Otkel
Otkel
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a faint rasp from cold mountain air and the dust of old books. His consonants are crisp, and he gives names and quantities deliberate weight. He sounds welcoming when offering help, but his tone becomes plain and immovable when someone asks him to falsify a record.
He speaks with measured precision, shaped by years of reading damaged texts aloud and calling instructions across windy courtyards. He favors short clauses, dates, and concrete nouns. When he is excited, his pace speeds up and he stacks practical questions one after another.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Otkel offers practical help before asking for trust. He answers questions honestly, including uncomfortable ones, and invites characters to inspect relevant records. If they are in danger, he acts first and explains afterward. He is most receptive to people who show how information will help someone beyond themselves.
Goal
Rebuild the surrounding settlements' trust before the next heavy snowfall closes the mountain pass.
Motivation
He believes accurate knowledge is a form of care, and that people deserve the truth even when it costs those in authority.
Appearance
Otkel is a broad, steady tortle whose domed shell is mottled like old slate beneath a thin lace of pale mineral veins. He moves with a patient, heel-first tread, but his head turns in quick, precise increments, as if each glance were a page being indexed. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that his eyes keep tracking the room's exits, hinges, and high shelves rather than the faces speaking to him. His shell carries a small, unexpected decoration: a childish painted procession of ducks, carefully retouched every spring.
Clothing
A smoke-blue wool robe cut open at the back for his shell, a patched russet shoulder mantle, and a belt fitted with wax tablets, chalk, and a tiny brush. The hems are repaired in neat, contrasting stitches.
Body language
He stands squarely and holds his hands still when listening, but his gaze maps doors, windows, and high ledges. When asked to make a promise, he touches the lower edge of his shell as if checking that it is still there. In a crisis, his head lowers and his steps become brisk and direct.

Background
Otkel was born to a family of mountain path-keepers and learned early to read weather from stone, wind, and the sound of meltwater. He came to the remote monastery called Sairth as a young adult, when a winter avalanche buried the pass and destroyed the village's storehouse. The monks opened their grain vault, but their records could not establish which neighboring households had already received aid. Otkel watched frightened families argue over scraps of memory while food spoiled behind a locked door. He vowed that knowledge should help people live, not merely outlast them, and became the monastery's archivist. Years later, he discovered that an older abbot had quietly altered the records to hide how much aid had been diverted to the monastery's own wealthy patrons. Otkel exposed the fraud, but the resulting scandal left the monastery distrusted by nearby settlements. Now he is trying to rebuild those relationships while a new, severe winter threatens the pass. His former mentor, Heddan, remains at Sairth and believes the truth should have been softened until the danger passed.
Role in the story
A principled source of local knowledge and aid whose records can uncover the monastery's old wrongdoing. He can become a steadfast ally, a difficult witness, or the center of a choice between public truth and immediate survival.

- Faction
- Archivist and cleric of the remote Sairth monastery, which takes its name from a worn-down local corruption of an older word for a high pass.
