Al
Al
At the table
“in public and”
Voice
His voice has a dry, faintly gravelly texture, shaped by years of speaking over dock machinery and by the rasping breath of his dragonborn throat. He articulates carefully and places emphasis on names and numbers. When rattled, he draws a brief, rough breath before continuing, as if refusing to let his body finish the interruption.
Al speaks in compact, deliberate sentences, with the clipped precision of someone accustomed to negotiating over machinery and deadlines. He uses few idioms and rarely repeats himself. Under stress, his breath catches and rasps through the ridges of his throat, though the words themselves remain direct.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with useful courtesy and a practical offer. Al tests whether visitors keep their word by giving them a small, verifiable commitment. He is candid about immediate risks but conceals how much authority he holds until he understands what the party wants. If they threaten Laios, he becomes immovable; if they protect ordinary people, he may quietly offer help.
Goal
Keep Laios's crew intact while preventing its new client from bringing violence into the river district, then find a way to leave the organization without abandoning the people who depend on him.
Motivation
Al wants to prove that loyalty can be something other than obedience, but he still needs Laios to need him.
Appearance
Al is a dark gray dragonborn whose scales have the dry, finely pebbled texture of old slate, with pale mineral flecks catching at the jaw and knuckles. He keeps his horns polished to a low sheen and his whisker-like facial scales combed into narrow, exact ridges. His tail moves in small, measured corrections rather than broad sweeps, and he rarely turns his whole body when a glance will do. A tiny brass button, far too bright for his otherwise restrained dress, is sewn inside his left cuff; he touches it when making a difficult decision. He leaves the impression of a man who has arranged even his silences in advance.
Clothing
A charcoal wool three-piece suit cut to fit his tail, a dark waistcoat, a soft black shirt, and a narrow tie pinned with a plain clasp. He wears a long overcoat with deep inside pockets, close-fitting leather gloves when outdoors, and well-maintained boots with quiet soles. Nothing bears a gang emblem.
Body language
He stands with his weight balanced and his shoulders relaxed, as if a fight would be an inconvenience rather than a surprise. He aligns objects with the edge of a table while listening. When angry, his tail goes perfectly still and his jaw works once, hard; when genuinely frightened, his breath catches against the ridges of his throat.

Personality
11 traits and drivesAl is patient enough to let a silence do his work, yet impulsive when someone vulnerable is in immediate danger. In public he is polished and dryly amused; alone with Laios he becomes blunt, almost parental. He enjoys being underestimated but resents being treated as merely useful. When calm, he bargains with careful fairness. When ashamed, he overcompensates by taking on everyone else's burdens.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Al avoids a fair fight. He positions himself near cover, uses Cunning Action to slip between hiding places, and targets isolated enemies with Sneak Attack. He saves Uncanny Dodge for a dangerous hit and uses his lightning breath when foes crowd a narrow approach or when he needs to cover an ally's retreat. He withdraws once Laios or civilians are safe, unless doing so would expose his crew.

Background
Alierd, called Al by everyone who wants something from him, grew up with his cousin Laios in a cramped river district where family debts were settled before breakfast and remembered after dark. As a young courier, Al learned that people watched the obvious threat and ignored the person carrying the message. He became Laios's fixer: arranging safe passage, quiet settlements, and favors that never appeared in writing. Years ago, a warehouse fire trapped several workers behind a jammed loading gate. Laios ordered Al to save a shipment of contraband first. Al disobeyed, broke the gate, and got the workers out, losing the shipment and earning Laios's lasting resentment. Since then, Al has kept Laios in the public role of boss while privately steering the crew away from reckless choices. His old friend Sava, a dock medic who treated the fire survivors, knows the truth and insists Al eventually make amends to the workers. Now Laios has promised protection to a violent new client without consulting Al, and the client is demanding a shipment that will pass through the same district where the rescued workers live.
Role in the story
A courteous fixer who appears to be Laios's efficient right hand, but is secretly the person keeping the crew's conflicts from becoming a neighborhood war. He can become a cautious ally, a difficult intermediary, or the final obstacle between Laios and a disastrous decision.
