-bearer he disliked, and finally for the keep's trapped quartermaster. The deed earned him a knighthood and, through a chain of deaths and disputed inheritances, the title of lord and command of a city post. He is the first Lord Callum Carver, with no family tradition to teach him what to do at a banquet. His sister, Hester, still manages the quarry accounts and writes him blunt letters about the rent on their mother's house. Captain Dagan Holt, a veteran from Dawnshires, is his closest military adviser and privately thinks Callum is too willing to take every burden himself. In Rexxentruum, court secretary Thessa Vey offers polished assistance that Callum suspects comes with invisible strings. His current problem is a city garrison short on wages, while wealthy petitioners demand that he clear a working district for a new ceremonial avenue.
Role in the story
A newly raised knight and lord whose practical instincts place him at odds with Rexxentruum's polished power brokers. He can be an ally, a political obstacle, or a test of whether the party will help him turn a title into protection for ordinary people.
